I was looking at the great habitats gallery and came across one that says it belongs to a rabbit named Moxie. It is a 2 story cage that is a darker wood frame and wire on the rest. It is so nice! I LOVE that habitat and would very much like to build one for my bunnies. I (well, my Husband) was wanting to know how big does it measure? I would really appreciate the info! Great idea by the way! I bet Moxie is a very happy bunny!

I was trying to find this info out myself, but I don’t think this user is very active on these forums anymore. Maybe someone else has more info?

LOL imagine that! I hope someone has the info! I will do what I can without it. Judging on how big cat litter boxes are (that’s what litter box in the cage). It really looks like it is 2′ deep and 4′ long but I can’t tell how tall. In the pic it looks huge! I went to Lowes and looked at wood 2’x4′ and it looks too small I’m sure for one bunny it is great but I am building for 2 bunnies who can’t actually live together so I have to have a divider in it somehow. Thinking either spliting it down the middle so each bunny will have 2 levels. Of course I will have to make it longer.

I would suggest you wait to make big housing decisions until after they’re altered and you’re ready to start the bonding. Plus, you don’t know how big they’re going to get. For two buns, I’d really suggest you have at least 4×4 feet of horizontal space (the size of a dog xpen), and as always, the bigger the better.

It would have multiple levels and they would only be in there for a few hours. We are making 2 cages. They won’t be living together. We have the space for the cages. Right now, they are taking up my entire living room. They had a room to themselves but I gave it to my 4 year old who wanted her own room. I have to do something. I would rather make a cage with levels than have them take up my whole living room. I am not willing to stick them in a small cage. No, I don’t know exactly how big they are going to get but I know what thier breed is and the average size and wieght of that breed. It will be big enough. Why should I wait until they are altered and bonded? They have to have a place of thier own.

Oh, I just thought it would be easier in the meantime. It’s usually a good idea that you start over with new housing anyways after they are bonded.

Nibbles, I looked at the habitat that was made for the rabbit named Moxie. It says it is by member kjel, and this member has not been around in a long time.

You could make something like it, or you could build something similar out of NiC grids. You could fashion it after the Leith condo here, using wood and grids.

I understand your 4-year old needed a room — but what do you mean by the rabbits won’t be living together? Do you mean never?

I guess the thought of them living together makes me a little nervous. Maybe because Baxter is so much bigger than Bella. LOL Don’t the rabbits still need thier own space even after they are bonded? I mean, I wouldn’t completely go overboard on how large the space is. I would very much like them to be free roam in the living room and kitchen some day. I would just like them to have 2 or 3 levels each. The 1st level would be the main living area with food, water, hay and litterbox. The 2nd would be toys and things for stimulation and the 3rd would be private space for getting away and sleeping. I am wanting to make 2 of these. I wouldn’t make them huge because they would each have one. They would still have thier xpens for a “yard” too. Right now they each live in thier own xpen. I don’t like it because once I put thier things in there, they don’t really have much room to play. They take up 1/2 my living room. My kids are also able to move the sides of the pens around. I don’t like that at all either. I would much rather build something then go buy a cage. The ones at the pet store are way over priced and tiny

Why are you supposed to start over with housing after they are bonded? Is it a territorial thing? Are they supposed to actually share the same cage after they are bonded?

That cage is very much like what I want except I want to make mine deeper. I also want to make 2 that are stackable or I could put them side by side.

Living in shared quarters is the object in bonding. Unless you bond them to live together, there will always be poo wars. Your rabbits would be able to enjoy more space if they shared one bigger habitat as opposed to two smaler ones separately.
Yes, the new habitat, or the habitat make-over, after bonding is because of the territorial claim that rabbits lay on their former personal space.

What if I make a cabinet like 3 level cage and put a temperary wooden divider in the middle of it for them to live in now and open it up and rearrange everything after they are bonded?

Each bun would be territorial over their half of the cabinet hutch respectively. It depends on the rabbits, too, sometimes two rabbits just bond without territorial issues but it is the exception. I recommend you hold off like Beka said with building a permanent thing until they are bonded.

You absolutely want them to live together after bonding! That is the whole point! One cage or pen to clean, one set of bunny items, they share their food and litterboxes. It doesn’t matter if Baxter is bigger, I’ve seen flemish and dwarf pairs before. Size and breed do not matter. If they’re in xpens right now, I would just keep with that for now. Can you move the xpens somewhere else, maybe a dining room, and just temporarily give up that space?

We don’t have a dining “room”. Our kitchen is an Eat in Kitchen. They are doing well the way I recently moved them. I may move them again after Baxter is neutered. Right now, I have to put them in seperate rooms because Baxter is putting his scent everywhere and marking because he is right next to her. I am going to house train them in seperate rooms (they have thier litter training in thier pens down great!). Once Baxter is neutered I will move them closer. Maybe free roam in the living room. This situation is only temperary and working out great so far! It looks like Baxter is going to be able to be neutered sooner than I thought! We have a vet appointment for both of them to get a check up this Tuesday at 11:00. Hopefully the vet will do it soon! He is 3 1 /2 months but his boy bits are descended and he is big (probably 5-6 lbs). Eventually they will both be free roam together. I think I just going to build each of them a hidey hut with two levels. That sounds more logical in the long run since they won’t be locked up in a cage.

Keep in mind that it’s possible you’ll have to “re-littertrain” them each time they move to a new location. It can be a long process.

I have a strange picture for you. My mare was 16 hands tall, one day someone’s tiny shetland stallion got loose and into our pasture and for days he’d follow Jessie around trying to figure out the logistics.
