Hello We are new to rabbits.  We recieved a female a few days ago that is pregnant.  Shold i bring her inside to have young until they are a few weeks old?  We live in Southern Il with lows typically in the 20s and highs in the 40s this time of year.  What type of temporary set up could I use?

        Thanks

        Jim

          Hi and Welcome to Binkybunny.

I would suggest bringing bunny in the house for her entire life

A good set up would be with an exercise pen, or a cage made of nic grids.
          Here are some examples:

I would highly suggest finding a rabbit savvy vet in your area and taking her in for a check up. If she does have kits/or not, getting her spayed would be higly adviseable. How old is she?

Keep us updated and we will do our best to help you with this!

            Welcome Jim.

Absolutely bring her in.  Have you got a small area you could house her, like a porch or laundry?  Provide hay and give her a litterbox. She might not be trained to use it but rabbits naturally chose one spot to toilet. So providing one (just newspaper with hay on top to start with) and adding some of her droppings should help her identify it as the toileting area.  Pregnant and feeding mothers should have unlimited supply of good pellets & hay.  You can offer a bowl of water if more convenient inside. Many rabbits prefer drinking from a bowl.

This is some info from House Rabbit Society on mothers and baby rabbits.  It includes how to create a nest if the mother needs help.

            I hope that helps.

How do you know the female is pregnant, is she close to delivering (pulling fur, preparing a nest?) Is she the only rabbit you have or is the father still will her?

                Welcome!

Inside is better then best-bring her in

I’d make a nesting box out of a low cardboard box (at least twice as large as her and maybe 3 or so inches high) for her to have her babies in. Make sure the cage is not wire bottom and has high sides…the little babies can crawl off and get chilled and die. Make sure dad is away, a stressed bunny can have trouble and her babies can die. Ensure her food is unlimited and feed alfalfa pellets and hay if possible. SHe’ll need double the water at least. Keep her warm and undistrubed-just check twice daily when you’re feeding and watering. A quiet bedroom is great.
