what to do when you don’t have air conditioning?

well were here! ( at our other house) and it is HOT! we  have no air conditioning and during the day the house gets so hot it is cooler out side so i put the buns out there but they are still hot! they are in side now though sense it has cooled down cuz it is evening, and they are in a xpen with a kennel tray with four ciramic tiles and two ice blocks and still breathing pretty hard! i have no idea on when else to do! and ideas on what to do would be great! oh yeah it was about 85 F. in the house and about 84 F, out side but they were in the shade and there was a nice breeze!

another thing. around were there pen was, there was a dead mouse or somthing and we through it in the woods but i was wonder in if they could cach any diseases from it? I do not know of a vet that is close are vet is about two hours away!

so any cooling tips and tips about the dead mouse thing would be great!

if there is a nice breeze, I’d dampen a towel and hang it over the side of the pen, the air moving through the damp towel will get cooled a bit. and with it being nice and open, the air wont get too muggy and heavy.

If you got rid of the mouse and theres no flies or other icky bugs hanging around the bunnies, they should be ok.

I’d also start looking for a vet in that area, as you said you’d be moving there eventually anyway. Best to know where one is in advance just in case

would the towel thing work in the house to?
I am going to try to look for a vet but the thing is i don’t know much towns around here so i wont know if they are close. i guess i could look them up on google maps but the internet here is dial up and it is so slow!

I wouldn’t worry about a dead mouse.  I’d worry more about fleas and flystrike.

The dead mouse either indicated a predator in the area, cat, etc.  So that is something you should be hypervigilant about.  Or it could have died from poisoning- which is also something to check out.  Mouse/rat poison is usually flavored to make it enticing to eat- and bunnies could eat some if they got to it.  Do you know if there is any poison set out at that house?

If you can get a cheap table fan to blow ABOVE their heads in the room, not directly on them, it will circulate the air inside. If you have a cool tiled shady spot inside it might even be cooler once cooled off than being outside with all its risks.

Put empty soda bottles filled with water in the freezer, then lay them inside the pen. They can lie next to it or lick off the condensation. Try to remove the labels if you can so they don’t chew on them.

Definitely check out BB’s info. on the subject. My favorite for a quick cool down is the turban. You moisten a washcloth with cold water, wring it out, then wrap it around their ears. The cool cloth touching the inside/outside of the ears cools them and makes their bodies cool down. If it feels good they won’t shake it off for several minutes at least. Same effect as when you apply one to the back of your own neck when hot.

I would say the damp towel on the side is fine inside as well. Might try a sheet which is thinner and cooler. Block out the sun with blinds and keep the room dark, too.

KC: oh no no a week ago we had three of our cats up here that were killing about two things a day and i am almost 100% sure it was them because it was NOT a fresh kill it was stiff eww.

i am doing every thing that the BB thing says except the wet sheet thing ( witch i think i am going to go do) and the ice cubes ( i might do that to)!

it is way cooler outside the air in the trailer is extremely stuffy and hot! we don’t open any windows because we don’t want it to get hot in there. it is miserably hot in there! it is really cool in the shade outside with the breeze on them. and there pen is right next to the house so i am sure nothing would be brave enough to get them and the longest i left them alone was an hour and my mom was checking on them. and we have a cat that sticks around the house to protect them! they aren’t going to be able to stay out long today because there are going to be thunder storms after lunch.

Hi Mocha200, ice cubes, ice filled soda bottles, fans, they are all excellent suggestions. Be careful that the bunnies have a roof on their xpen if they are outside because it’s not just ground predators you have to worry about, but hawks, etc. Scary!

If you’re looking for a vet closer by try asking your existing vet for any recommendations close to your house that you can use in the event of an emergency. They should be able to provide you with someone.
