So the Japanese kimono thread made me think about this. Let’s take a poll – what nationality are you?
I’m 1/4 italian, 1/4 polish, 1/4 japanese, and rest is german, scottish, and irish.
My mother was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and a an American serviceman stationed over there during the Korean war. When they tried to come back to the US, the country didn’t recognize my grandparents’ marriage OR my mother’s paternity! My gfather had to adopt her! Crazy times.
That’s a wild story! I’m glad they found some sort of solution.
I’m mostly Scottish (we have our own kilts and everything), and then the rest is a mix of Irish and English.
Stan is mostly Pennsylvania Dutch (which actually means “Deutsche” but no one pronounces it that way). He also has some French Canadian.
Fun!
: D
I have no idea…just plain ol Canadian I guess??
HAHA I don’t think I have anything special mixed in there!
That is so crazy Cainan! At least they both were able to come over! You hear all these sad stories about mothers and babies who had just been left.
I’m a little bit of this, little bit of that. European smorgasbord.
I am from my moms side: Chinese, Okinawan, Cherokee, bits of Irish, English, Dutch, Spanish, German.
My mom’s maiden last name was English (anglo saxon).
From dads side: Chinese, Filipino, little Spanish.
My grandma on mom’s side is full blood Okinawan, my grandpa is tthe Chinese/European mix.
My grandma on dad’s side is Filipino, grandpa is Chinese.
Fun fact: I’m 3rd generation Asian American :3
Cainan! Its nice to see a mixed nationality person XD
People enjoy playing the guessing game with me lol
I’m 1/2 Polish, 1/4 Belgian, almost 1/4 French, and a bit Native American mixed with the French (I think I’m 1/16th). Unfortunately I never got my Indian card to prove it (registration was closed to those over 18 so my dad couldn’t get his card) but all of my cousins have them and are able to work on the reservation and such. My grandma, uncle, and uncle’s kids still live up there (upper peninsula in Michigan).
Despite my grandma being 1/4 Native American, she has very pale skin and red hair like me (she still dyes it red). I always laugh thinking about her going into the tribal health care center and the looks she must get. lol
Elrohwen, I recently found out that I am more Cherokee than I thought. My great grandpa was half!! O.O
Oo boy. Mostly Scottish and Irish, got some french, english, dutch, ukrainian, polish, german in me as well. And I’m canadian living in the US… ha.
I am Italian, German, Russian and my fiancee is Scotish Irish
I am Irish and German mostly with some Cherokee Indian, English, French and Scottish mixed in.
On my mom’s side: German, Cherokee and English
Dad’s side: Irish, French and Scottish
What a story cainan!!!
My dad’s side is strait up greek and my mom is 1/2 scotish and 1/2 british. I’m second and fourth generation canadian and still have american status since I happened to be born there.
I guess a cool story I have is my dad’s dad came to Canada first and got a job, then he and his mom came over by boat. She got sick and because neither spoke english they were seperated. At five my dad lived on the streets for almost two months before a priest took him in and helped him find his mom and dad.

Very cool! My great grandmother was half Ojibwe. When I was younger I thought it was the coolest thing ever that I was part Native American. The whole culture was so fascinating to me. Still is, but I don’t run around pretending I’m Pocahontas anymore
My dad’s side (the French and Belgian side) have been in northern Michigan for quite a while – my grandma’s maiden name is a street name (my uncle happens to live on that street). It’s a really small community which is pretty cool. I love going up to visit.
My mom is 100% Polish – yay for good Polish food! I grew up in Pittsburgh which is like a Polish capital of the US (though we have no family there – my parents moved for work when I was a baby). Nothing better than growing up around handmade pierogi. Mmmmm ….
Everyone has such crazy stories! Thank you all for sharing, especially cainan and K&K – so interesting!
I am English, Irish, French and apparently Scottish. I say apparently cause my last name Hutchison is of Scottish origin. However, my paternal great-grandfather or great-great-grandfather was adopted so who knows what we are. LOL I know for sure the English, Irish, and French. My maternal grandfather’s father came to the US with 3 sisters and a couple of brothers. If I remember correctly, I should I have relatives in Oregon or Washington or somewhere in that region cause my great grandfather got into a fight with one of his brothers and they never spoke again. Apparently this brother went to the northwestern area but I don’t think anyone in my family kept track. My maternal grandmother is of French descent, maybe French Creole.
K&K…. that story blew my mind. I am so glad he found that priest!
WOW K&K!! O____O!!!!
The story of how I am Cherokee:
My German uncle was married to a woman that could not have children.. so .. he had an affair o_O with a Cherokee lady and had my great grandpa. So I guess German isn’t that far back either, lol.
My grandpa (dad’s side) was in the army and stationed in the phillipines when he met my grandma. my grandma is 1 of 10 children and her famiy ran a restaurant. My grandma served beer to my drunk grandpa She had many many suitors but chose my grandpa hahah
My boyfriend is German, French, Austrian, Dutch. We are going to have some interesting looking kids someday.. lol
Geneology is SO INTERESTING!!!!!
Geneology is SO INTERESTING!!!!!
National Geographic did this several year long genetic study where they took dna from a few people all over the world and then kept going back through the dna however far they could to determine if we all have the same DNA/genes or if different ethinic groups have different genes. And it turns out, all the genetics turned out the same. At the DNA level, we are literally all the same. They had a special a couple of years ago on the progress of the study and it was super interesting.
