So i’m kind of noticing that whenever nemo runs around the room he kind of slips on the floor and I can hear his nails. It sounds like they’re getting longer but because he won’t let me hold him yet i can’t see because of the hair on his feet since it hides the nails. So I’m going to book an appointment for him at the vet but I want to know if it’s time for me to cut his nails?

You can trim a bunny’s nails without holding him. My bun Panda will not let me trim her nails while being held, so I’ve had to experiment. Sit down by the bunny, pet him for a couple minutes, then see if he’ll let you touch his feet. If so, try to get a good look at the nails. Give him something to snack on, then begin cutting the nails. He may try to run off; just repeat the process. It is a bit lengthy, but the best option if he refuses to be held. Ideally, bunny nails should be checked every month, and cut when needed (depending on the bunny, every/every other month).

I usually just get my bun’s nails cut at the vet. It saves me a lot of effort and stress for $10 about every 4-5 weeks!

$10? Woah, thats cheap! Where i live, the nearest vet that even does rabbits is like over an hour away and crazy expensive, so i have to do most stuff myself.

Most people seem to trim the nails once a month or so, depending on how fast the nails grow. You can usually see how long they are when your rabbit puts their toes on something, like the grids of a cage, so it may help to get a good view by holding a treat up a little so they’ll show their feet.

The vet is best if you are afraid of handling your rabbit but it is something to practice if you are willing to try. I do something similar to DarthVadar’s technique and trim a few nails at a time while they’re distracted. You just need to be very careful and ONLY trim the tips.

It would be better if the vet cuts the nails.
