I miss Sarita’s thread so I’m starting one for us literary geeks. ![]()
I’m reading the first Outlander novel. I bought the whole series for $1 each at a yardsale last summer. Was so excited because I was interested in reading them (and then watching the TV series) and they were so cheap and super thick. Super thick books make me excited. It will take me a long time to get through them but so far, the first one is really good. Hard to put down.
No spoilers please but if you read the books or seen the series, let me know what you think of them.
Omg!!! I discovered Outlander last year. I loooovvve them. I am super sensitive to spoilers. I am a Dragonfly in Amber (second book) virgin, because I want to find out what happens in the TV series. I’ll read the book at the end. That’s how I handled season 1.
I know a lot of people have really strong opinions and feelings about Outlander. Its such an interesting story and there is so much to talk about. I went to a forum hosted by Starz about a month ago that had the 3 main characters and the creative team and they were talking about adapting the story to TV and also the work they did creating the sets and costumes. They have done such amazing work.
What do you think of the story so far? Are you watching season 2 yet?
I’m loving the story so far. I’m about halfway done the book. Haven’t watched the show yet. I like to read the book first then watch the show. That’s what I did with Game of Thrones. Kind of the opposite of most people. I would rather read all the events in all their detail as a surprise since the show will cut out so many of the good parts.
I’ve just started on The Son by Philipp Meyer for the second time. It’s a really good book. The brutality of it all sort of shocked me the first time I read it, so it took me a long time to get through it. Now I know all the bad stuff that’s going to happen, so now I can concentrate better on the story =)
I also have a book by James Lee Burke waiting for me, Wayfaring Stranger. I love James Lee Burke.
I’m currently reading a manga series called Tsubasa: Resivoir Chronicles. It’s fascinating in the fact that the collective group who wrote it. cLAMP, always crossover characters from their other series. This one in particular is heavy with it because it runs parallel to another series, xxxHolic, which I’ve read. Both series fill in plot holes of each other. Plus, the artwork is beautiful. ![]()
I have heard of Outlander but haven’t read it yet.
Right now I’m going through: The Malazan Book of the Fallen
It’s an amazing series. It really blew my mind. First book is the slowest but totally worth the rest.
Right now I’m on a book 5. The Bonehunters. All and all it has 10 parts and best thing is that it’s a finished series.
Nothing is simple or black and white. You’ll start hating a character just to find that by the end of a book you fell in love with him/her. And other way around.
Also one of my all time favorit quotes is from this series:
“We humans do not understand compassion. In each moment of our lives, we betray it. Aye, we know of its worth, yet in knowing we then attach to it a value, we guard the giving of it, believing it must be earned. Compassion is priceless in the truest sense of the word. It must be given freely. In abundance.”
@LPT I’m that way with most books adapted to TV shows, but my old roommate discovered the show first and introduced me too it. We’re sort of partners in this Outlander journey together and I’m following her lead. She even started a blog about it and is gaining a big presence in the Outlander world. Sorry of crazy. I just enjoy the story.
And if you think Jaime is hot in the books wait until you see Sam Heughan!
Right now I’m reading My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk. He’s a Turkish writer and the story is set in 1591 Ottoman empire. So interesting.
I just finished “I was here” by Gayle Forman. Recently just read the classic “Animal Farm”. I will then be reading the sequel to a book called “Seraphina” by Rachel Heartman. IDK what it’s called though.

