I was just in the “toy test” section of this site and was happy to make the jellyfish…great idea! Baxter is very interested so far. That idea was posted over 2 years ago though. I am working on some ideas and I am curious to see others as well. Pics would be great! Maybe we could update that section!

petzy had a toy test contest a while ago but we never finished it. we should try again!

something i did was stuff this ball with hay and my bunnies love rolling it and eating the hay. and before i put hay in it they totally ignored it. but you would have to get the ball so its not really homemade.

I will post the picture in my next post.

Zeus’s favorite “toy” is my recycling bin.  He goes running across the living room, does a swan dive into it like a kid jumping into a pile of leaves, and then just starts digging and shredding everything in sight.  It’s hilarious.. and cheap!

It’s not really something I “made”, but it’s their favorite toy of all time so I have to add it – a long skinny box! DH got a lobster spear (for our Bahamas trip; it’s exactly what it sounds like) and it came in a long narrow box, about 5″ square and 3′ long. The bunnies adore it! We opened one end and they run in and dig at the closed end like it’s a burrow. The funniest thing is that Otto will go in first, Hannah will follow, then Otto will come back out – I have no idea how they squeeze around each other in a space about the size of Hannah’s bum.

We keep turning it around so they’re digging at a different spot, but eventually we’ll need another one. Then we’ll have to figure out where to order 36″x5″x5″ boxes from. Haha

I was actually going to post about a new hidey house/diggy box I made/bought for Sammy this weekend, so I’ll just post about it here

I was at Target and saw these plastic bins with a lower front meant for children’s rooms, and I thought they were the perfect size and had the right size ‘entrance’ to make a good hidey house for rabbits…

Sammy loves to dig in towels, so I bought him two towels on clearance, one to put on top of the house and one inside… Here are pics. I ended up moving the house to another area of my living room because it’s where his cardboard houses are too.

He’s been spending a lot of time in it and on top of it, so … success! LOL

The back of the house (against the fireplace) also had medium sized round holes in it, so it makes it more airy.

All the paper lining the walls is because he’s still chewing a little… it’s actually decreasing though compared to before his neuter.

I think he’s trying to make his escape… lol

This is where the house is now…

Otti that is a great idea! I bet the chewing will subside. Baxter did it badly until almost 2 months after he was neutered. Now he doesn’t chew much unless it is a basket, cardboard or wood. I wish he could have a diggy box I’ve tried everything.

                            My buns’ favorite toy is………….

An empty toilet paper roll with hay stuffed in it. They love to gnaw and fling it. Easiest toy ever!

Baxter loves diggy boxes but he starts peeing in it. I’ve tried a cardboard box with shredded paper. He played in it for a while then peed everywhere in it. Then I tried using towels in a tote for him to dig in and he enjoyed peeing on that even more. He is so difficult when it comes to toys. He likes to peel cardboard boxes so I thought that since he likes to dig and doesn’t pee in his hay than I could use hay for him to eat and dig in. He poops in that. UGH. He is difficult. He would love a maze haven. With his weight and the fact that he is still growing I think it would be too small for him. I am really thinking about what I can make for him. I made him a big hidey hut but I realized I used way too much material than needed so I took it apart and now I am thinking about what I can make that he would really enjoy. I am thinking about a cool rabbit house of some kind. Baxter is the type of bun that needs a lot of stimulation or he just seems so bored. He is always wandering looking for something to do. Maybe he is like me and has ADD. lol

I feel bad because Bun-Bun does not like any toys (thankfully I didn’t spend any money on them.) He doesn’t even chew cardboard. He likes digging in his box full of papers (I throw hay and some pellets in there to make him go nuts.) But eventually he always pees in it like Nibbles mentioned above. He doesn’t have access to the box all the time so I let it dry out and use one until it’s too trashed. I recently gave him some old t-shirts because he likes digging and rearranging fabric… but for some reason the t-shirts were a trigger not just to mark them, but to saturate them completely in urine! Not good. I agree bunny poo is no big deal, but clothing soaked with urine ends up stinking… so those went out

Hugo doesn’t really play with anything either. I haven’t found anything for him. If he get a hold of paper he doesn’t shred, he eats. The whole piece! It’s like a treat to him. He never digs at anything but he tries to straighten the blanket on my bed when he lays with me. He doesn’t ever chew on his cardboard boxes, just marks them with his chin. He doesn’t even go into his hidey houses very much. He LOVES to jump though. He’s always on the couch or the bed. Any thoughts on what I can try? And hay does not entice him either.

Amy&Hugo – you live in Appleton! I went to Lawrence University, so I lived there for 4 years, funny. If your bunny likes jumping, have you guys tried cat toys that you dangle above his head (you can make one out of cardboard scraps and string.) My bunny goes nuts when something’s hovering above him and tries to grab it away.

Bun-Bun also loves to be chased, and tosses his head back and forth when I chase him, then lets me catch him… it’s sooooo cute. I realized that he may do the head-tossing because he can’t binky when he runs (wood floors.) I’m actually getting an area rug for one living room this weekend JUST for the bunny to binky on! I didn’t want carpet (figure my cats will scratch it, plus it traps allergens.) But I want the bunny to play on it… can’t believe I’m doing this for him! Ha ha.

Hugo doesn’t like to jump at things and I think he’d run away if I tried that. He loves to jump up on thing! lol. Our new house will have stairs. Maybe that will be a good toy for him. =)

Yeah I bet your bunny will love the stairs! Mine loves running up the stairs and binkying on the carpet at my parents’ house. I think bunnies that don’t play with toys still have fun. I noticed if I move things around the house the bunny gets excited and has to investigate, even little things like my computer case, books, my purse, chairs, etc. He has to run around smelling everything and figuring out where it is.

Bun-Bun basically lives to eat and sleep… my favorite hobbies as well, we’re a good pair LOL.

                                              Nibbles,

Just catching up on this thread now, but I have an idea for you. What if you start with a big litter pan, put a screen like the ones BB sells on top of it, with litter in the pan, then shred the diggy stuff on top of the screen? That way, if he pees, it might seep right down into the litter and not mess up the diggy paper, or if it does, just scoop out that part, pop it under the screen, and shred some more. If it’s always fresh paper, maybe he won’t think it’s a pee place.

Yeah, I think that’s another way to do it – either way, you have to clean up the pee-soaked cardboard sooner or later. I just use a box full of hay and stuff, when he pees on it (inevitably) I put it on the porch to dry out, I can reuse it the next day when it’s dried, and only when it’s disintegrated I toss it out. A sturdy box will last a long time, I’ve had him playing in the same box every day for over a week now. No point in getting nice clean boxes and spending money when you know he’s just going to piddle all over it! Bunnies who like to pee on stuff will pee no matter what… that’s the moral of the story, LOL.

That’s a good idea! I’ll shove some balled up pieces of phonebook down there and see if they like it. Hannah’s already put a hole in one of the walls so I’m wondering how long this box is going to last. I need to figure out how to block off the end so they start digging in another spot.
