Why? What prompted you to chose the name? I’m just curious When I got Lucy I was dead set on the name Sarah, but the guy I was dating at the time said “That’s awesome, like Sarah Silverman, I love her!” And I didn’t, so it ruined the name! I got her home, and as she got more comfortable, she would run around like a little mad bunny. My mother a few times said “She’s a little terror! Little satan bunny!” All in jest of course, so for a second, in a fleeting joke, I called her Lucifer. And Lucy stuck
It’s a cute little name, I wanted a “people” name, and it suits her!
So what are you stories?
Porky was what the lady, who fosters animals from the shelter he was abandoned at, called him. She said it was b/c his coloring made him look like a porcupine. We were going to let DS rename him, but DS kept changing his mind every 2 seconds and we would call him Porky in the mean time. After a while and many mind changes, we decided to stop trying to come up with something and just kept calling him Porky.
I wanted a food name, and I’ve always liked Japanese things.
My bunny’s given name is ‘Koucha’ which means ‘black tea’ in Japanese. She is called Chacha, or Koucha-pin (made up from my dad LOL) most of the time.
When I saw her picture, I knew what I would call her. Tis was fate
About a year before I got Mr. Bunny, a white snowshoe hare decided to take his afternoon naps right next to our house. My mother nicknamed him “Mr. Bunny”. When we got a little domestic white bunny, we made all kinds of jokes about how he looked just like the wild bunny. The name Mr. Bunny ended up sticking.
I’ve always loved matching pet names, so I knew that my second rabbit would be named Ms. Rabbit before she was even born. Now I can tell people that I have a Bunny and a Rabbit.
Eddie was originally named George. But it didn’t fit. One night I was watching an old episode of Fraser and the dog on there was named Eddie. So I looked at my little bunny boy and decided to name him Eddie.
Lolli was originally named Tootsie. But it didn’t fit either. I wanted a sweet name since she’s a sweet girl. I also didn’t want to name her the standard “dark colored” pet names – stormy, midnight, etc. Nothing wrong with those but they didn’t fit either. So I thought of Lollipop. In retrospect, I should’ve left her name as Tootsie cause she looks like a tootsie roll now. LOL
I always prefer people name for my pets.
When we were going to get Otto I went through a ton of names for him. DH finally suggested Otto and we both agreed on it. I only realized later that Otto the Orange is the mascot of his favorite college bball team. So Otto’s a mascot now! Haha. I tell him to cheer on his basketball team.
I read a story as a kid called “Hannah is a Palindrome” about a girl named Hannah and a boy named Otto. They learn about palindromes and Otto makes fun of Hannah for being a palindrome, then someone points out that Otto is a palindrome too. I though Hannah was a cute name, plus it’s a popular German name like Otto is, and I knew I wanted a girl bunny named Hannah. Her name was originally Merlin, and we still call her The Mer, but I think she looks much more like a Hannah.
Cute stories.
We (my boyfriend and I) found Huckleberry at a farm store. They had a horse’s watering pool filled with dirt and bunnies. She was the only one that wasn’t scrambling for food or packed into the cinder block holes with 10 other rabbits. She was also the tiniest and feistiest looking one. She sat on top of the cinder block and was covered in mud and just looked fierce. We picked her out, at the time thinking it was a he, and discussed names. I really didn’t think of any, I like waiting to know the animal’s personality first. My boyfriend said that he imagined her going on many adventures, getting in over her head and just having a wildly exciting life, like Huckleberry Finn. I bounced the name around for a few minutes and by the time we had her home, her name was Huckleberry Finn. When we realized she was a girl, we thought it was too late to change her name and that it really wasn’t all that masculine, after all, most of the time we call her Huckles or Hucklebunny anyways. My mom calls her “my little grandbaby” and treats her as such.
Tammo was named after a hare character in the Redwall series…my sister wanted to name him “Snickers” but I wanted something more original, lol.
Peppy was named after a dutch-looking rabbit character in the video game Starfox…yea, I’m a bit of a nerd . The woman who originally owned Peppy said that her boys were under the impression that Peppy was a male, and I never did ask what they called her. She’s always been Peppy to us!
I’m not really sure how we came up with Remi…saw it somewhere and it just kind of stuck
Milo was originally named Ninja at the shelter, being a black bunny and all. I didn’t really like it though, and the named Milo just jumped out at me when I was looking at name lists and seemed to fit somehow.
Mango – he came with that name.
Peaches & Peppermint – I honestly don’t know why I named them that.
Toffee – I guess I like food names – her partner who is now at the bridge was Twizzler.
Bobby – he came with that name. And Bogie (who isn’t really mine but I’m beginning to wonder if he’s ever going home…I’ve become attached to him anyway, he’s a sweet old bun) – he came with the name Bogie.
I don’t really have a preference as to naming my rabbits – I’ve had all kinds of names in the past. I just name them the name that comes to me.
I named Dexter after one of my favorite TV shows Dexter But for some reason I never even call him by his real name because I have so many nicknames for him…
I usually call him Bonbons or Bumba as does my fiancee. My mom calls him “The cilantro kid”.
