Wheezing? Snoring? Sneezing? Sighing?

Hi,

My little bun is a Holland lop. He is about 4-5 year old in-house rabbit. More detail on my questions are in the video description but to sum it up I’m wondering if I need to go see the vet about him making these weird sounds. (He hate car ride and will get stressed out by it so I try to avoid the vet if there is no reason to go). He is my first and only rabbit so I hope you guys can share your thought on this.

He recently stop eating, drinking, and passing for more than 24 hours so I took him to the vet (Sat. Dec. 7th) who gave him fluid, pain medication, 0.9mL cisapride, and some oxbow critical care force feeding on spot. At home, he continue with the pain medication (which has run out), 0.9mL cisapride twice daily (continuing), and oxbow critical care (stopped, since he start eating by himself). A few days later (around Monday), I notice his new behaviors.

He start making these wheezing/snoring/sighing/sneezing? sound. [NO DISCHARGE] They are not that often but here and there throughout the day. I don’t know what they are, he didn’t seems to be making these noise before the treatment. I’m not sure if I force feed him wrong and food went into his lung or if he just like that from the weather changes (It’s getting colder here in Vancouver and was snowing on Monday) or just annoyed at me for monitoring him ever so often. If anyone could help me identify these sound or let me know if I should go to the vet, I would really appreciate it. I’ve been staying up, checking on him often since visiting the vet and I’m tired, stressed, and a little lost.  But the little guy is a fighter and able to eat and drink on his own and seems to gain his energy back so I have to fight too!

Did the vet check his teeth?

Yes, did the vet check his teeth as LBJ asked – this is usually the age when rabbits start having dental problems and Holland Lops are very susceptible to dental problems (molar spurs).

The vet did have a quick look and she said the teeth look fine.

I’ve never heard of molar spurs, is there symptom I should watch out for?

The other thing she mention was that one of his ear was a little tight but we have to treat him not eating first.

I just gave him his dose of cisapride and sit with him for a bit. I notice this for the first time. 

Is this white discharge in his eye because of respiratory infection? The other eye didn’t have any white part, just runny. (That eye is irritate most of the time since he was young, the doctor said nothing we could do about it) I also check his nose and on one side is a tiny bit wet. I wipe it and there is no colour. I’m not sure if coming from the nose or drip from his eye. *panicking*

Not wanting to eat certain foods that they would normally eat, sinus congestion and/or nasal discharge, runny eye, etc can all be symptoms of tooth problems. What your describing could be a number of things, but tooth problems is usually investigated first because it is pretty common (considering his age and his smooshed face).

 

Did the vet look at the molars or just the front. They have to use a special scope thingie to look at their back teeth. If tooth problems are suspected, then they often will do x-rays too because the roots can actually overgrow up into the sinuses or eye sockets.

I think she only look at the front because she only use the thingie to part his mouth but didn’t really open his mouth.

I just call them because I’m too worried about the noise and the discharge. I made an appointment in an hour, I’ll bring him in and have him look at. I’ll keep you update.

I’ll def. ask her to check the molars too.

I just came back from the vet…

She said that the eye discharge seems to be because of the block tear duct, so she flush it. As for the noise he was making she said it’s nothing to worry about. It could be a mild respiratory infection or it could be nothing. Unless there is white discharge, there is nothing to worry about. His heart and lung sound normal and he doesn’t seem to be in any pain. His molars looks good too.

So now, aside from the cisapride, I have to give him drops in his ear because of some build up. And keep a close eye on his eating habit, any discharge, or more aggressive noise.
