How did your bunny/bunnies get their name?
This question came up in another thread today and I’ve become curious enough to start a new one to learn more.
I have Jersey, pretty much named after the confectionary Jersey Caramels (see below) because of her colouring - (also the Jersey Cow for long running cow jokes in my family) I half heartedly named her that on the short car ride home and thought I’d think of something else but the name just stuck!
It also reminds me of my Papa and Grandpa who have both past. Papa used to alway bring us Jersey Caramels and my Grandpa’s family were originally from Jersey, Channel Islands.
So what about you bun buns?
Daxter is named from the game Jack and Daxter, darren was playing it one night while i was on BB talking about getting daxter (then un-named) and i said what u playing? and i loved the name when he said it so i choose daxter
Hopscotch was because i could think of a name then darren was going through lists of just random names he could think off and he said hopscotch and i knew that was the one! I dont even know why he thought of it lol
Looker (girlbun) was named by our then-4-yr-old because she kept popping her head out of the box to look around on the car ride home. Levi (boybun) was adopted on our son’s birthday, so he named the bun after his best friend who had just moved away. (This morning, our son’s hamster died of old age. She was named after a girl he had a crush on.)
It took me 3 weeks to name Smudge! hahaha I had sooooo many names that I kept trying and NOTHING was sticking. Then my boyfriend jokingly said her fur looked like someone licked their thumb (you know like your mom did to get some food off your face when you were younger) and “smudged” all her coloring (she is a mix of white/brown/dark and light grey). I don’t know why but it just stuck and now she is known as Princess Smudgey Bunny, Smudge, or just Brat on the days we’ve had a disagreement lol.
Kay & Winston were already named when I got them. The names fit them so well that I kept them
Kay was such a little lady the shelter people thought it was a good name for her.
Winston was named after another goof ball bun that was named Winston!
peppers full name is actually Sargeant Pepper, but i just call him Pepper or Pep. My best friend named him for me because i couldnt think of something, and she decided Sargeant Pepper after the song and so she calls him Sarge or Sargeant. lol thats probably why he doesnt know his name, he gets called too many things! lol!
we got Meadow about a month after the Sopranos show ended. she was named partially for that, and partially because she was very tiny and so velvety soft and was “Meadowey”. we were called her Meadowey as a nickname, that evolved into Meadow E. (i joke that the E stand for Ellen DeGeneres b/c i love her talkshow!) Meadow E. then became Meadow E. Bunny. it gets shortened down to Mead or Baby Girl quite often.
for Max, i wanted an M name to match Meadow’s. plus my son loves the Max & Ruby cartoon (they’re bunnies if your’e not aware) and i just have always loved the name Max. Max had a great name before, but i am a big fan of people names for pets, so i decided to change it. Max is such a big softie, that within a day i was calling him Maxie… then Maxie Moo (he does resemble a cow!)
now that they are officially bonded, Meadow, being the independent bun she is, has decided to hyphenate. therefore: Meadow E. Bunny-Moo and Maxie Moo!
I might win the award for longest names….
Bun 1: Miss Ember Hops-a-lot Munchkadoodle, she came with the name Ember (she’s a dark gray lop) and I added the “Miss” title because she’s so sophisticated and prissy for a bun! The last name “Munchkadoodle” is because I used to call her a “munchkin” when I first got her and that somehow morphed into Munchkadoodle. Then she needed a middle name after I gave my second bun a middle name and “Hops-a-lot” just seemed appropriate… of course I mostly just call her either “Em” or “You little monster!” depending on whether or not she’s getting into trouble…
Bun 2: Sir Teddy Bear Toto Fluffmister, he came with the name Teddy Bear (he’s the most absurdly fluffy lionhead ever), but my friend really wanted me to call him Toto because I was getting ready to move to Kansas when I got him! So that became his middle name and I think Fluffmister came from me calling him a fluffy mister all the time… I pretty much call him either Teddy or Fluffbutt though
Rainbow bridge bun: Bob the Bunny, I got him from a breeder before I even knew such a thing as rabbit rescues existed and Bob was already his name. The breeder I got him from got him from another breeder and all she knew about him at first was that he was a Broken Opal Buck (B.O.B.). And I just loved the idea of a rabbit named “Bob the Bunny” so it stuck. He was a really tiny Holland Lop (I had trouble keeping his wt above 3 lbs) and it was just the perfect name for him. (B.O.B. also stands for Beware of Bunny which my friends thought was pretty funny…)
One of these days I’m going to post pictures of them (Em’s my avatar), I just need to get pics on my new computer!
