I bought my spayed bunny about 3 weeks ago,and have a nice set up for her in  the bedroom. She is eating timothy hay and veggies but will not eat the pellets( timothy complete) . I would like to know if  there is a healthier pellet, it was the one she was on at the SPCA. ) Will it harm her to just eat the hay and veggies? thanks for any help.

Many bunnies do just fine on a no pellet diet.  If she does not eat pellets, just increase her veggies, make sure her hay is always fresh and available, and watch that her poops are normal.  We had a discussion about this a few months ago.  You can see it here https://www.binkybunny.com/Default.aspx

hi debmaxwell – welcome to Binky Bunny! 🙂 Congrats on your recent bunny adoption.

my personal favorite pellet is Oxbow’s bunny basics T http://www.oxbowhay.com/Shop/showProduct.sp

the website has all the product nutrition info and a store locator.

I’d agree with Osprey that bunnies don’t absolutely need pellets, since they’re a convenience food.  Your bunny will also be ok on lots of free-feed grass hay and veggies. You might add some mix in some other with the timothy – like oat, orchard or brome just for variety. I’d also recommend upping her veggies to several cups a day (depends on her size) of at least 3 different veggies.

my rescue bunny Rosie just started eating them after 2 weeks and now she loves them! if you have a bag anyway may be worth persisting; just a very small amount in a small bowl and try giving them at a different time than the veggies. The timothy based pellets are a healthy kind to be giving but probably don’t taste quite as great as veggies so she may be hanging out for the tasty stuff!
mine both love Oxbow BunnyBasicsT (it actually smells quite nice too!)

Hello Deb! Welcome to Binky Bunny! It sounds like you have a very halth concious bunny on your hands eating her hay and her veg first!

My buns used to be pigs about their pellets – but after awhile they realized that the pellets were going to come every day and really weren’t all that special and now they just kind of look at them, then look at me with their big bunny eyes and beg me for a treat! Maybe, since your bun is a rescue, she may have grown up on an all pellet diet, as many people do not understand how to properly feed a bunny and feed way to many pellets. This would probably mean that she is so used to pellets that she’d reather eat the new and tasty hay and veggies (that area also much healthier….its a win-win situation!)

As the other post-ers mentioned above – this isn’t something you need to be concerned about, because the hay and veggies are really the key parts of her diet. How many veggies are you feeding her, and what kind? You might also want to check out the diet section of this page if you are unsure of the amount of vegetables and type that she should get each day.

Anyways, congratulations on your new bun friend! Is this your first?

Yep – they are all right.  Pellets are nice and convenient, but if you feed the right mix of veggies (and of course lots and lots of hay) she’ll be fine.

I look at pellets like a multivitamin – maybe not necessary if you eat properly but can’t hurt in moderation.

My Pepper used to inhale her pellets when I first got her, but now that she realizes that they are not going anywhere, she may nibble and then come back later for more.  As long as it’s all gone by the next meal I don’t worry.
