Oh my gosh maggies whole ‘thumb’ nail has ripped off at some point?!?

I went to give her some cuddles and found the entire nail on the floor of the rabbits pen area, its appeared to have come clean off the quick and not ripped the quick. I checked her out and I can see a red looking stub of flesh where the nail used to be I hadn’t noticed earlier as she has been acting normal, hoping around and eating fine. Never came across this before, should I be concerned? Is there any after care I should be giving her?

I would assume this is a sign she needs more frequent trims?

I don’t know how common this is, but if the toe seems to have healed all right and doesn’t continue to swell or show ill-skin signs, it seems all right. I would keep looking at the paw twice a day at least to make sure it stays healthy in appearance.

This can be a sign to clip more often, as longer nails have a better chance of snagging on things; however there are times when nails snag on stuff regardless, so I would more frequently check nail length and trim when you see there’s some distance between the tip and the quick that you feel comfortable trimming.

Are there signs of damage on any other nails/toes?

Bunky had randomly ripped his dewclaw off and it bled for a bit, the whole nail came off. My vet said they should be okay as long as it stop bleeding and you keep their place clean. I had left over antibiotics and pain meds so i gave it to him and he was painful for a couple of days but he will only have 4 nails on one paw haha.

I agree with wick, often times the nails are too long and it will break if they jump on the floor.

Thanks for the replies! Has helped to put my mind at ease!
I have been checking her nail and it doesn’t look like there had been any additional bleeding. She seems to be hoping around everywhere still. I will continue to keep an eye on it.

All the other nails are looking healthy and intact but also quite long so have them both booked in the vet for a nail clip tomorrow (maybe they will recommend something to prevent infection) I usually try and leave it as long as possible between nail trims because it really stresses them out, depiste being really comfortable around people and loving strokes, they are both so nervous when it involves anything to do with handling them :/ however this situation has made it clear they will just have to try get used to it for their best interest

I believe letting them go long can work negatively towards you overall because it let’s the quick grow out more and more, meaning the amount you can trim gets less and less, if that makes sense.

It isn’t unusual for a bunny to catch their nail in the carpet or something similar. Sometimes the nail gets completely torn off and sometimes it just cracks the nail. If it was bleeding, then you know this was a recent injury where the entire nail was ripped off. Sometimes we see incidents when the entire nail falls off, but it was actually an old injury where the nail was cracked, remained attached, and then “died” and fell off at a later time.

Anyway, if it isn’t bleeding anymore then it will likely be OK. Just keep it clean and watch for signs of infection.

Oh wow that’s another reason to keep them short then! I will have to think of a system that let’s me clip their nails as easy as possible! Maggie is actually the worst, I avoid, picking her up all together cause she kicks and try to leap out my hands so it’s very nerve racking trying to clip hers, Glenn isn’t to bad, he had time as a solo bunny to really bond with me so he will (nervously) let me handle him if I need to. I don’t know if anyone happens to know any tactics for handing an extremely wriggly bunny?

That’s good to know, I’d be tempted to think maybe it cracked and fell off then because I can’t think of anything that would be able to tear it.
