› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Who’s a little arty?
Well I’ve notice that there are quite a few arty people here, like Adee & her photgraphy, SageCat’s lyrics, Lightchicks performance stuff…and there’s more…Mimzmum I mean you ![]()
So tell me, what do you do? Do you have a secret fetish for painting sea shells? (I do…but don’t live near a beach…) DO you play an instrument? Paint, write poetry? Are you a great actor, singer etc?
Even if you don’t do so well on the arts side of things, what is your special talent?
I’ve just bought paints & started to paint pictures…I’m not good at it (yet) but it’s a nice past-time and it de-stresses me
My 1st attempt at a person, she ended up facing the other way because a face was waay too hard for me to paint.
Oh very good! ^_^ I am terrible at drawing people, front or back. But I do like to sketch animals. I don’t do it much lately as my eyes are going. I encourage you to do a lot of drawing, if it’s what you enjoy. Believe me, I never thought I wouldn’t be able to draw and now, well….
*ahem* Okay, off my old lady soapbox….
I love to sing. Always have. I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket now, way out of practice…but it doesn’t stop me. Much to the chagrin of my family and my pets! ^_^
Arty? No. I do think I’m an okay whistler! ![]()
I’m a renfaire musician http://www.merrymeasure.com
and I also design and make all my costumes for performing
I studied art since I was 9, also was in performing arts (theatre, choir, dancing) all through college. Here’s a link to my website that only has 2 samples from my dusty portfolio. Now I curate exhibits for other artists – pays the rent and allows me to appreciate artists better than myself. ![]()
I used to play a trumpet in jr high. I took oil painting lessons at 16. I used to do cake decorating at 16, I got into ceramics. Then came embroidery. 6 years of embroidery then I got carpel tunnel.
Taught myself to play a recorder. I had a nice wooden one. My hands hurt to play now.
Oh yes we lived in this house me and my son and his dad. I painted palm trees and beach sand with seashells on the hallway wall. The bedroom got it too. ON the east wall I painted a sunrise. ON the west wall I painted a sunset.
On my sons door I painted a surfer in a tube. In the bathroom I painted a wave with a surfer. Something to look at while you sat there you know hehe.
We were going to buy the house then the guy changed his mind. So we moved out. I bet he had a hard time getting those sunsets off the walls. Thing is was water paint. Haha.
OH then I took up sewing. Now I am too impatient for it. I can do alterations and darts but I just don’t like to do it anymore. I can see me trying to cut a pattern and Cotton with Ruby coming to chew on the paper. Actually I was still sewing when I first got Cotton. And yes he did come to chew the paper. Hurts my back to cut stuff out on the floor tho. I dont’ have a table big enuf and place is too small for it. Easier to buy the clothes.
OH I had my pin cushion on my sewing machine table. Cotton was sittin up there. When I decided to sew something I went over and found Cotton had pulled all the pins out of my pin cushion. Ahaha. Silly boy. Glad he didn’t eat them.
So those were my hobbies. Now I have bb and buns. I guess grooming buns is my new hobby. Cleaning litterboxes let see vacuuming up after them. Ohh… what else. shopping for them.
OH and I painted a mermaid on the bathroom door. Bob saw it and wanted me to paint his wall at his house the outside wall . So I painted ocean mermaids shells sea turtles dragonflies and a castle in the sky for him. OH and some dolphin and a yacht too. Got paid real good $ for that too.
Wow, I had an idea that there were some seriously talented people on here but you guys have blown me away. I can’t wait to check out those websites.
Sewing your own costumes Wendy, what patience you must have! Bunnytowne, I understand. I don’t even have the patience to learn sewing, even though I’ve always really wanted to know how.
I scrapbook!!! Mostly party pics and bunny pics though LOL I can draw (am really good at drawing horses and dinosaurs
) but haven’t drawn seriously in years (Yes I can draw bunnies too-cartoon bunnies though!)
See, sewing doesn’t take patience. I have 2 machines and a serger and can knock basics out in no time flat. I’m such a weird size that U’d have to alter antything off the rack anyway that it’s easier to start from scratch.
What impresses me are people who embroider or make lace. I work for 2 hours and I have something that is at least vaguely dress-shaped. They work 2 hours and have a couple of inches. I’d cry.
oH I had my pin cushion on my sewing machine table. Cotton was sittin up there. When I decided to sew something I went over and found Cotton had pulled all the pins out of my pin cushion. Ahaha. Silly boy. Glad he didn’t eat them.
Heh – that’s why the studio is a no-bunny-zone. Between the pins and the cords for the foot-pedals, it’s too dangerous.
I sew, although I haven’t made anything in a few years. My mother taught me when I was 5, I still remember the first top I made. I do some knitting, crocheting, fabric painting, baking, wood carving… I’d like to try pottery some day.
Some of the carvings:

