› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Wood Stove Pellet Recommendations!!!
Tomorrow, I will be going to my local Home Depot/Lowes, etc to invest in some Wood Stove Pellets.
I am trying to cut costs with Chacha until I can find another job. I think I will stay with WSP if she is alright with the switch. She tends to do a lot of pooping in 2-3 day periods and I can’t afford Carefresh anymore ![]()
Anyways, what brands are recommended? And what are the ones that are good and ones I should avoid purchasing?
Also, I do not know how the pellets work. I know the pellets look like rabbit food, but kind of a yellow-ish. What happens to the pellets after bunny does her business in them? Does it turn to bark or something? ![]()
This is what they look like.

when they get wet they turn into a wet sawdust type thing. But the sawdust doesn’t cause respiratory issues because it is wet and compacted. ( Someone else might want to try to explain that better
)
I can’t remember the name of the bad chemical that some wood stove pellets have so someone else will have to tell that.
I don’t know the name of the chemical, but it’l’ be labelled as having an acceleratant.
I can’t think of a better way to describe it Mocha! They disintergrate but stick together… like wet, compacted sawdust!
haha. yeah thats what I was thinking of, accelerantant.
My buns like Spruce Point pellets. About $5.40 per 40 lb bag. It lasts me about a month. It’s the brand/type my husband bought for the pellet stove the year before last. Then last year he switched to New England Wood Pellets (cheaper.) I don’t know what kind of wood exactly. I only know it was some sort of hardwood tree. Anyway, they hated it and it didn’t control odor as well as the spruce. So this year I made him switch back.
runawaybunny, were the hardwood ones reddish in colour? I noticed this too. The ones I have currently are reddish and breaks down almost mud-like and they are not as good as the yellowy, light wood ones.
I only use pellet litter in one box that sometimes is in the living room. I use a thin layer under a plastic grate. Other than that, I use newspaper and vinegar in the rabbit area to absorb odor. Needs change more regular but you can’t get cheaper! Yesterday I put in a big piile of shredded paper and lots of hay on top. Rabbits thought that was neat.
Brittany, with WSP you don’t need to put too much in the box as it swells up once wet. You can scoop out the really wet stuff then mix around the remaining litter. Then replace the lot maybe once a week? Depends on you and ChaCha.
oh really jersey?
i have a litter box scoop! looks like i will be using it now, yay. it seems like it is less of a mess to clean up when using wsp?
i am going to the hardware store in a bit. good thing i have my dad to carry the bag from the store and to our house
LOL! i will let you all know what kind i get!
You can get horse stall pellets too. I’ve used & liked Woody Pet before. I have just noticed though that Jersey hardly sneezes now and doesn’t seem to have wet nose like she did. This could be coincidence but it seems to be since I haven’t used woody pet (the yellow one that worked well – maybe pine?).
The cat bags of Yesterday’s News might be a cheaper paper litter for you too, if WSP don’t work out.
so it can cause sneezing? and what happens if bunny ingests the pellet? i’ve never seen chacha eat her litter before..
Plenty people use them with no probs, I just wondered if it was something Jersey was sensitive to is all. Probably something you want to see you are not sensitive to Brittany.
As for eating them, it’s no biggy – safe to nibble on. You just don’t want them making a meal of it though!
the brand that i got is blazer. it has no additives and has a 9% moisture o_o;;
my dad didn’t have too much fun carrying it ![]()
i got the same brand too.WOW Blazer right?i checked their website and they also make animal bedding but it costs more.i got 5 bags of it.
i used to use Feline Pine which is pretty much the same-only cheaper.my bunnies are fine with the switch.they tried to nibble it but spit it out right away.
i called 4 Home Depots before and none of them knew what i was talking about.i had to go to a Home Depot an hour away from where i live just to get the wsps.its all worth it.
when the pellets are soaked,it turns to like wet sand.pretty easy to scoop up the wet parts and keep the unused one.make sure you use a little bit because it tends to rise when its soaked.
oh wow! blaze has a website? what is it?
dang, perhaps the home depots in your area were sold out? O__O wow..
so just a thin layer in the box, correct?
Let me know how she likes it, with 3 bunnies carefresh gets rather expensive ![]()
yeah just a thin layer is enough.the first time i used it,i put too much and after a few days it filled up the litterbox.
the website is Wowpellets.com.it says it on the bag.my boyfriend was the one who saw it.he investigates everything i bring home.LOL
home Depots around here doesnt know what wsps are.they kept telling me about the wood briquettes. -___-
If she likes the WSP well enough, you might want to go back and get some more bags and store them. Since the WSP are seasonal, they get hard to find as time goes on.

Mine weren’t reddish but more like a darker brown yucky color. Here’s what the New England pellets looked like (the bad one)

Here’s the Spruce Point (good pellets)

I don’t think the brand is important. I don’t think the wood is important either and I haven’t had bad experiences with non-pine pellets like runawaybunny – I have a much easier time finding hardwood pellets in the northeast, but they seem to work as well as pine (a soft wood). I think the brands available will vary a lot based on location so it’s hard to make a recommendation.
hello everyone i bought horse stall pellets for my rabbits and the lady at the feed store told me i should spray a find mist on them so they break down before even putting the litter box back in with the bun’s ?? what do you all do? to my understanding wsp are about the same as hsp?? so do you just put them in and use them whole or do you lightly spray them first?
No, you don’t need to do that. I just put mine straight in the box. They are basically the same.
Also you may want to start your own topics in order to get more responses for future questions rather than attaching questions to old posts ;~)
Oh… that bunny pee will break ’em down pretty darn quick.
