All I know about Comet is that he is a lop but I don’t know if he is a holland lop or a mini lop.  The shelter he was at told me he was 5lbs but he sure doesn’t feel like 5lbs when I pick him up, feels lighter to me.  How can I find out what type of lop he is or is it really just the same thing anyway????  Thx.

I think it depends on the size of the lop. I think generally the Holland is 3 to 4 pounds and then there is the mini-lop but I’m not sure what exactly what weight these rabbits go to – I guess between 5 to 8 pounds. I’m not certain there are really any other characteristics to tell Hollands from Mini to French – I do know the French lops are the largest. So Comet could be either a Holland or Mini.. The English Lops have the extra long silky ears.

Minilops tend to be in the 5-7 lb range.  But Comet is probably some kind of lop-mix (aka – north american mutt-bunny)

Do you have a scale you can weight him on? Or a scale where you can weigh yourself with and without him in your arms and the difference is his weight? If he is having trouble with his picky eating, he may have lost some weight since you brought him home.

The only difference i can tell just by looking at Pudge(mini) and Delilah (holland) or Leila (holland) Is that the hollands seem to have a “flatter” face and very fine, silky fur. Of course there is also the weight difference.

                Pic #1 is holland lop

                Pic #2 is mini lop

I have a Mini-Lop and a Holland Lop and they are completely different in looks… My Holland lop does have the flatter face and the Mini has a bit more of a long face… Comet looks to me to be a Holland because He looks just like my Hollan Lop! He’s Beautiful!

Hollands are known as the “Bulldog’ of bunnies-not for personality but for shape. They are compact shaped, even if they are larger. From what I can tell their is a very distinctive face difference. Hollands have a more solid looking face, whereas minilops have a longer face. The breeder I know said you can really tell them apart by shape-and said that many lops are labelled ‘mini’ just so they sell in the petstore (we had two come to our shelter as minilops but they are definitely holland lops!)

                      Here’s pics of minilops

                        mini

                        holland

                        (from K&K’s link…)

from what i have seen, i think some of the hollands seem to have broader ears, whereas the mini lop ears are skinnier thru the middle…

really, chances are good that most of our lops are not 100% purebred either way…

I’ve had both Mini and Holland Lops. The Holland Lops have the shorter ears of the two.
