Hi all i have had my bunnies for a month now they are reaching 13 week old, they currently have unlimited access to timothy hay and 2 small handfuls of burgees excel nuggets per day. Last week i started them on a small serving of little gem lettuce i gradually give them more through out the week and they seem to be fine no runny poo. I was just wondering what the next step would be?

Hi and congrats on your bunnies!

Gem lettuce is a good starter veg. Other types of lettuce are good too, although it’s probably best to avoid iceberg because of it’s bad reputation. Romaine lettuce, endive, leafy red and green lettuce, chicory, oak leaf, also lettuce-like vegs like rocket, pak choi or chard can be given. Start with a small amount, feed for 1-2 days, if you see no adverse effects poop-wise, continue with a slightly bigger serving or add another veg.

Hay is still the most important food, so you never want to give so much greens that the buns stop eating hay.

That is so great! The more hay a bun eats, the more tolerant of other food its tummy gets! And it’s really great of you to lay down good hay-eating habits for them early in their lives. Their tummies and teeth will thank you! 😃

Another thing you can start adding to their diet now is fresh herbs. This time of year,if you are in the northern hemisphere, you can grow some herbs for them yourself, which can be fun. Basil, cilantro and mint are easy to grow. Parsley is often a big favourite, too. And dill.