Maryann was named by the shelter after Maryann from “Gilligan’s Island” as she was found on a beach. I guess I’m lucky as she could had been named “Ms. Howell”.
Dono was originally named “Donahue” but I didn’t like Don or Donny and wanted a 2 syllable name to make it different from Maryann. Dono just came up.
Cotton cause his fur was cottony as a baby. HE has soft adult hair now.
Ruby was named already. Since she is a REW I kept the name as I thought it was an appropriate name for her eyes. Then I added Ruby Eyed Powder Puff
Honey Bun. That was his name on his shelter card. I kept it too. He is a honey of a bun. I thought the name fit his personality.
we are all like those mad size 0 women who have chihuahuas and call them Mrs. cutey wutey princess tinkerbell gorgeous cutie pie haha
Bailey was named because he’s kind of the colouring of Bailey’s Irish Cream. Reno was already named when we adopted her and since she’d had her name for 3 years we decided to just go with it. Keiran (rainbow bridge bun) is celtic for “dark” (he was a black bunny) or “little and dark” depending on the site you find. After that we stuck with the celtic names. Aeryn (both for the celtic origin and after the character in Farscape), Tegan means beautiful, Keelie (slender and comely) and Kylie, well because it went with Keelie! lol
– Annette
Felony’s full name is Felonious Marshall Greene. I was in my first year of law school when I got him so I figured naming him Felony was a good fit. The Marshall I got from the greatest Supreme Court Justice in U.S. history… I know, I’m a dweeb
Yuuki – means ‘courage’ in Japanese; I got him at a time when I needed courage and support to get through things.
Kibou – means ‘hope’ in Japanese; along the same lines, my courage and hope.
Smile – she has a smile marking on her butt!
Rye – “Rikau” means persistence in Japanese, I believe…I was tyring to get through things…
Jazz – my mom named Jazz, Jazz’s mom’s name is Jasmine so mom was like “Name him Jazz!’ and it stuck!
Sawyer – Sawyer reminds me of Sawyer on Lost; he’s a loner and a good escape artist.
Pickle – xnovalentine named her/him!
Six – has six spots on his/her side
Watchman – is always the one awake when the rest of the babies were/are sleeping
Little White Guy – still not his official name, but… lol…he’s all white.
Charlie was a Charlie. I saw him in the pet store and was like ‘hi Charlie’ and it was never going to change after that. My boyfriend called him Mr C because he always looks so serious.
Layla was named by my boyfriend after the song by Elton John.
Wow – This is interesting reading! I’m loving some of the names ya’ll come up with.
K&D – ha ha bout those size 0 women/handbag dogs. I guess we often go all out naming our pets and spare the kids those names so they don’t get teased.
Markus – Isn’t Dono a sort of ‘Ginger’ colour? I’m thinking one day I’ll meet a bun with Gilligans personality – now that’s a good name for a bun.
Annette – I love Celtic names!
LL – still no name for Little White Guy? Maybe you need to have a competition here to name him or do you want to have dibs for that honour?
Some of the names remind me my imaginary pets names: like a black dog called Pepper, a horse called Floyd (after the band Pink Floyd) and Jersey’s BF that I saw on adopt-a-pet that has now gone
His shelter tag was 007 so he was to be Bond James Bond of course!
Originally, Mimzy had shown up at my hubby’s workplace with two REW bucks. (At first we thought there was just one as we didn’t see them come out in the open together.) So not thinking we were keeping them, I had thought I would name the brown bunny Toffee and the white bunny Marshmallow. But then when we realized there were two REW’s, (one wound up going to someone else and the other disappeared) by that time they were Wiz and Momiji, two anime character names.
(BTW, Jerseygirl, on the subject of sweets, those are exquisite looking caramels but I bet they only sell them in your part of the world, right? -hopes they import to America) xD
Anyway, I had just seen “The Last Mimzy” when we decided to trap the brown bunny and bring it home, and thinking that this was a little girl bun (imagine my shock and dismay some months later) I decided to name it Mimzy. It really stuck so I’ve never changed it. He learned it pretty quick, so I guess it really fits.
