I thought I would start a thread and share things I find to put in Terry and Maggie’s toy box.

I am getting pretty good at DIYing toys, and finding cheap/free things to turn into toys. Garage sales/baby toys are my best friend!

First, here is a photo of their toy box – that was an old basket I found lying around the house and put to good use instead of buying something new.

In it you can see a collection of random toys – including some of my old high school text books!

Today’s toy of the day (well, toys) are a couple of cars I found at a garage sale. It cost me $1 for both of them. The tractor is supervised only because Terry does like to chew little things, but the other car they get in their unsupervised toy rotation. Terry in particular loves pushing and throwing them.

I inspect them regularly for damage, but so far, so good (despite the poor tractor being tossed around whenever it is out!).

Another favourite toy at the moment is this box. I think I got a birthday present in it. But I found it lying around and had no use for it so I decided to keep it for the rabbits instead of binning it. I want to put a handle on the lid so they can open it. But I put treats inside and they love to shove the lid off (I don’t put it fully on yet because no handle) and find the treats. It’s quite funny watching them try to fit their faces in at the same time!

When the box is empty of treats it makes a great throwing toy. And for some reason they like to put any food they are given in the living room on top of the ukulele (which is right next to them) – after this photo was taken that was where the box went. But it seems to be where all food goes now! I also inspect the box for damages but they have shown no interest in chewing it.

I want to try to update this thread regularly with new and different toy ideas I come across – along with their ratings from the rabbits.

        CARS:

Terry – 7/10 – no food, and the tractor gets in my way. But it is fun to throw.

Maggie – 2/10 – no food, can’t nap on it, but it does keep Terry occupied so I can sleep some more.

        BOX:

Terry – 8/10 – has food, but the food tends to run out quick and it so far has not produced bananas. Is fun to throw at Maggie when empty.

Maggie – 7/10 – food is good, but can’t nap in it and Terry threw it at me.

          This is very cute!

I keep my buns treats in a container with a lid that slides on and somehow my buns know how to open it without a handle. They made a horrible mess the other day! I would say that was their favourite toy that day (and by toy, I mean the entertainment was watching my boyfriend and I scavenge to get all of the treats before the buns got them because the container was full!).

            Haha that’s funny!

My previous rabbit, Ogg, knew exactly where in the fridge her veggies were kept so whenever the fridge was open we had to watch out for her!

I have also had all of my rabbits at some point or other manage to get inside my giant bag of hay and spend hours just munching away before being caught!

If you can find a set of kids bowling pins at a second hand shop or garage sale they’re very entertaining

Apollo has always loved knocking things over, it’s not a game they can play on their own because obviously you have to stand the pins back up again, but it sure is entertaining to watch

Also if you don’t have them yet, plastic stacking cups with treats hidden between the cups.

Yes I do have plans for both of those. Terry will love them I think! Maggie might when she actually feels like moving – it happens occasionally.

I just wanted to share lots of the other little toys I have come across. I don’t mind spending money on the rabbits but I also enjoy doing things cheap or free and the rabbits aren’t going to care either way so I thought I would share here too.

Also Terry once got hold of a glass jar, moved it, and stood it up elsewhere. Not safe and out of his reach now, but very impressive. 😮

                    The digging basket:

This is an idea I read about here ages ago. Get a washing basket, cut an entrance, and fill with something to dig in. I always have lots of shredded paper in so I fill it with shredded paper and sometimes treats for them to find. Because of the broken bit it is supervision only until I replace it.

                    Reviews:

Terry: 9/10. Sometimes has food. Paper is also fun to eat. Burrowing in the paper then doing a flying leap out and binkying across the room is pretty great too. Too big to pick up and throw.

Maggie: 5/10. Sometimes has food. Not good for naps or cuddles. Terry often puts his fat bum in the way of the entrance so I can’t get in.

Maggie and Terry, you should review all the bunny toys I love these too!

Haha thanks they definitely will be reviewing everything over time. When Cherub is ready to come home (hopefully in a few weeks) I’ll ask her to review them too. it’s important to be inclusive and have the opinion of a one eyed rabbit too!

Of course. All kids must be polled equally

Now that I am back from my honeymoon I thought I should update this!

I just went to a local second hand superstore. They have baby toys in packs really cheap. So I bought a back of giant lego, a ball with another ball inside that I will be able to put treats in, and a back of toy cars and trucks – one is actually identical to the green car I already have but a second won’t hurt.

I will be sure to share Terry and Maggie’s opinions as we trial them – along with Greebo, who I will be picking up in an hour!

So Jealous!! I wish i could give my rabbit cute boxes and bins and paper! She just wants to eat everything that she isn’t supposed too. Ugh!! She needs to learn you can chew up things without swallowing it ugg

Sorry I haven’t updated for a while, been on my honey moon. Greebo will now also be adding his opinion, but he is not bonded to the others yet so will playing by himself. He also doesn’t have much experience using toys and isn’t really sure what to do with them yet. He would like to give the digging basket 8/10 though – was fun to jump in and out of, but didn’t make enough mess.

Introducing my newest toy – the $5 tunnel. Love my local k-mart for cheap tunnels. It can be folded in a U shape and tied together to make it a bit smaller.

                                      Reviews:

Terry: 8/10. Fun to run through. Cool spots to stick your head out. Some dangly toys I can chew off later. Can’t throw it.

Maggie: 6/10. Was fun to run through. No food. Tried to nap in it but Terry keeps wanting to run and shove past. And when he does that it rolls and I can’t nap.

Greebo: 7/10. Not as fun as the Y shaped tunnel. Fun to run through when straight, don’t like the U shape. Can’t watch Terry or Maggie if I’m in it. Fun to jump over.
