Hello! It’s been a while, but I had a question. So I’ve never fostered a baby rabbit, so I just wanted to make sure that that I’ll care for a pair of 1 month old rabbits correctly.

so basically, the shelter recently received seven, 1 month old rabbits and I’m going to foster two of them. They are already weaned so do I just feed them pellets and hay? I read online 1/4th cup of pellets for baby rabbits? I also read that you shouldn’t feed them vegetables yet. Is that correct? Different websites we’re giving me different information.

        thank you so much!

Do NOT feed them veggies yet– correct; their GI system is way too underdeveloped to handle them. You can start slowly introducing veggies at 12 weeks old, one-by-one in small amounts.

Since they are already weaned, yes you can feed them hay and pellets. Being young, they should ideally be on alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets, both “unlimited”. Unlimited is accurate for alfalfa hay, and for “unlimited” pellets, it’s a generous amount, but you don’t want a huge dish of pellets just sitting there which deters them from eating their hay. I would say present a 1/4c in the morning, and if they are emptied out by the evening, provide another 1/4c. Depending on the genetically-programmed size these rabbits are going to be, you may need to up the pellets if they are really scarfing them down and don’t seem to be gaining weight at the rate matching their growth.

I’ll just add you can also give unlimited timothy hay at this point, so offer both timothy and alfalfa hay 24/7.

Ok, thank you so much! I’ve been giving them unlimited Timothy and alfalfa hay and young rabbit pellets.

Here’s just a cute picture. They don’t have names yet… any suggestions?

You can start a separate naming topic, if you’d like so others can contribute knowing based on the topic name what you’re looking for!

Please note that you should anticipate on separating and housing these rabbits separate from each other in the near future, not only to prevent accidental pregnancy, but also to eliminate the risk that they may suddenly start fighting with each other. As babies. they form a “baby bond”, which is a seemingly loving. lasting relationship that is facilitated by lack of hormones; however, the baby bond dissolves quickly and sometimes extremely suddenly once one of the rabbits begins experiencing puberty and has territorial/mating urges. Unfortunately, this has led to many situations where owners report their rabbit’s cuddling in the morning and then injuring each other that night with how quickly hormones can change the dynamic.

For more information on baby bonds vs. the true bond (i.e., between two adult, fixed rabbits), see here: https://rabbitsindoors.weebly.com/bonding-bunnies.html

Adorable! For reference, they should be separated at 12 weeks. For now it’s good they are together since they are so young. 🙂

I recently had a convo with my husband that we thought it would be cute to name a group of buns after apple varieties!

So many good ones: Crispin, Fuji, Gala, Macintosh, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, LOL!

Another idea we had was mushroom varieties: Porcini, Shitake, Button, Oyster, Portabella, Chantrelle, Morelle, etc.!
