Hi all! so Mars has been going through hay really, really fast. he eats so much hay is always on my weekly shopping list. I buy him the 48 oz bag of timothy from the petstore, but i guess its time to start buying in bulk. Where do you guys buy your hay? and how much of it?

i’m not sure where you’re located, but here in the USA, some popular places that i’ve bought hay in bulk from are the websites ‘smallpetselect’ and dr forster and smith. hay is ultimately cheaper when you buy in larger quantities, so I think as long as you can go through it in a decent amount of time, and can afford it (obv) that might be the way to go. I’ve bought second cut timothy 60lb boxes for my two bunnies multiple times from small pet select. a 50-60lb box usually lasts me about 4 months. they have free shipping if you spend ($40?) and also usually get it shipped out very fast. for me it’s always been same or next day. i’ve usually had a very good experience but whenever you buy hay in bulk, there’s always more of a risk because it’s not hand sorted like it is in the small bags.

just recently i’ve bought the 50lb box of oxbow timothy from dr foster and smith’s website because they often have very good sales through oxbow, and free shipping if you spend a certain amount. i’m very impressed with the quality as well.

other members may chime in with some other places as well, those are just the two i have ordered from. the BB store I believe also sells hay in bulk. also if you decide to buy from an online store, i’m sure plenty of websites will have very good prices over the next few days through cyber monday. this may be a good way to dive in, hopefully at a cheaper price!! good luck!!

I buy the 40# compressed bales from tractor supply, they run about $15.

If you live in an area where horses are popular, you’d be sure to find bales of horse-quality hay. That is suitable for rabbits.

                Websites I order hay from:

                Rabbit Hole Hay
                Small Pet Select
Sierra Valley Hay (cheaper to buy from if you’re on the west coast of the US)

My favorite is Rabbit Hole because they have free shipping no matter what you buy, and they’re always honest about the current quality of their hays. If they have a batch that has a lot of yellow/brown stems in it (usually from it not being in season) they’ll say so on their site.

I agree with jerseygirl too, getting a bale of hay at a feed store is a great option because you can see the quality right in front of you, and a single bale usually lasts a long time!

I’ve always got really great hay from small pet select! Just be aware it ships in a box that says what it is so if your bun is snuck into an apartment or something it might not be the best idea.
