So it’s almost that time! I’m getting my dirt ready and watering every day, and I know it’s time to start planting next month ! I was wondering what vegetables and or herbs I should grow for my bunnies ? I have carrots, parsley , and am planning on getting romaine lettuce . What else could I plant ?

I’m growing basil inside for my bun right now. You could also try mint and bell peppers

Bunnies absolutely love everything you mentioned. The carrot tops are great for them, and the buns seem to prefer them to the carrot (at least mine do). They like celery, too, but idk how hard that is to grow. Don’t forget the weeds: clover (both red and white), dandelion greens, and wild strawberry plants are great.

My rabbit loves roses, both the flowers and the leaves. And as a bonus, I dumb her litterbox into the rose bushes, which makes them happy too!

This is technically a weed, but if I go out and pick dandelion greens (and wash them) my bun gobbles them up! They are what I use to lure him in to his pet carrier! you might not want to plant them, because they can quically take over a yard, but buns love ’em!

Dill, cilantro, rosemary, sage, oregano. My bun goes crazy for these herbs.

You can get seeds for Italian dandelion greens. The greens can be hard to find in stores. They are also rather quick to go bad if you can find them in stores, so it would be great if you could grow those.

I know of 2 online sites that have seeds. I’ve bought them from Johnny’s Seeds in the past.

Although herbs are great, they take a while to establish (and depending where you are) often dont thrive as well as they might as they are generally from tropical countries.
While a tasty treat, if you are growing greens to feed its generally a good idea to look for ‘heavy duty’ plants.

Weeds and invasive growing plants are great for rabbits as they are persistant and hardy enough to keep growing even after bunnies get a good chew on them.

This includes bramble type plants like rasbperry and blackberry bushes which do very well, as they grow rapidly, need very little care, and are persistant in growth, and will regenerate very well.

Nasturtium is a fantastic flowering plant that I personally think is beautiful and versatile – it can be grown potted, trained to climb, put in a hanging basket or grown as a bush. It grows quickly and it is all edible(to humans too!)
However it will take over a garden if not managed.
Some nice flowers to grow as window are sunflowers, primrose and marigolds – they all have edible petals.

Common weeds make really really popular food for rabbits, I recommend having a wildflower section, these are very low maintanence so you wont need to do much work to keep them alive and will offer food for your local pollinating species:
Dandelions, cornflower, Heather, plantain (especially popular in my house), pansies, hollyhock etc.

I think I made a list somewhere thats more comprehensive with species , I must have a look for it!

Thank you so much for all the ideas! I have most of these seeds and plan on getting more

I have hollyhock seeds too! And did you say a corn flower like a corn plant ? weeks ago I had a beautiful (had…..) corn plant , and I woke up the next morning to find my rabbit in the pot and the plant gone ! I was so scared for a while, but that’s a good idea haha they obviously like the corn plant, if it’s the same thing

Cornflowers are blue flowers that often grow wild in ditches etc, at least in Northern Europe. Very pretty flowers but not related to the corn plant (maize). I bet your bun liked the corn plant though, it was probably young and tender. When corn is fully grown its suitable for cattle to eat (the whole plant) but not recommended for rabbits, there is a risk of GI obstruction. Here’s some info on the blue cornflowers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centaurea_cyanus

Chicory also has pretty blue flowers and buns like to eat the leaves. It’s very bitter, buns seem to like bitter-tasting plants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicory

I’ve grown fennel these last couple of years, they never make bulbs but they give lots of dill-like greens that buns go crazy for.

Unfortunately yes they have been into plenty of my house plants and I’m not sure how they didn’t get sick! But those all sound like good ideas, it’s still frosting where I am but soon enough I’ll plant everything

For some reason, buns tend to tolerate the house plants they manage to get their paws on surprisingly well. We have had examples here of buns nibbling plants that would have a dog or cat foaming at the mouth without any I’ll effects. A young sapling corn plant wouldn’t harm a bun, its the very thought fibers that develop much later in the plant’s life that could potentially cause issues. Your poor corn plant never got the chance to become old and stringy, of course.

It’s still frosty here as well , but February is a good month to start planning a bunny garden ??

Cant wait for the frost to give off so the bunny planting can begin! I had an early seed set out and the snow ruined them. Live and learn I guess.
Bam- my plans for the garden never stay the same for long… And are in direct contrast to the garden my boyfriend wants… I think there will have to be some compromises on my side, and a lot on his! ? February is very much my month of finishing plans

Yeah I’ve had ripped from me a spider plant, numerous succulents, draceanas, and then the corn plant which is a draceana too . I’ve realized one or the other , houseplants or bunnies ??