Pip was named by my daughter. I had also misgendered this one, thinking that it reminded me of BigWig from Watership Down (I had never seen a lionhead bunny before) so that’s what I had wanted to name this bun. But we found out later it was a girl, so Pip has stuck, once again a movie character, from “Enchanted.”
Oddly enough, these two names confuse everyone one the board still; it is popular thought that Mimzy is the girl and Pip the boy, so I don’t feel so bad about not being able to sex them right. xD
We hadn’t gone into Petco expecting to come out with a third bun last month, but when we heard his story we just had to help him. He was so jittery and easily startled and yet calmed and cuddled into my arms when the store clerk handed him to me, his eyes big and round like saucers…and for some reason the name Fiver just came into my head as if he placed it there himself. I don’t even remember the few names that had briefly flitted through my mind upon seeing him, and his adoption papers carried no title of any kind.
Although my son wanted to name him Shogi (for the shogi piece in Animal Crossing) due to the marking on his head-and many here on the board call him the ‘Harry Potter’ bunny-since it also looks like the lightning bolt on Harry’s forehead (rabbitpam recently titled him The Boy Who Lived, which I feel is also fitting considering his circumstances), he was intelligent enough to learn the name Fiver within a few repetitions…so Fiver he is.
I don’t know about exquisite MM! They’re cheap as chips. They have a kind of marzipan texture but better tasting. Don’t know where they originate from, just know how to devour them.
When Frankie was a baby, I told an old friend to name him. Back then we though he was a she, so my friend suggested Francesca. I shortened it to Frankie, which I thought fit him perfectly!
K&D, you just made me snort outloud over your chihuahua comment, and now my coworkers think I’m the crazy bunny-lady! (Alright, they already thought that, but still…!)

Lizzy–named by the shelter. The BF REALLY wanted me to re-name her, as he has an ex- named Liz, but I had a week between picking her out and actually getting her, and had to refer to her as SOMETHING, and it got stuck in my head. Also known as “Lizzy-Diva-Bunny,” and “Lizzy-Bits”.
Robbie–the crew boys who first spotted him in the park called him Robbie the Rabbit. And I decided I was okay with alliteration, because he’d match Lizzy the Lagomorph.
Thumper–mom-in-law named him because he thumps. I know, creative, right?
Flower–mom-in-law named her. For obvious reasons.
I don’t have any cleverly-named buns. Oh, well.

My Rainbow Bridge bunny was a gift from my brother and two nephews. (Some of you know this story.) I had spent a week trying to think up names (I knew I was getting a bunny from them) and came up with about 200 – but couldn’t decide. In the car driving home with him in a travel box on my nephew’s lap, I hear nephew say, “You can call him anything you want, but I’m calling him Spock.” After we got inside and let him run around a room with us, my other nephew (who always gently competes with his brother and vice versa) Said “I’m calling him J. S. Spock (pun on JS Bach and Star Trek character – pointed ears, right?). That was short for Johann Sebastian Spock. He was tiny and romping around, facing away from us when nephew called out “JS Spock” and he immediately turned and ran right over. We had called him other names and he hadn’t paid any attention, so it was ultimately his decision. After that I had a sing-song way of saying JS Spock and he always came right away. (Or gave me the look that said “yea, I heard you. Not now.”) As you know, he is also known as Spockie, Spockie-bunny, Whose-a-good-boy, and Bunnykins.
Kokanee was named because the first day we brougth her home, she was hopping all over and chewed on a box of empty Kokanee bottles. I had wanted something a little goofy to name her, and that seemed perfect!
Kahlua went without a name for a few weeks as we wanted the perfect name. I’d originally wanted to name my second bunny Corona to go with Kokanee, but it didn’t fit…My mom suggest Kahlua and it’s perfect, as it matched Kokanee and followed her coloring.
Rupert and Chuck came with their names, and Dave-the name police-would not let me change them…they really seem to fit them
And I’m thinking, our new rescue bunny Peter would fantastically fit in too…Peter Rupert and Chuck
Now how to get Dave to go meet Peter ?? ![]()
Pam: I am now completely convinced that Rexes/Mini-Rexes must be telepathic. I know Fiver planted his name in my head….swear to God! ^_^
K&K: Oh come now, dear, haven’t you caught your limit? ^_^ j/k
And well, now I know how Kokanee got her name, but I still have no idea….what exactly IS Kokanee? You said bottles…is it a pop or something?
