Hi All, I am planning to buy a carrier for BunBun. I was given 1 several months ago when we were planning to try to get her to see the vet when she decided to nibble a toxic plant (Thanks Mom, aka, me, for leaving It there for me to nibble ?)… The moment I saw how small the cat carrier was, I knew instantly I was up for a struggle because it looked kind of small. Long story, short, she ran me into the ground and showed me she wasn’t getting in that thing! The good thing she also showed me was that even hours after eating the tiny bit she did get to, she was feeling more than well enough to run me down and give quite a bit of feist. Needless to say, she didn’t go to the vet that night, I called animal poison control and stayed up most of the night and she was fine.

Back to the carrier, though. I have been saving up money for some solid investment Bunny supplies and a carrier is on the list, especially if she continues to give me quite the issue with cutting her nails. I have looked for advice on websites and sort of get mixed views on what size to not get. Some say don’t get something that has plenty of extra space and others say the extra space is good for other supplies and things needed during travel. BunBun is a Californian although I often wonder if she was the runt because even at a year and a half old, she is still just about 6 pounds… and she is definitely not as hefty as most Calis (females) appear to be… they can average 10-12lbs. What size carrier do you all feel would be about rt for her?

Personally I got a carrier that’s just enough for Kurotta to lounge if he wanted to (he rarely does though). The pet store only had a top loading one for that size so that’s what I got. He doesn’t have any problems getting into it as long as there are pellets inside lol – in fact he would gladly hop into it.

I line the carrier with a pee pad and put some hay on one side of it. Travel supplies are kept in a separate bag. I would prefer a carrier that’s closer to the bunny’s own size as I realised that Kurotta wobbles at even the slightest jerk, so I can’t imagine how he would handle an emergency brake or sudden acceleration. He’s small at <1kg though.

Similar to kurottabun, my own carrier for Toki is just enough for lounging. He is a nervous bun when we are travelling, so he doesn’t spread out at all, he just pulls in all his limbs and waits for it to be over. My only regret with my carrier is that it is fabric and needs to be scrubbed after being peed on. Going back now, I would get a hard plastic carrier (even though I have never trusted a plastic one to stay in one piece, but I would just get some safety straps to secure the carrier for peace of mind).

The other thing I would say is that, when you are at the vets, your vet may have to reach into the carrier with both arms to bring bunbun out. This is what they have to do with Toki, and sometimes the opening of the carrier is a tight squeeze for that. Looking back I would definitely get a carrier with a slightly bigger entrance, which could mean a bigger size in general.

Probably not very helpful input from me, but I hope you manage to find a suitable carrier!

Yes mine is hard plastic and it’s definitely easier to clean. Even with the pee pad, sometimes pee manages to escape and I just wipe it up easily and wash the carrier after. Top load ones are great since it’s easier for the vet to reach in and just take the bunny out, but it’s harder to lure the bun in compared to a side entrance.

Very cool, thank you all for your answers… the one I was given has a door on top and on the side… this is what I feel I would get again… just maybe the next size up. It’s a hard plastic type which she can’t chew straight thru… at least not quickly… but I think I will start trying to get her acquainted with this one first and see if she is fine with it.. or if she is just too cramped up. Yeah, I’m pretty sure she will just ball herself into the corner of it if and when it comes time for transport… as that is how she was when she was brought to me… curled into a snow ball with brown nose and ears! Fell in love in a seconds worth of a glance
