I guess I don’t recall my California geography that well (been gone since ’95) but would one of the local residents down there in the fire zone let us all know if they are safe and sound and if the shelters in the area are safe? I am very concerned about all of you!

        Be careful please!

I would like to know too. I’m surprised you are hearing about this in Alaska! This fire is all over the news here and they have mentioned that both the Santa Cruz shelter and the Scotts Valley (?) one are accepting animals of people who need to evacuate so they appear to be safe. I worry so much about the animals!  It just makes me realize I am not at all prepared if this happens here.  Also, there was a horrible tornado near Denver!  Hope all our Colorado members are ok too!

Oh yes, I did hear about the tornado. It flipped me out because they usually don’t show up that far north and west? I do know there’ve been some in California too, though. (I hate tornadoes, only seen one but that was enough for me. Not to mention we watched the Wizard of Oz every year at Easter when I was a kid!)

Prayers going out for all members and their families (furry or otherwise) in the path of Nature’s Fury! Take care everybun! 0.o

The Rabbit Haven isn’t a physical shelter building se but rather individuals who will house/foster rabbits at their own homes.

I’ve just been pricing emergency kits on Ebay – they even have one for pets.

The fires have forced the evacuation of 5 or 6 of our foster sites and volunteers’ homes, as well as the shelter advocate for the Scotts Valley shelter.  So far, the shelters themselves (Scotts Valley and Watsonville) are not threatened.  The local VCA hospital has set aside kennels to house small animals, The Rabbit Haven’s Cavy House is accepting guinea pigs for short term care, North Star Small Animal Rescue is standing by to house gerbils, rats and other small animals, Mickaboo is helping with birds, and the local horse society has set up temporary shelter for horses at the Watsonville Fair Grounds.  Auntie Heather is coordinating the temporary housing of lots of bunnies until the fires are out.  We are supposed to have an adoption show in Santa Cruz on Saturday, which may get cancelled if the smoke continues to get worse.

For those of you that don’t know the geography here, Santa Cruz is on the Pacific Ocean, over a set of low mountains from the Bay Area.  Scotts Valley is about 5 miles away.  These fires are up in the mountainous region, which thankfully is not too densely populated, but the people who live there have horses and tend to have many animals too.  A good portion of our volunteeer base and foster homes are in Santa Cruz County.  To get to Sant Cruz from the Bay Area you have to take Highway 17, which goes right through the effected areas.  Travel is a nightmare, heavy smoke is causing problems for drivers.

California Highway 17 is second only to the AlCan as the road rumored to have been built by “a lout who designed the route either on the way to Hell or coming out.” You are all in my prayers that you will be safe and that rain will come to you quickly to put that fire out.
I couldn’t remember how far Scotts Valley was from the SC mountains. I knew it was south of there, but didn’t remember that it was so close.

I hope you will all be okay. I am very worried about you all. And of course I assume this is a human caused fire. Unless you’ve had thunderstorms there lately.

Living on the edge of a national forest, there is nothing that terrifies me quite like fire. I kiss my life goodbye every time one starts up here and only hope I can get the animals and the kids out in time.

If anyone you know is effected by the fires in Santa Cruz county, they can find information on The Rabbit Haven’s website about emergency aide available for their small animal companions.

Unfortunately we are past our rainy season, so I don’t think we’ll be getting any to help with the fire, but the winds have died down and that should help immensely. I didn’t see a whole lot of new smoke from the fire this morning, so hopefully it means they are making progress towards getting it under control.
