So I need inspiration for some new salads for Pancakes.
What salad did you give your bun tonight?
Pancakes had :
Corriander (cilantro to you US people!)
Parsley
Baby Gem lettuce
Spinach
Red leaf lettuce,
Chickory
Parsley
a few shredded carrots ![]()
By shred do you mean grate? (another UK/US language thing I think!)
Is there any reason why you shred them? I give pancakes chunks she has to chomp through!
Let’s see:
Spring Mix
Peppermint
A Broccoli floret
Baby carrot
Dandelion Greens
Dinosaur Kale
Cilantro
Romaine

I buy bags of shredded (same as grated I think!) carrots, since carrots aren’t really the best veggie (high in sugars), having them shredded means I can give them a few shreds and spread it out more than I could say, 1 baby carrot. I also like them because my daughters can feed them to the buns without me worrying about an accidental nip ![]()
It varies from week to week. This week she’s been eating:
Cilantro
Broad leaf parsley
Tuscan Kale
Baby Bok Choy
Yu Choy Sum
Endive
Snow Peas
Carrot Tops, and a sliver of a baby carrot
Baby Greens (Arugula, red and green chard, etc.)
Broccoli leaves

Romaine
Kale
Carrot (two baby carrots, chopped up)
Cucumber (some buns have issues with this one, so use sparingly, mine only get it every so often since it’s mostly water but they love it and it doesn’t give them poopy bottom)
Spinach
One broccoli floret broken up into little pieces
Cilantro
Hey Silly, don’t you love that Tuscan Kale? The store I purchase it from calls it Dinosaur Kale and I’ve heard it called Black Kale as well. It’s so pretty! My rabbits love this and it’s easier to feed than regular kale.
Never heard of Tuscan Kale, is there a difference in nutrients than regular kale ?
I don’t know how much of difference there is, but Hodari prefers it over “regular” kale and it is easier to clean and use. I want to grow some this coming spring. It’s supposed to be good for small gardens.
Not sure Sticker, but it is easier to clean and use. It’s very dark green almost black leathery looking. You can buy it in places like Whole Foods or Central Market. It is easier to store as well as it’s not all puffy like regular kale.
Is Tuscan Kale the same as Italian Kale? My job currently carries it, but I do not bother buying it, due to Chacha not even touchin the regular kale
This is on tonight’s dinner plate:
Romaine
Cilantro
Italian Parsley
Dandelions (CHACHA IS FINALLY OPENING HER MOUF TO NEW THINGS!! WEEE!)
Chicory (NEW ONE SHE LIKES!!)
I have to make a special trip to the Asian market weekly for the Dandelions and Chicory. One of my coworkers thinks I’m crazy that I BUY Dandelions. Well, I don’t live in a house anymore, and if i did, my dad is a terrific landscaper and got rid of dandelions lol. It doesn’t bother me, I’m buying it, so what?
I definitely go over the minimum 2 cups a day, heh ![]()
I’m pretty sure it is LoveChaCha…give it a try with her and see if she likes it…it may taste different than the regular kale and if she doesn’t like it you can saute it up with garlic :~)
Well, it’s morning now so for breakfast the buns had Romaine and Baby Bok Choy and for supper they will have Romaine and Cilantro. I like to make the meals a bit different; Variety is the spice of life for bunnies too!
They always get Romaine and then at least one other veg. Usually, they get more selection but the grocery store didn’t have much options when I went veg shopping yesterday.
Dinausor Kale? I’ve never seen any option in my store other than “Kale”. Stormy should be eating Dinosaur Kale. He is a REX after all! Rawrr!![]()
Breakfast salad was dill & cilantro. Treat was a bite of banana. Dinner will probably be romaine, parsley, a small piece of red cabbage & some outer leaves of a cauliflower head.
Right now:
Romaine
Cilantro
Baby bok choi
Oregano
Basil
1 baby carrot
LPT, I know, mine only carries “kale” too… now i’m curious lol maybe one of the healthy organic places would carry it, hrm.
Here’s a link to an article with a good photo of the dinosaur kale aka Tuscan Kale aka Italian Kale aka Black Kale:

