On labor day I adopted another bunny (already have a Female holland lop). Apparently he’d been roaming this ladies apt. complex for a couple of days and she got him in an adoption program. I wasn’t looking for another bunny, but fell in love with him immediately. In any case, he’s quite the interesting little bunny as he is ridiculously fuzzy! Gotta just love it! Just for fun I was wondering if anyone on here may be able to take a stab at what kind of bunny he may be by looking at the photos attached below.
As well, I have no idea how old he is or if he is really a HE or possibly a SHE. I need to get him by the vet for a checkup to demystify these questions but I thought if someone had an idea as to what type he is I could read up about his temperment, how big he’ll get, etc.
I appreciate any input! Oh yea, his name is Andy 🙂

Lionhead!!! And based on his hair right now he’s under a year old- when lionheads mature they get shorter hair on their back. Your bunny seriously looks EXACTLY like my bunny Teddy!!! I would guess he’s between 4 and 8 months maybe??? He looks like he’s about as big as he’s going to get… I think… hard to tell from pics. I think the average weight is 3-3.5 lbs for lionheads (and he is definitely a purebred lionhead) so if you can weigh him you might get a better idea of how much growing he has left to do. My Teddy is only 2.5 lbs though and he’s a year old so he should be done growing. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a little darker as he gets older- Teddy looked just like that when he was younger and now that his mature hair had grown in he has darker coloring on his back….
Welcome
I think Bob pretty much answered your question lol but Andy’s adorable!
I wish a cute little bun bun in need of a home would hop into my house lol! (well as long as the kittens didn’t see)
Thanks for your response! When do lionheads usually start sloughing off some of the longer hair on their back? 🙁 he sits on my lap for atleast an hour everynight and helps me groom him as i brush him, i’ll miss his fuzzy baby hair!!! I actually trimmed the hair back from his eyes a little as his cheeks were SO fuzzy the hair was getting stuck to his eyes and i doubt the lil guy could see! I still can’t believe someone just set him lose! He really has the best temperment 🙂 Thanks again!
I bet your guy is always going to be really fuzzy! At least if he’s similar to Teddy (who really does appear to be his long lost twin!) But I think it’s around 6 months maybe that they go through their first big shed out??? I can’t quite remember- there’s a few other people with lionheads too, maybe they’ll know better then me! He looks like he’s a double mane (as opposed to single mane) which means that he’ll have the long hair around his head and a “dust ruffle” around the bottom Lionheads are a new breed though so it’s hard to predict! My guy actually seemed to lose his baby fuzz… but then grow in back in!!! He sadly though is rather terrified of most anything including me so I have a heck of a time picking him up to brush him! Once I manage to pick him up he settles down pretty good, but it’s so hard to chase him down that he doesn’t get brushed anywhere near as much as he should! Lionheads are supposedly more prone to teeth problems (because they’re small I think) so it’s especially important to keep up with annual vet checks to make sure his teeth aren’t getting overgrown.
That’s so sad that someone got rid of him! But at least he found a good home!
Are you going to try to bond him to your Holland Lop?
Aww, well hopefully Andy keeps his calm dimeanor, i know sometimes as they mature that changes. I’m not sure what to do as far as introducing my lop (Penelope) and Andy. I guess first I need to find out for sure that Andy is a HE and then i’ll need to either get him neutered or her spayed…then slowly see how they react to each other. Ideally, I’d love for them to end of getting to know and liking eachother because I’d love for them to have playtime together! But, I guess 1st is the sexing issue then comes the introduction… I’ve never had a boy/girl pair of any animal before so I’m in new territory!
BTW i’d LOVE to see pics of your Teddy! Could you post some ?
OMG total cutness over load. He is a doll and I think I would of took him home too hehe
What a find!! He looks purebred, double maned lionhead to me Lucky you!!! They have wonderful sweet temperments-they are easy going lap bunnies
he’s adorable! and def. a lionhead. there’s no doubt! it is very likely that your lop and him would get along with some commitment, but yes, first he’d need to be neutered (spayed?) and a health check is a great idea since you don’t know his history. i wouldn’t mind seeing some pics of Penelope too if you have any handy!
ahh! I can’t resist an opportunity to dote on my babies. Here are some pics of Penelope aka “Peneloppy” Oh yea, and the dog that’s sticking his head in the pic is my faithful adopted pound dog Reggie 🙂

she is beautiful!!! do you know what kind of lop she is? her head shape is similar to my Max, but i don’t know what he is exactly. i think a mix of some sort.
and Reggie looks like a great guy!
What an adorable lionhead! He is toooo cute
Is your female bunny spayed? Either way, until you get your new little dude to the vet for a check-up, its best to keep them very separated. You just want to make sure he doesn’t have the sneezes, or if your female isn’t spayed, that he doesn’t have a family in mind! He is really adorable, and that is just amazing that you stumbled upon a bunny that WANTS to sit in your lap. Its always odd to me how some of the friendliest of bunnies end up getting dumped I’m so glad you found him!
Cute doggie too I like how he poked his head into the photo!
