Hey BBs! I’ve been noticing that Penny’s ears are muuuuuuch bigger than Max’s and she’s 10 weeks old and already as long as him (he’s over a year). I’m thinking that maybe she’s not a dwarf…. How big do you think she’s going to get? She’s probably 1.5 lbs at 10 weeks.

I’ll love her either way, I’m just curious!

If it helps, Otto was 1.5lbs at 8 weeks and he’s now 3.7lbs at five months. He’s a Holland Lop and shouldn’t grow bigger than 4lbs (at least according to the breed standard; I know larger Hollands exist) so I think he’s mostly done growing. He might just fill out a little more. That doesn’t mean Penny will grow at the same rate, but I would agree that at that size she’ll probably be bigger than your average nethie (I think their max weight is 2.5lbs).

I’ve read that they are full grown between 6 and 8 months on average (bigger breeds mature more slowly).

Edit: Do you have a current picture of her? If she ends up under 5 or so pounds, she could still be a mix of one of the dwarf breeds (Hollands are dwarfs, because they have the dwarfing gene, for example) without necessarily being a nethie. Polish is another small breed that comes to mind.

If she’s currently 1.5lbs, I think there’s a good chance she’ll still be a “dwarf” breed, she just doesn’t look like a nethie. She’s super cute though! Maybe she is polish? I don’t know my rabbit breeds very well, but I know they generally max out at 3lbs. What kind of fur does she have? Rollback or flyback?

She is probably a mutt, like my Thistle boy.

Rollback is longish thick hair, like on a Holland Lop or a Nethie. If you brush the fur in the wrong direction, towards the head, it will slowly “roll” back into place. With flyback, if you brush the fur in the wrong direction, it almost immediately snaps back into place. I believe Polish have a flyback coat.

i think her fur is rollback, but honestly she rarely lets me touch her for long enough to find out.

her ears just throw me off. they’re so big!!

I think you can be pretty sure they’re at full growth in a year. They may still be leaner as young adults, but once they stop growing and start to fill out it’s likely they are adults. That’s the time to watch their weight. Spockie was a full adult at 5.5 lbs, but he grew to about 8 lbs. at his heaviest, when he was about 3 or 4. He slimmed down a bit and maintained at around 6.5-7 lbs. most of his life.

She’s such a cutie! I agree, those ears don’t look very “nethie” to me, but I am no breed expert. Also, since she’s so young and already at 1.5 lbs, I’m guessing she may end up being as much as 3-5 lbs full grown. We will just have to wait and see! What breed (or breed mixture) she is should become more evident as she matures.