Pacey was named after the man I got him from he was outside the shelter pacing back and forth not wanting to take him inside. I adopted him from the man right on the spot before Pacey ever seen the inside of the shelter. And with the help of fellow BBers I went with Pacey.
Marshmallow looked like a giant campfire marshmallow. And she was super squishy when I first got her. It fit her really well.
Walter (RIP) reminded me of an old man from the second I saw him and he acted like an old man. The name Walter always reminds me of a sweet old man who lived by my grandma. And it is my favorite character from the show Fringe.
Dini was named Jax but it didn’t seem to fit him and I never called him Jax. He decided he didn’t want to be in his cage any longer and found a way out. I fixed it he found another way. It got to the point the entire cage was covered in bungee cords to attempt to contain him. But that wasn’t going to happen got home and there was a little dust bunny waiting patiently by his cage door. Didn’t want to name him Houdini so I cut it down to Dini.
Kate and Spence are named for Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. I really love both of them and thought it would be cute. Also they were already bonded when I got them so naming them for an old school, hollywood couple seemed appropriate. I also considered Bogie and Bacall, but Kate and Spence seemed more appropriate: bunnies are definitely more romantic comedy and less noire.
LOL the zoo names by order…
Kokanee….because when I brought her home, I was ecstatic and I wanted her name to reflect how I felt…to make people laugh…I wanted a funny name… Kokanee is a Canadian beer and I had a box of it on my floor. She romped over and chomped it soon after bringing her home so I thought that might be a good name and it just felt right. Everyone laughed when they heard it and were enchanted with her-how outgoing she was. They teased me because she was not ‘beer’ colored…but that was not the reason for the name
Kahlua-because I wanted a K name and a booze name-to match! My mom came up with it.
Rupert-wanted to rename him Corona to suit the set. Rupert was his name at the shelter-kept it.
Chuck-his name at the shelter, kept it.
Noot-his name at the shelter, kept it.
Norman (pig) I named him to match Noot who I’d gotten him to be friends with-Noot and Norman. Noot passed a few months later.
Rocky-new pig, norman’s friend..that’s for Norman Rockwell….so you see I try to keep patterns but instead I have Rupert Kahlua Norman and Rocky…odd bunch
Mikey-my dog. He came as Petey. I chose Mikey for three reasons. One, it sounds like Petey so he’d adjust quickly. Two, we have only ever had M dog names in my family. Three, Micheal is Dave’s middle name. It was so perfect, and it suits him
Fish? Sam I Am…like ‘one fish two fish, red fish blue fish’ because he’s a red/blue betta I think a goofy name is correct for a fish
Bugsy – I thought was a boy & I wanted a villian type name to go with Bonnie & Clyde, my cats. So Bugsy after tyhe Vegas mob killer guy. Well he turned out to be she but the name stayed because she is a killer. Extremely dominant 3 pound bun. Has beat the crap out of my 14 pound old cat regularly for refusing to groom her. Put the run on a German Shepherd too (but Brandy did live with a ton of other animals so was used to being a VERY GOOD DOG)
My bunnies were all named in a way so that my husband felt part of the process. I picked out 3 names- and he picked the name he liked the best. Cotton- she is white and fluffy Schroeder- my husband LOVES Snoopy and Peanuts Griffin- named after our local hockey team- Grand Rapids Griffins.
So I just pick 3 names I like- and then by letting him have the final say it evens out the fact that he really had to input into picking out the pet. I can’t help it, I just KNOW when it is meant to be my pet. And he has never expressed an interest in choosing anyway- it is always “one of those” conversations. “Which one do you like?” “I dunno, which one do you want?” “I am asking which one you want?” “I want whatever one you want.”
Monkey – because she loved climbing up high when she was a baby. Monkey fits
Moose – a BB name, had to have an animal name to match my Monkey
Smudge – was a foster bun, decided to not name her an animal name as she was a foster, not ours. So she has the cutest spot across her nose.. thus Smudge. Now she is my Smudge Bug.. she has her animal name now
Lago’s name came from Lagomorph. A friend of mine suggested it to me. A vet at the UC Davis vet hospital thought she didn’t have a name because they label their unnamed rabbits “Lagos”.
With Panko, I was feeling hungry at the time and his name reminded me of the japanese breadcrumbs cause I was thinking about food.
Cheddar – I saw this pembroke welsh corgi puppy at a pet store and named him Cheddar for fun. It wasn’t my puppy nor did I have any intention of taking him home. Then I saw these bunnies at another pet store and became obsessed with getting a bunny. I asked my boyfriend everyday, may I have a Cheddar??? I wanted an orange bun and the breeder brought out this fat orange bun (amongst other ones) and I knew he was my Cheddar.
Pepperoni – I don’t know. She looks nothing like a Pepperoni. I just like food names. I considered naming her Cheeto or Potato but Pepperoni was funnier. Her name is Poopy now anyways since I never call her Pepperoni.
Meatball – After my boyfriend and I got him from the breeder, we discussed names while driving home. His body was just soo round and he’s a tort, so Meatball fit perfectly.
Now I have a Meatball, Pepperoni, and Cheddar sandwich. Just like Subway’s new sandwich. LOL.
Cheddar, I love food names too!!!
I agree, ChaCha. I just think it’s really funny.