– Annette
I sing. Does that count? I’ll record something for you guys.
I’m kind of artsy. I love sketching things and i doodle alot, lol. But the thing i am really good at is creating posters and such things along that line. I can coordinate colors really well and just know where everything needs to go. The kids at my school call me an “over-achiever”
Singing counts! I’d love to hear something digx, if you have the time to record.
Annette, that’s pretty amazing. I never actually thought about how carving got onto carved stuff, I guess I just assumed magic or something hahaha.
K&K, can you post something up? Aren’t horses one of the hardest animals to draw because of their body shape? Scrapbooking is a really good idea because it shows photos off so beautifully and there’s nothing like going to someones house and spying on their life in a scrap book. It always makes me jealous that they have the motivation to do something with their photos. Mine just sit on my computer for all eternity.
Wendy, can you post a pic? I saw renfair stuff on Gilmore Girls and I think it looks so much fun. I’d love to see a costume
I loooove history and the idea of being able to immerse yourself in another era is fascinating.
Kaitlyn, what sort of posters do you mean? Over-acheiver – they’re just jealous!
C&C – I recorded something and posted it while you were posting your reply! It’s right above your last post – let me know what you think!
wow rachel… you have a beautiful voice! there are some very artsy & talented people here thats for sure! i love to sketch & doodle and am planning to get into watercolour too. i just got a gift certificate for an art supply store for my b-day & am looking forward to some shopping later today ![]()
here are a couple of pencil sketches i did a few years back.

I used to draw horses all the time. Love horses. Forgot about that. Y’all are having me reminisce here. The things that time forgot. My Mom and sis in law tried to get me into college for art or veterinarian. I just wanted to get married. Ran off with some abusive jerk to California. Divorced and moved to Florida as far away as I could get.
Art is fun. Crafts are fun.
like when my school has upcoming events that ask me to design the posters to put around the school. and my project, well i dont want to pat myself on the shoulder, but they are pretty awesome. lol.
I write novels and short stories don’t know if that is considered arty lol. And I do ink/pencil drawings
babybunsmom – I love the sketch of the cat and mouse! And thanks for the compliment! ![]()
Umn, have you tried out for american idol??? That’s a great voice!!
BBM Great drawings!
BBM, those are beautiful & so detailed.
digx – I agree with K&K!
Kaitlyn – you know that’s a really good talent cause thats advertising & people who can come up with effective advertising can come up with a lot of $$$.
Sonn84 – of course writing is an art form! Do you have particularthemes etc you like? I’m a book addict but as many books as I read, I can never come up with any ideas on writing anything.
I mainly write Fantasy Horror anyone who I let read my books says it is a mix between Stephen King (LOVE HIM) and J.R.R. Tolkien. I have been writing since around 4 years old so it just seems to come naturally I love it but I rarely let people read the things I write.
Wow there’s a lot of talent on this board, I am totally amazed you guys and Rachel you have a great voice! As for me, well I am a jack of all trades master of none kind of person. I’ve dabbled in a lot of things but haven’t really dedicated consistent time to any one thing (too busy), among them are painting, cross-stitch, crochet, knitting, sewing and woodworking only some of which I suppose are truly arty.
I love checking out everyone’s talents! What fun! Wendy, your group sounds great! I’ve only been to Ren Faire a few times, but I loved it…I always wanted a real costume like you make! (No sewing skills at all, here!). And Rachel has a FABULOUS voice! And BabyBunsMum and Pam have such great drawings (and I loved the Spockie pictures on your website, Pam!).
C&C, great painting! (Faces are hard..I’m right there with you!)
I have no talent for anything tangible. Which makes me very sad, but oh well. I can’t draw or paint or create something you can touch.
I played flute and alto saxophone and oboe in high school, but haven’t touched them since.
I won 2nd place in the Los Angeles County Fair high school poetry division a decade-and-a-half ago. I used to write constantly, but I find I’m no longer depressed or angry enough to write, anymore, though!
So I take pictures, mostly landscapes. That’s my hobby. I’m not even close to being in Adee’s league, but it makes me happy!
For work, I design the lighting for plays, musicals, and dance concerts. Lighting is hard to explain to people, because it’s intangible. People understand costumes, because it’s clothing. Scenery is walls and furniture and solid objects. Light is…light. And most people don’t actively notice it. But it can change the entire show without the audience even realizing it!
Here’s some pictures of some of my shows. Enjoy! (If you want to see more of my pictures–fun ones, and show ones–I used to post them on my MySpace. Although I’m months behind, now. I should catch up soon…I use the same screen name there, if you’re interested.)
“For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf”, Pomona College

