My rescue bunny, Bella, has been seen by 2 very qualified Exotics Vets.. and she has been cleared for any risk to other rabbits and/or the “kids” I have in my own home/rescue (including my 2 Chinchilla girls). I assumed that this was enough and she is not under strictest quarantine. She’s been in the same airspace as my Cavy and Chin’girls …she’s even been in the same room, briefly, as all of them.

When I asked my Vet …and the director at the bunny rescue she’s from.. I was told she poses no threat to my personal animals. She also saw their Vet ..and was allowed into the general population of the rescue bunnies. But recently, a particular “busy body” type has instilled fear and suggested that Pasteurella cannot be detected with most tests ..and it is in fact something that can be passed onto my Chins.

What do you think? You all have more bunny experience than the “busy body” type, I’m assuming. I’d like to hear your 2 cents… please…

I am not sure if chins get pastuerella even.     There are test for pasturella and e cuniculi.    I think it is called a culture.   IF you are really worried you could ask for a culture but normally unless bunny is showing symptoms it wouldn’t do anygood.   I dont’ think she would be treated if she isn’t showing symptoms anyways.,

OH and stress lots of stress can bring on a latent pastuerella or e cunniculi.   I believe you adopted your bunny  and she would have had a lot of stress where she was so if she had it it would have likely showed up by now.

I used to subscribe to a group about rabbit health     Gosh after reading all that I thought rabbits were so delicate any germ from outside would make it sick or kill it that there were parasites everywhere waiting to invade my bunnies

I stay away from there now.   I was more scared for my bun than reassured.   lol.  I remember thinking if they are that delicate how have they survived for so long.   So I stay far far away from worry causing stuff.

I have had mine 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 years and they seem just fine.

Chances are you have a very healthy rabbit.  Even your vet said so.  They are quite healthy for the most part,.

The culture was done for Pasteurella ..and yep, Chinchillas are susceptible… but Bella does not present with it. I wasn’t even concerned about it, since she was permitted to go into the gen’pop of the bunny rescue ..where there are plenty of other buns and pigs (no chins, but a few rats and hams) that she would be a risk to. So yeah.. I wasn’t concerned until the “busy body person” said tests don’t pick up on Pasteurella.

I think I’m going to relax and trust my Vet.. he’s been my Exotics Vet for 10+ years ..and a Vet period, for 30+ …he’s qualified, in my eyes.

              Thanks for the info!

I’d take your experienced vet’s opinion over a busy-body’s anyday

Was it that the person was thinking that the new bun could be a carrier of something that would not show up? I guess there’s always a risk anytime a new animal is brought into the house, but it sounds like you’re very cautious and you have an excellent, savvy vet… I think you’re in good hands. ;o)

It is possible that the other person “thought Bella may be a carrier” ..but I would think that a large, full to capacity, rabbit rescue (the director and their Vet) ..would be more concerned before bringing her into the general population and setting her up in a cage.. right on display. They have more at risk than my two Chinchillas.. in spite of knowing how much I love my girls.

I am analyzing this too much.. making it worse, of course… so I am going to trust my Vet.

I usually do a long term (longer than recommended) quarantine in separate air space (a friend’s house), but Bella needed me round the clock those first few days.. and I skipped that step. I brought her into my home (different room) and pretty much relaxed all strict quarantine, when the two professionals gave me the “okay”.

Yeah.. like I said, I’m putting too much on this. My Chin’kids are goofy as ever ..healthy little “horses” ..and Bella is getting fat and really sassy about taking her meds. LOL

Thanks again, everyone! I appreciate it very much. It’s nice to come to a forum where people know their stuff and they don’t jump up and down and scream at the nOoB with the questions. Thanks!

No jumping up and down and screaming here except when we see cute photos.
