I have a ceramic bowl I made at a pottery class, it’s sturdy and food-safe, but my bunny likes to chew on it. Is that safe? I’m concerned it isn’t safe for him to chew on it. Thoughts?

Rabbits like to chew on things for many reasons. I think in many cases with food and water bowls, a lot of owners report their rabbit tries to toss it out of the way. Does this track with what you’re observing?

You can try to redirect that chewing energy to more safe toys. I don’t recall the safety of ceramic, but I imagine there could be paints or finishing chemicals that may be dangerous so best to try and prevent it if possible!

I think he chews it because it has his food’s scent and is tough and stimulating for his teeth. Although he has lots of chew toys, he still loves the bowl. I’m thinking I will just remove it from his area and only give it to him for meal time. He doesn’t chew his water bowl, so that can stay with him.

It is a bit weird that a bun chooses to chew on ceramics. It probably does taste of his food. Ceramics could be food safe for a human but still not healthy to actually eat. Ceramic glaze can be non-toxic, but it still is a form of glass, and eating glass would never be good.

Could you attach one of his chew toys to the cage bars or some other solid object? If you have wooden chew toys, perhaps someone could help you drill a hole in one or a few of them and you could tie them firmly to the cage with bunny safe twine (natural hemp, sisal or paper twine). That could make them more interesting to him.

Yes, I attached some of his toys to the sides of his x-pen and I made a DIY hay rack he can chew on in addition to the hay in his litterbox, that way he can have a little more mental stimulation and so the toys appeal more to him.
