  EEEK! I wrote about this problem a few days ago (see “Recently Resistant…”), but I am getting so frustrated! Hazel has basically stopped using her litterbox. She still pees in it sometimes, but recently she has started peeing (in various amounts, usually on the small side) while she is out in her area in the living room. Also, she has started pooping in her cage (she never did that before). She has also been displaying a lot of hormonal behaviors, so I am assuming this is what’s happening. I honestly don’t know what to do. She has a pre-spay appointment on Tuesday, and her spay is Wednesday. I will have them check for a UTI, but I don’t notice her straining or any other UTI-associated behaviors. Is this just what I have to deal with until her hormones recede? Any tips?

  If she’s being that bad about marking, might be best to keep her confined to a certain area until after her spay, if she’s marking she’ll be less inclined to do so in a space that is “hers” already. I’m going through a similar issue with my bonded pair, since they bonded they have lost their litter habits – they can be frustrating, but they can’t help it.

  Definitely keep her contained. 1) it will help you in the clean up. 2) It might help he regain her habits. 3) she will have to get used to being contained anyway for after her spay.
  
  You did mention she was dribbling in your other post so that is something indicative of possible UTI.
  
  What litter are you using? Maybe she’s becoming intolerant of it.
  
  You mentioned you’ve only had her 2 weeks? Was she around any bucks prior to this? Neutered or intact ones?

  Since the spay is on Wednesday keeping her in a confined space like the others mentioned would be good, of course you’re still going to have messes but it will only be in a small area. And post spay of course she’ll need to be confined too for her own safety.

  I am using a generic “rabbit litter” that is made of compressed plant fiber. She still uses it to pee on, although I did notice there were wet spots on her towels this morning =( and she pooped all over her cage. So it looks like she is using her box only half the time to pee and poop. I am not sure if she was around any bucks prior to me having her, although the lady I got her from said she had 5 other rabbits (she showed them). Should I just keep her in her cage all day? I feel bad about that, especially since it’s the weekend and I am home all day to be with her.

  How big is her cage?
  Bunnies can get really out of sorts when they are sick, so that adds up to a UTI too. You really should take her in before it travels and gets more serious, if thats what it is. Rabbits are normally very clean animals, and don’t necessarily just lose that habit on purpose. Samson never did, before or after spay. Even after introducing another rabbit she’s kept her litter habits.

  Her cage is about 40 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 36 inches tall. I am taking her to the vet on Tuesday for her pre-spay check up, and I am definitely going to talk to them about a UTI. It is strange that she has started ignoring her litter habits all of a sudden when she was so good about them before. I tried to get her into the vet last week, but the exotics veterinarian had her service blocked off. Luckily though, she works with a lot of rabbits and it’s at a veterinary school, so I’m sure she’ll be in good hands. I am also a veterinary student, so I can make sure Hazel is doing well throughout her spay on Wednesday too (I get to watch). I just hope she’s ok. She’s such a cuddly, affectionate thing, and I just adore her.

  That’s good. Because she is 2 years old (I think that’s what you said in your other post) it seems odd that the hormones would suddenly kick in now. Good luck with her spay! Mine is getting spayed on Thursday, I understand your worries.

  Mine is also doing the same thing. Pooping and peeing everywhere. I decided to get her spayed as well. For the time being she doesnt have freedom in the house and I bring her out to a safe outdoor pen when its time for exercise. She was potty trained until a few days ago…i discovered this as she decided to pee on my couch. yay for vinegar.

  Wilbur always pees on my bed despite having literally perfect litter box habits ): but she always has. I’m hoping, just hoping, that the spay might get rid of that habit.

  peeing on the couch/bed isn’t not being litter trained, she’s marking that spot (and basically you) as hers. Samson did that to our bed once and that was the last time she was allowed up pre spay

  I am not letting mine out, aside for exercise and snuggling. At least until her spay. My daughter ran away chanting “eeeeeew eeeeeww pin pin smell eeeeew” when she marked the couch.

  she is 3 1/2. BonBon is her therapy buddy. I don’t say pet because she is treating her like a sibling. xD She also has hypersensitivity. So you can only imagine how horrid it smelled. haha.

  Even after the vinegar she won’t sit in the place she peed. xD i think she is traumatized lol. I never knew bunnies would make such good therapy pets. We both fell in love with BonBon right away though. Which surprised me. My daughter is afraid of all things that move. xD what does she do when she meets BonBon? Kisses her! Taken from that point on. I think she will forgive the stench in due time.

  Bahahha probably! Bunny pee is gross. That’s such a cute story (: I wonder why she responded so well to BonBon… Have you ever taken her to see a horse? I work with kids and therapy horses, it’s interesting because you would think that the kids would be so scared of 1,200 lb animal.

  Actually we have! it took her about 2 visits to start petting their noses and feeding them. This was a huge thing for Abby. Problem is that she lives a town away and the commute is too far for daily visits, especially in winter. The horses start leaning on the fence ( 3 of them) when they see Abby coming with their fave snack.

  No worries, Sarita; thanks! Do YOU have any advice for me about Hazel’s problem? She gets spayed tomorrow, so hopefully that will take care of the issues.

  I think what you are doing (vet check up and spay) are a good start. Even after a spay it could take up to 30 days for their hormonal behaviors to decrease.

  Ahhh I’m so sorry!!! I got confused and got you confused with Ms-Read-A-Lot!!! I apologize for my stupidness ;P
  
  But I do have some advice…have you been going into her cage while she’s in it or around it? Sometimes they get really territorial which would cause them to mark. If you could go into to it to clean it and whatnot it might be worth a try to have her somewhere seperate while you do it. Might not help but it’s been working with my bun