Long Beach City College Dance Ensemble 2007

“Jekyll and Hyde”, Fullerton Civic Light Opera (2008 Ovation Award in Lighting Design–Ovations are Los Angeles-area theatre awards)

“Little Shop of Horrors,” Moonlight Stage Productions

“The Nutcracker (2005)”, Inland Pacific Ballet

Can’t wait to keep seeing what all of you do! Post pictures…I love pictures! ![]()

Lightchick, you’re lighting is fantastic!!!
I particularly like the floor of Little Shop of Horrors, and the Long Beach rainbow.
Definitely award-winning.
If you ever work with a traveling company that goes to Florida, book yourselves into my workplace. It’s a renovated theatre that has professional live productions every season. That’s in the other building. My building is just museum gallery space – with spots to light the paintings that seem to burn out every other week.
Pen people: Writing is DEFINITELY an art form.
Thanks, Pam! I noticed when you posted the thread about getting that job that there was a theatre at your museum, too…maybe some day I’ll wander out your way! All my jobs have been in So. Cal. so far, though.
Yeah, lamps tend to go out when you leave them on as long as a museum must!
I never noticed lighting until I went to see The Glass Menagerie in 12th grade. The play calls for so much of the story to be told by lighting (kind of like A Streetcar Named Desire).
I loved the pics LC, esp Jekyll & Hyde & the Pmona College one. I have to admit the rainbow is pretty spectacular too.
Wow – lots of awesome talent around here!
It is safe to say I am kind of arty.
I actually have a few degrees in art – BFA (art history) & MFA (photography) – hey, just because it’s in Art doesn’t mean it was easy to get.
With photography, my strength is documentary – I have had a couple of shows. I am trying to get better at photographing food for my blog – food photography NOT the same as people photography!
Then I went to Cooking School – the Culinary Arts – YUM!
I also love making things with my hands. I have started sewing & embroidering: been doing purses & pillows more than clothes. I’m starting to embroider T-shirts.
I know how to weld and a little woodworking. J and I have been making furniture.
I am currently painting a canvas rug for our living room.
Sage_Cat, sorry let me get this straight – you do everything? You sound like super-woman! I’m so impressed, sewing, welding, embroidering and woodwork. You make furniture and pillows, you paint rugs & cook…wow…thats amazing!
Wow! So much talent
I am the boring accountant of the family which is why I made sure to marry and extra talented musician! My husband plays like every instrument there is, but his specialty is saxophone. I myself like to do little crafts here and there, but I think the majority of my creativity I spend on creating bunny cages!
I took lighting tech in college so I can appreciate your work. Everything is all computerized now – do you use all that cool stuff? (I got my theatre degree in 1988)
Hey Lightchick – I know a bit about lighting from my photo assistant days, but that was all stills – lighting theater is much different. You are so right that it can make a big difference, yet most people never notice it.
BTW – I have 2 “tricks” for being able to do all the stuff I do.
First, I’m 42 -I have had the time and opportunity to learn.
Second, my husband makes a good living – therefore, I don’t “work”. My job is to take care of the house, finances, food, and all of the little stuff – I never thought I would say this, but I LOVE it! Well, except for the cleaning. It affords me time to work on crazy projects.
Aren’t you a chef or cook or something similar? You husband must love you taking care of the food
I only cook cookies – I’m amazed that I’m not morbidly obese.
Lightchick that 2nd pic there the lady lying down. I need a chair like that for my back. Or a stone or whatever it was. Mind if I borrow it?? by the way the pics look great I love them.
I draw, paint, sculpt, costume, build things and bellydance. I plan on painting a bunny mural in our new house when we move in in November.
Here is one of my paintings and a pic of me dancing.![]()
11022222281271.jpg
11022222289154.jpg
I’ve always wanted to learn how to really bellydance! I have a bellydance exercise dvd but somehow it’s just not the same thing.
– Annette
what a beautiful painting! That’s what I aspire too, ability (or gift
) like that!
Nice to see everyone’s talent!
I guess my best talent would be needlecrafts. I love to cross-stitch and am usually working on 3 or 4 projects at a time. I also train and work with young horses which I can say is a talent because I’m still here to type this.
skwerlybuns – as I was scanning down through this thread, I saw “here is a photo of me dancing” but missed the “painting and” part,
So, naturally, I though the painting was a Photo of you dancing – WOW, now that is some talent.
Awesome painting by the way, and you look so happy in the photo!