Slovak (not to be confused w/Czech, although my grandfather did actually come from Czechoslovakia when it existed but he was from the Slovak side when it was split in the 1990’s). My father’s side is Italian.
I’m not truly entirely sure of my mother’s side other than the Slovak because her mother died of TB when my mom was a baby. But my mother’s grandmother’s birth certificate said they were born in Austria…if that is indeed their BC. My mom is unclear on this.
100% Taiwanese (even born there)…it always makes me a bit more boring when people are sharing interesting geneology stories and I have nothing terribly exciting myself! But as a result of being Taiwanese-American, I grew up speaking Mandarin Chinese, English, and Taiwanese (eventually learning Spanish and Latin as well).
I do think that these “say something about yourself” threads popping up recently are pretty interesting…I love learning about all the BBers

that is what makes us interesting. and the way that we have evolved to look a certain way its so interesting
everyone has such interesting stories haha. I’m just hella Korean. my fridge always smells like garlic and our food is awesome. =P
Angie-la, you need to come to my house and cook Korean food for me! DH went to Korea for work last year and didn’t really like the food (other than the bbq), so now he’ll never let me drag him to a Korean restaurant I really want to try it! And i loooove garlic
100% Canadian, i’m pedigree’d
lol as for my back ground I’m mostly German (by my Mom’s side) 5th generation born in Canada, and a mutt on my dads, we’ve got everything in there, but i’d say 1/4 german there too, some native. Again 4th generation born in canada, we dont follow traditions of our background, just regular Canadians eh?
haha it does take some getting used to =P
I’m Italian! But have been living abroad (studying/working) for about 8 years now. My family is all still in Milan though.
My Dad immigrated to Canada from Germany, so I am 1/2 German. My Mother was Born in Canada and so was her Father, but my Grandmother was from Scotland with an Irish last name :p
Where I grew up all my best friends families were Korean and Philippino, my neighborhood was very Asian, so I love Asian food! I think I was born on the wrong continent some days.
Weeeeeell….
Grandfather on moms side was native american pure
The rest of the family are french cajun actually. My grandmother on moms side has canadian family tree of her family.
Brittany I saw that. Did you see the one where we all came from AFrica. That was the finding on tracing the DNA all the way back. Was very cool show
I’m Stralian. Mum’s Stralian, Dad’s Stralian. We’re all Stralian Mate!
My ancestors Irish settlers. My grandparents have Irish, Jersey Isles and German background.
I like watching those shows on ancestry – like Who do you think you are? It’s interesting how they go all out following one line if it has a historic connection. Linked to famous persons or historic events. Guess that’s good for tv but i’d like to see what the other lines reveal. Also, I’d like to see an everyday person featured, not just celebrities.
I also saw a program on DNA some years ago and it was amazing where they placed people geographically. It really confirmed there’s no races – just the human race.
I’m Hispanic American, 1/2 Guatemalan (Father) and 1/2 Caucasian (Mother – Lithuanian grandfather, unknown ancestry of grandmother.) I feel more connected to my Guatemalan side because I grew up there as a little girl, and know all my relatives on that side (Father’s side.) My mother’s relatives all passed away many years ago. The only connection I have to my Lithuanian roots is a burning passion for beets and horseradish.
I’m German, British, and Swiss, with a bit of everything else European mixed in.
I’ve had people joke that I’m classic for the Swiss – I hate taking sides on anything.
EDIT: I should probably also say I’m mostly American. I can trace back to the Revolutionary War. The nearest branch to immigrate was 14 generations ago.
a nice flavorful mix we have here!
i’m first generation canadian
dad was born and raised in germany and immigrated to canada in his early 20’s to avoid being drafted in the army. germany has mandatory army training / service. mom was born in hungary and when she was a toddler my grandparents were forced off of their farm and shipped on a cattle traincar to east germany when their village was invaded by russian soldiers at the end of ww2. within the year they escaped from east germany into west germany and came to canada.
I’m just a mutt. Hahaha. I’m “American”.
My dad’s side is mostly Spanish and Navajo (my brown grandma refuses to believe that she has any Mexican blood for some reason, but that side of the family came to America way back in the 1400s with Cabrillo and eventually ended up settled in New Mexico, so I don’t believe her, hahaha). That side also found out they have some shared distant relatives, which is funny to think about… gma and gpa are related somehow.
My mom’s side is a bunch of white stuff… I believe it’s mainly Scottish and English, French, Italian (great grandpa was an Italian orphan so we don’t know the history)… there’s probably other stuff but this hurts my brain. My white grandmother grew up in Beliz on a plantation though, which is odd to think about. She actually immigrated to the US at some point. I don’t know the whole story and my memory sucks anyway.
Oh and for those with Scottish roots, do you know what family you belong to? My family has the Graham crest.
Oh, and bunnytowne – most of my white grandma’s family is settled in Louisiana, mostly New Orleans. We share some French cajun for sure :]
I change mine.. i’m 100% 1st gen. BinkyBunnian.
What an original idea for a thread!
I’m Scottish on my Dad’s side and French Acadian on my Mom’s side. I think it’s neat to have Scottish roots because it’s a place of such rich history. My Grandfather moved here from Scotland but, unfortunately, I never got to meet him and don’t know a whole lot about my ancestry on this side. According to my Dad, my love of horses is from his side, as my Great Grandfather was in the British Cavalry which I think is totally kewl.