It’s a canadian beer! ![]()

Kokanee beer. Sounds yummy – must try it. Will raise a glass to Kokanee.
MM, of course they are telepathic. The only time JSS wouldn’t immediately come out of his house was when it was time to get him to a vet appointment, like for a nail trim.
A psychic told me that he is going to help me find my next bunny – and he wants it to be a girl! (I told him to just go find Kokanee or Bailey now if he wants a girlfriend.)
Hm…looks tasty. Is it any good? ^_^
I VERY RARELY have a brew, but when I do it needs to be a mellow tasting one…the sharp ones are too much for me.
lolz…it’s still an adorable name. ![]()
What a great thread- I never knew that Kokanee was a Canadian beer! I named our 2nd Aussie (dog) Molson because my husband likes hockey and the beer Molson is associated with Hockey/Canada/Beer with him (even though we live in the US). If I ever bother to send in his AKC papers I know that I will not be able to have that in his registered name though. Not to side track even more- but I think that guys with Canadian accents are so totally hot- a canadian accent totally jumps their hotness score up 2-3 points alone. Add a dog or another pet and that jumps another 2-3 points. One of my favorite songs is “If I had a Million Dollars” by the BareNaked Ladies- I listen the the CD and where they talk with their yummy Canadian accents…Wow. I have never heard anyone else say they had a thing for a Canadian accent- so I guess I am in a club of one.
So anyway- how I named and got our bunny Cotton- although she is commonly called Binkers or Binks by me and Bun-Bun by my husband. I was at the petstore to buy rawhides for our dogs- and I walked down the bunny aisle. The pet store is a small local owned chain on 4 stores total and they only stock a few small animals at a time. I really wish that I had truly “rescued” a bunny. But the deal really is that I saw her and fell in love! I work at a vet clinic and I used to be a USDA licensed breeder for hamsters and gerbils and I saw bunnies at pet stores weekly, I used to work at the Humane Society and saw bunnies there too. In fact on the way to the pet store I saw a white Amercan Bulldog in someone’s truck and I told my husband “I personally don’t like all white or almost all white pets- tjhey seem to have alot of health issues especially with skin and eyes” (I was refering mainly to dogs here). If you had asked me immediately before I walked into the store that day if I would ever have a house bunny- I would have said “No, I have dogs and cats and a bunny would be too messy and too much work.”
So I was not looking for a bunny- did not want a bunny. But saw her and fell in love. There is something about her face that did me in. A store employee asked if we needed any help- so I asked what sex the bunny was- and she said female. Which was another sign to me- as for whatever reason I knew if she was female I wanted her. So then she offered that we could hold her- I held her and she snuggled into me- my husband held her and she snuggled into him. It was a done deal!
We bought all the supplies- large cage, food, water bottle, pellets, etc. Ironically enough I had to call me friend to stop by the pet store and pick up the cage (they have a SUV) as there is no way it would fit in our car and it does not break down at all.
Even though my husband while holding the bunny said “I don’t care- get her if you want her.” He said this repeatedly. I knew that he really did not want a bunny. So I surfed the net for a couple of days looking for names and came up with some- can’t remember them all- but Cotton, Tabby (Tabitha), Biscuit, etc. And then I let him pick- and he picked Cotton since at the time she was mostly white except for face, ears and tail. she has shaded and darkened over the months that we have had her. But since I picked her out (did not even look twice at the 3 other bunnies there) and I make all of the other decisions for her- pellet, hay and vegetable choices, NIC pen, when to spay, etc. I let him pick her name to have him more involved with the whole bunny thing.
Every day when I hold and “snuzzle” with her while watching TV on the couch- I kiss her face and ears and feel so darn lucky to have her. She was MEANT to be my bunny. Fate stepped in that day and whacked me with a bunny cupid arrow. I have not seen another bunny since that I HAD to have- I look on petfinder- although I am not ready for another bun- and Cotton is so dominant that maybe when she is 2 I will consider trying to bond her to a “rescued” bunny. If I am looking for a bunny- I would drive hours to get or look at an appropriate bunny. But thankfully Cotton was in my local pet store waiting for me.
Julie
Haha Katnip Crazy. You are funny. My boyf is Canadian, and I make fun of him because he spells check cheque and says aboot…