I’ve only seen it at the speciality type markets (which are becoming more common in my area) in the organic section. I have never tried it because my rabbits really love it and there is never any left for me. It’s really a beautiful looking veggie in my opinion.
LPT, Stormy does need to try this LOL.
My rabbits love the tuscan Kale also. It’s called Cavolo Nero where I buy it as it’s an Italian run fruit & veg store. Mum also grew it & those plants just keep producing. It’s currently out of season here though. : (
Tonight, my rabbits had parsley, celery tops and stalk, curly endive, some purple carrot and radacchio.
Hm. I don’t think we have any store that would carry that – but maybe, maybe the health food store might… if I can just talk the boyfriend into a shopping stop there when we go into town for other things lol (it’s 40 miles to the nearest veggie store, 50 to the nearest health food store!)
Tonight Pancakes had:
Cillantro
Parsley
Romaine
Spinach
Kale (after you all rave about it so much!)
Can any one recommend some fruit that your buns like. I have tried her on bannana and apple and she refuses to eat either. I need some healthy treats for her.
The only fruit I regularly give my bunny is dried papaya. She thinks it’s the best snack ever. Sometimes she eats a teeny, tiny section of an orange (no peel) because I love to watch her lick the juice from the corners of her lips. Ha, ha. It’s so cute. For treats, I’d rather give her Oxbow Timothy Treats, though. They are like little cheerios and can be broken in half easily if I feel she’s getting too many treats. Dried herbs and flowers are great, too. Fruit is nice, but it’s so sugary. Anyway, you might keep offering Pancakes the apple and banana occasionally; one day she may just change her mind about them. Hodari snubbed apples at first, too.
The kale and spinach, btw, are absolutely fine to feed your bunny, but they should be given in moderation. You may already know that; I just want to be sure. ![]()
Mine like pineapple, apple, they aren’t too into any berries.. craisins (bunny crack!)
one of my neighbors dropped off a big bag of veggies trimmings and ends for the buns! So they had, a few baby carrots, celery leaves, cucumber, red leaf lettuce, Italian parsley, and some mixed baby lettuces.
oh mine love the tops of the strawberries that I cut off – of course they also love banana’s, apples, peaches, blackberries, blueberries — – umm the only in the world they don’t seem to like is squash.
I knew spinach had to be fed in moderation (too much calcium?) but I thought kale was ok to offer frequently.
Could anyone clarify?

I’m pretty sure it is LoveChaCha…give it a try with her and see if she likes it…it may taste different than the regular kale and if she doesn’t like it you can saute it up with garlic :~)
Why not? It won’t hurt her ![]()
Mommy loves garlic, so if baby doesn’t like it, hehe
New Bunny Mom, it’s fine in moderation.
LoveChaCha, let us know if the diva likes it.
Will do! After work tonight, I need to pick up a head of romaine, so I will get some Italian Kale too. ![]()
I need to get more variety… Right now it is just romaine, mustard greens, and a baby carrot. My problem is storing it. I need to get a mini fridge just for her greens!!!
I will probably add some cilantro or parsley tonight since I used up the last of my romaine last night. I am always worried that Kale will make her gassy.
If only bunnies could eat aquatic plants! I have over 10 varieties of those and they grow like weeds! Can’t say the same for plants that live out of the water…
I just put a list on my phone of stuff that Wally-World will probably have, so more variety will be on it’s way!
What would you all recommend as a good every day base for a salad.
It gets a bit confusing knowing that she can only have most veggies every so often due to them being gassy.
I have been using romaine, ciantro and parsley every day as a base, then adding other various things to spice it up a bit for her. Is this ok?
Parsley and spinach both have high oxalates, which in humans and other animals can cause kidney stones, not sure how it works in rabbits but I prefer to keep both in moderation (3-4 times a week at most). Cilantro is fine, romaine is fine, watercress, bok choy, wheat grass, etc.
I normally have romaine as a base, but I think red lettuce (which looks about the same), or both together, make a good start. Cilantro is wonderfully cheap, so that can easily be thrown in. Be careful with bok choy. It made one of my rabbits really gassy, but many don’t have a problem with it. I also have mustard or turnip greens.
Ooh my bunnies eat:
Yu Choy
Mint
Bok Choy
Mustard Greens
Carrot thinly sliced -maybe 4-5 pieces
Okras for Bubby
Celery
