Hi my Cookie bunny is half Netherlands’s dwarf and half lionhead. She’s two years old and was spayed. I adopted her. Today she bit me when I put my hand in her cage to put hay in which she’s not done before and tonight she’s stuffing hay in her mouth. I’ve read lots of posts on here about unspayed rabbits doing this but mine is spayed. When she holds the hay, she lays down and wants me to pet her. I wondered how long this would last and what I should do. Why would she go through this if she’s spayed? I have no other rabbits and she came from a home where there were no other rabbits. I read about putting a ‘baby’ in for her but what do you suggest as I’m worried the stuffing might hurt her if she tears it up. Like I said, I’ve read a lot about unspayed females doing this but not spayed ones. I’ve had females before (all spayed) with and without neutered males and I’ve never had one do this. Thanks for any advice. I’ve searched all over the Internet for answers.

You are correct, it is usually is intact Does that will do this when pregnant or having a false pregnancy. And sometimes, neutered males!

Did you have her spayed or did you adopt her already spayed?

There is a chance it was an incomplete spay or not a full ovariohystectomy. That could explain her experiencing a false pregnancy…

Other then that, I can only speculate on why she would be doing this. Perhaps some hormone imbalance of sex hormone because of an adrenal condition? Or just a stress reaction.

My neutered male does this. He’ll grab and ferociously dig the hay and nestle into it and stops the burrowing when I pet him.
