The fires have forced the evacuation of 5 or 6 of our foster sites and volunteers’ homes, as well as the shelter advocate for the Scotts Valley shelter. So far, the shelters themselves (Scotts Valley and Watsonville) are not threatened. The local VCA hospital has set aside kennels to house small animals, The Rabbit Haven’s Cavy House is accepting guinea pigs for short term care, North Star Small Animal Rescue is standing by to house gerbils, rats and other small animals, Mickaboo is helping with birds, and the local horse society has set up temporary shelter for horses at the Watsonville Fair Grounds. Auntie Heather is coordinating the temporary housing of lots of bunnies until the fires are out. We are supposed to have an adoption show in Santa Cruz on Saturday, which may get cancelled if the smoke continues to get worse.
For those of you that don’t know the geography here, Santa Cruz is on the Pacific Ocean, over a set of low mountains from the Bay Area. Scotts Valley is about 5 miles away. These fires are up in the mountainous region, which thankfully is not too densely populated, but the people who live there have horses and tend to have many animals too. A good portion of our volunteeer base and foster homes are in Santa Cruz County. To get to Sant Cruz from the Bay Area you have to take Highway 17, which goes right through the effected areas. Travel is a nightmare, heavy smoke is causing problems for drivers.
