Why does my Rabbit hate beds and boxes?

Hi, I am new here and new to rabbits and I have sooooo many questions about EVERYTHING, but I’ll try to not over due it and just start with this one question. Why does my Rabbit chew and pee on every bed I buy him/give him?

I first got my rabbit 3 months ago, he was a stray my local humane society found. No one knows how old he is, but we can all assume he is an adult. Being new and all we first bought him shaving bedding and got rid of that because it’s messy, smelly, and dusty, etc and got him a litter box. He loves sleeping in that thing even when it’s full of his pee and poop, he also chews on that too. So I bought him a hay and grass hideout thing and he loved eating it and throwing it around, but hates sleeping in it like he would jump from the litter box into the hideout and back… I was looking at pictures of rabbits online and saw that some people are using cat beds. I dug out my cats old bed and put it in there with some alfalfa and what do ya know he is just eating it and it’s soaking wet… Just last night I put a box in there full of alfalfa, because they like to burrow and I think he is just eating the box and using it as a toy box, as he puts his toys in and takes them back out later to play. He is such a cutie, but kind of a brat though, should I just stop trying to get him to love beds or is this normal behavior? I am also thinking of getting a little camera to monitor him for a few days to see what he’s up too when me and my boyfriend are at work/sleeping. Please let me know what you think !!

Why is he a brat?

Many buns like comfy cat beds but many also don’t. Many buns also like to pee on soft things.

Some buns just don’t like beds. Kurotta is one of them and just very much prefers the cold, hard tiled floor as his place to sleep or rest.

What we view as comfy and nice places to sleep may not be the same for them. I do put cardboard boxes down with hay inside, but that’s more like a hideout/extra place to eat hay/chew and digging toy for Kurotta rather than a resting place.

Btw if you don’t want him to sit in his pee and poop, you can either make a grate for your litter box or get one with a grate.

I think he sounds like a typical rabbit! I gave my rabbit a cat bed, the next morningit had 50 holes in it and there was stuffing everywhere =) The bed he likes is IKEA Duktig, it’s made of wood so it’d take him a while to tear it apart. I have vet bed fleece in his bed, easy to wash and doesn’t seem tasty at all.

Buns like destroying stuff. It’s not really called destruction, it’s called bunstruction, and that’s for a reason! He probably doesn’t understand the human intention with toys, but whatever he does with his toys and boxes, I bet he’s having a great time. And that’s what’s important.

What do you mean by a grate? Do you have a picture or anything?

You can make a litterbox grid from wire mesh or knitting mesh. The pee and poop goes through and the bun stays on top of the grid. I don’t have a picture, but I know that several of our members use litter box grids, so hopefully someone will post a picture!

I didn’t DIY the grate – I bought a litter box that came with it. I’m not sure if this type of litter box is available in your area though. Here’s a picture of mine:

As you can see, the litter is at the bottom of the grate so Kurotta’s poop and pee will just fall below it.
