I read somewhere that rabbits don’t wiggle their noses for smell, is this true?

Rabbits move their nose when they’re having active thoughts, which is why not much wiggling happens when they’re sleeping!

Weeell… the scientific explanation is that the pink mucous membrane in a bun’s nose is full of chemical receptors, and wiggling the nose exposes more of that membrane to scent – even tiny traces of it. Good for survival purposes.

The non scientific explanation is they do it to enslave hoomans with their cuteness and then have us at their beck and call. Kind of like Samantha in Bewitched.

I’ve heard, though I don’t have a whole lot of firsthand evidence so far, that buns wriggle their noses fast when they’re excited/interested/agitated about something and slowly when they’re in a calm/relaxed mood.

Yes. Because they’re trying to determine what’s what via scents. In other words, all’s well (scent-wise) leads to less wiggling and a calm demeanour. Anything new or strange means potential danger, so more wiggling to smell it better and figure it out.

Cool! My bunny wiggled her nose pretty fast when I let her out of her cage for the first time to explore. Probably excitement =)

Funny, I’ve been a Bun Mom for well over 10 years and never really thought why they do it. I just know it’s adorable. Agree with Q8, pretty much everything they do is super adorable to make us helpless to their powers….
