Hello, I noticed today that his ear was dropped on one side. I read it could be an ear infection? I noticed him scratching that ear in particular while videoing him to upload it here. If he did have an ear infection what could I do to help him? Since I dont have a job im not sure how likely it is I could get him to a vet. Is there any medication I could get him at petsmart or something? I read that vets usually just treat them if they have symptoms. He has the head shaking, itching, drooping ear, but no redness or inflammation I can see. I just dont want to wait until it gets bad to treat it. I have had him almost 2 weeks now. Here is the video https://youtube.com/shorts/_s3P9936XJ0?feature=share

It looks like something is going on. If you just got him, it would be good to have a vet take a look at him anyway. He looks young in the video. My guess is that it could be ear mites, which are hard to see unless the infestation is REALLY bad. Revolution is the best treatment, which is only available through a vet in the US.

PSA: Never use anything containing fipronil on a rabbit. It is toxic to them. Fipronil can be found in over-the-counter flea medications like Frontline, etc.

Do they get fleas often? This bunny was in a small plastic crate up against another baby bunny at a live stock auction. So who knows what he could have got. But I know for large animals a vet comes there and gives them all their shots and examines them but im not sure if they do rabbits.

Is ivermectin a good treatment for ear mites? I just read it was online. I have ivermectin i use it to deworm guinea pigs.

The bunny really should see a vet to confirm what the problem is and what the best treatment is. Please make sure to find a rabbit savvy vet as some vets don’t know all of the nuances of rabbit care.

You can use Ivermectin to treat ear mites, but it isn’t as effective as Revolution (Selamectin). It requires several treatments spaced 14 days apart. The dosage is different than if you were treating for internal parasites. I would still have a vet help you to make sure you have the dosage right. Plus we’re not sure it is ear mites. We’re just guessing, so it’s good to have a proper diagnosis.