Whoops – forgot to answer the actual questions! Lionheads don’t get all that big as far as I know, the ones I have seen have all been on the smaller range of the bunny size-scale. Also, as far as temperament, in general I’ve heard of them being friendly, sweet and curious bunnies.
I was told she was a Holland Lop. She’s a pretty darn sweet gal herself and smart as could be! It took literally 3 days to potty train her. As a reward we feel pretty good about letting her roam around in the evenings when the dogs are playing outside. Does anyone have a recommendation as to whether it would be best to spay my female or neuter my male or have each one fixed??? I wasn’t sure how rabbits take to anesthesia and if having the male neutered would be easier on him than a spay would be on my little girl. Thank you all for your comments on my babies, I’m glad I found this forum 🙂
Actually you should get them both done…there are tons of health reasons to do it (85% of females get cancer by age three) it drastically lenghtens life expectancy…Also it will help reduce marking/territorial and aggressive behaviors.
Rabbits don’t do as well with anestetic (sp….) then other pets but they do well. It’s important to find a good rabbit vet and do your research first.
On the whole, it would be best for them to get them both done!
I agree, getting them both done would probably be most beneficial. Have you ever read about rabbit bonding? If not, it is worth some research as it takes a little bit of work to get two bunnies to get along. I’m working on bonding a pair right now and we are about 2 weeks in. Sometimes it is love at first sight and veyr easy, and sometimes it takes more work. Having both of the bunnies fixed will make it easier on you to do the bonding.
this is a great article about spaying and neutering… http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/spay.html
do you have a rabbit vet in your area?
You definitely have a double mane lionhead. He has hair like my Ruby. They usually shed out at 4-6 months the longer it takes for them to shed out the better the mane and skirt will be as they mature. Some who shed real early don’t have a good mane or lose the whole thing like Cotton did and it didnt’ grow back like it was when he was a baby.
Now my Ruby is 5 months and has not shed out yet. The overall hair is 3 inches. Or was til I trimmed her. Got tired of the cottony hair tangling up when the adult hair comes in the grooming will be a lot easier.
Thats a nice lionhead you got. A very good representative of the breed as far as mane goes.
The size is about 3 1/3 lbs at the most. So he will stay a cute little fuzzball.
Congrats to you and your bunny. He looks happy to be in a loving home. I wonder if he got out. And no one bothered to look for him.
Lionheads are my fav breed next to english angora’s which I have never had. So I do a lot of research and have a friend who breeds them. She cares for them very well too. She doesnt’ over breed them.
So with your little lionhead darling you are in luck. Well he is too.
Upon closer inspection he looks like a single mane. HIs coloring is a black tort.
Beka27- I’m not sure who exactly to take my bunnies to for their surgery. I have a very good relationship with a vet who has cared for all my critters for a few years but I’m not sure that he’s actually performed a neuter or spay on a rabbit before. His kids raise & show rabbits but I believe i discussed him spaying Penelope before and I think he had said he would do it but never had before… I guess even though I fully trust him, that makes me a little uneasy with my babes. So…I guess I’ll just call around…I just don’t really know where to start and I feel kinda bad explaining to him why I took them somewhere else for their surgeries…but I guess I could get over that. What’s important is what is best for the bunnies!
the most important thing is to find an experienced rabbit vet. just b/c a vet will see rabbits, that does not mean they are rabbit savvy. if you can tell us where you are we can help you find a good vet near you. if you don’t want to post onboard your location, email me or any of the other CL’s and we can help provide you with some names. it is up to you to call around and speak to them yourself. you can also do a search for exotic vets in your area. or check out the HRS vet page.
Yay for lionhead’s! My female lionhead lost a lot of her fuzzball-ness around 7 months. She used to be even fuzzier than Andy looks– she was literally a sphere of fur (see pic <–). Congratulations on your new lovebug!
bunnytowne- How do you tell the difference between a double or single maned lionhead? Wow, so if he hasn’t shed his hair out yet then he must be really young!
I guess he could have possibly slipped out of someone’s house and then they didn’t look for him…The lady who took him to the adoption program said that she saw him roaming around her apt complex for about 3 days then finally picked him up to take him in. Part of me wonders if he wasn’t her rabbit and she was surrendering him because she didn’t want to take care of him anymore?!?
a double mane has hair sticking up in a v shape to the shoulders. He has long hair but it doens’t stick up like that. Just around his head like tween ears and the like. So I think is a single mane. But he sure looks good. Some don’t shed til 6 months thereabouts. So he is under 6 mos.
Yeah that sounds weird no one would be looking for him. Glad she took him in. I couldn’t have waited 3 days to do it tho.
Yeah it can be tricky to tell sometimes. Both single and double manes have skirts in the back.
Yeah, I’ll post a pic of Teddy as soon as I get home this weekend from a business trip. Teddy will be 1 yr old on Wednesday so I’ll have some good 1 yr lionhead examples to show! (I’m kinda sad that I missing his b-day!!)
awww. He’s probably sad you’re missing it too! hehe Can’t wait to see pics of Andy’s long lost cousin!!!
You guys now have me browsing rabbit breeds online and I was wondering….What’s the difference between a baby lionhead and a jersey wooly??