Yes, I am a chef and I taught at a cooking school – designed classes, recipes & menus – for 5 years – most awesome job! My husband loves my cooking. He use to live on Grape Nuts & frozen pizza – sometimes he is such a guy. ![]()
I am a historical fiction writer and a film producer and have worked on a few major films here in California. But like Sonn84 i am shy about my writing, i used to be a Journalist but am lacking inspiration these days… still looking… for something I guess.
Wow, everyone has such incredible talent!!!! And Rachel – awesome voice! I am blown away by everyone!!!
I like to draw cartoons and write scripts (all types – shorts, TV, screen). I won a Telly and an Emmy (LOCAL Northern CA Emmy, so it’s small potatoes) for a 1/2 show TV special I wrote and co-produced. But it just wasn’t something that held my interest. Found it all terribly boring. I basically wrote for hire. Did that for 13 years. I would love to go back to scriptwriting again but this time write what interests me. Even if it is just for me.
Ive just started a MySpace page for the band. Nothign fancy but you can hear our music there
http://www.myspace.com/merrymeasure
I’m in landscape architecture, so i have to be artistic. I design landscapes and plazas. i also do some graphic design. i also draw realistic landscapes and animals (in graphite and ink).
I also can write upside down and backwards, im not so sure thats a talent though, much less artistic! lol! has something to do with me being ambidextrous.
I will have to post some of my landscape designs and animal drawings on here.
right now im in class and dont have my external. lol!
Thanks to y’all who commented on my painting
I too, am impressed at all the talent shown in this thread, and to all those aspiring to learn crafts of any kind, the important thing is to do it! the most important thing is not how well you do it, but the amount of love that you put into it! ![]()
Uspdie down and backwards writing, thats definately a talent! Like Mr Squiggle, can you draw pictures upside down and backwards?
And who is Mr Squiggle you ask? He’s the man from the moon!
im not sure who mr. squiggle is, but i have never tried to do a picture upside down and backward! lol!
Hah! I forgot he was Australian….I guess I just assume all our TV shows come from overseas….not the moon, like Mr Squiggle!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Squiggle
Wiki will tell you the answers you seek ![]()
OK sonn84 and bunnyfoofoo and everyone else who writes, I’d LOVE to read your stuff! I’m a read-aholic (not looking for therapy thanks
) and I would love to read your stuff. I don’t edit or critique, but yeah, just send it my way if you feel comfortable and I’d love to read it!! On top of my busy schedule (40hrs/week work 45+hrs/week volunteering) I put back 1-2 novels a week so I’d love more material!!
Your a book fiend like me, I’ve held off begging because I know how personal stories can be but boy have I wanted to beg!
I cannot claim the ability to read 1-2 novels a week, I’m reading at the rate of about 1 every three weeks at the moment with my crazy uni schedule, currently readin gone which is taking forever because it’s based on psychology and so not really that easy to read. On the up sode it’s a fascinating look into suburbian life in the 1930’s and how easily relationships can crumble!
What do you read K&K? Any specific genre or authors?
Cassi, prehaps if you post the novel you’re writing
, the others may follow! I used to read a book a week. Great way to escape. I haven’t really been able to get into reading too much for last 12 months thou. The other day I was wondering why that was. I figured it out. I’m doing as much reading as ever, it’s just all BB!
I would also love to read anyone’s writing. I’m a total novel nut!
Some of these are so amazing! You guys are talented!
I like to think I’m artsy, but I don’t have as much time as I’d like to get into it. I am into photography, painting and tie dying ![]()
1. A photograph of a creek along the Appalachain Trail near Gettysburg, PA.
2. A photograph taken in Arlington National Cemetary.
3. My first painting named “Aura”…inspired by an aura reading I had done last summer.
4. my sheets! ![]()

110281214654.jpg
1102812114058.jpg
1102812123329.jpg
That painting is fantastic I would have it on my wall in an instant!
The creek is amazing but I love love love the cemetry, it’s got such power and emotion in it. I looked at it, and looked again…Its so moving, especially since the row the soldier is in looks unfinished like there will be more people buried there. So sad, such a beautiful photo because it conveys emotion.
Davita – how do those sheets not keep you awake at night – he, he, he!
Thanks C&C but that one was mostly just excellent timing for me. The sheets wake me up every morning, that’s for sure! But I love them.
davita,
I think your photographs are just superb!