Currently casually reading through the second Jungle Book, I read the first one as a reminder for before seeing the new movie as a means of comparison.
Otherwise I’m not really reading anything at the moment, it’s been a while since I’ve read a good series.
I read the Outlander books – my undergrad advisor introduced me to them my last year of uni (big mistake – I was already sleep deprived). Sadly the series lost my love when Drums of Autumn came out. My love was largely based on setting as well as characters, and in this book, the setting changes dramatically.
I was, however, eagerly awaiting the TV series for years – and then when I finally watched it, it did nothing for me.
At the moment I’m rereading Island of the Blue Dolphins after having finished Tamora Pierce’s Tortall universe books (which I enjoyed very much, but then again, I love historical and fantasy novels).
Do you guys use Goodreads to keep tabs on books you’ve read or want to read? I discovered it when my editor made me add my own novel to their database and then thought to myself – how did I not know about this site? lol
Beautiful quote, Niamian
MininoJack- Yes, Jaime sounds pretty hot in the book. I’ve not seen any pics or teasers for the show so it will be a complete surprise. Love Scottish accents too.
Q8bunny- I will have to check out Goodreads. I was looking for this type of site. Often I go to a book store and actually can’t remember if I have a certain book because I have so many.
@Q8bunny you read the Allanna books! They have been my favorite since middle school and probably reread them once a year. I never got into the books about their kids though.
I’ve never spent much time using Goodreads. I didn’t see the point. Maybe I’ll give it another chance.
Q8 my sister and mother use goodreads.
MiNinoJack: Yay! Another Lioness fan!
Moxie: I’m still a Goodreads noob but enjoy it very much.
Oh ty Q8 it’s been a while now that I try to remember the name. Goodread is an awesome idea have to check in again asap.
Q8- Island of the Blue Dolphins has been one of my faves since middle school! I’m fascinated by how she survives the island. It creates such mental images. Especially using whale ribs as a fence.
I’m rereading The Book Thief (for about the seventeenth time.
) I love all books, but I can say with certainty that The Book Thief is my FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. I’m such a nerd!!
Has anyone else read any books by Rainbow Rowell? I’m in love with her writing style! I must get Landline!!
LPT : ” super thick books make me excited” !!! ROFL…. less so, super thick humans !!!!! Lol
cinnybun- I haven’t read The Book Thief but the movie was super good!
Vienna- humans are not exciting…lol….I get excited by thick books, bunnies and pretty horsies ![]()
LPT, the movie was amazing, I agree! I’m biased however because I always think books are better than movies. But the actors did portray it so well! ![]()
Vienna! ROTFL And I quite agree.
Thanks for taking up the bookmark left by Sarita!
Just about an hour ago I finished the 3rd book by Jonathan Kellerman in the Dr. Delaware mystery series. They are a bit tough (sometimes he can be gruesome) but his characters are so good that I have read most of them. I went back to the beginning, taking place in the 80s, because they are so good. Milo is his police detective and best friend of the doc, and they are psychological thrillers. Ahhh. After putting down some lousy picks, it was fun to read a page turner again.
I’m currently reading the theories of Freud, the joy of a Psych major
Captain Correlli’s Mandolin – I’ve tried (honest!) again (second time) – but I just can’t get through it.
I’m not someone who can read a book, get to the end and say “didn’t like that” – I won’t get to the end !!
I appreciate that it is good writing, and it has excellent reviews and won prizes, but I just can’t !
So, sorry, it’s going back to the charity shop where i got it about 5 years ago !! ![]()
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. Love it.

I had to read Captain Correlli’s Mandolin in High School, I could barely get through it, only reason I could was because I had to.
Azerane – phew ! You’ve made me feel much better !! WHY o why do they make us read books in high school that really don’t grab teenagers!! I’m not sure I finished ANY that I should have… It sort of puts you off reading altogether….. ![]()
The only high school book I hated was “Hamlet”. I enjoyed “Great Expectations”. And “To Kill A Mockingbird”. I think I read that one in like 3 days.
There was one book I did enjoy, but it was earlier in high school so probably why it wasn’t as bad
It was called Taronga by Victor Kelleher, but of course it had animals in it, which is probably why I remember enjoying it ![]()
Vienna – Now imagine how I feel: I’m a HS lit teacher and self professed bookworm, and I HAVE to teach certain books, including ones I myself don’t like AND ones I like but must kill by dissecting. ![]()
Well, very silly job for you then Q8 ! LOL

LOL Why do you think Chewie and I are retiring to France in the summer of 2018? I’m also a writer, but my publications don’t bring in enough to retire right now… Ho hum… ![]()
