That young, I would offer alfalfa pellets. Sometime wiithin the next 2-4 months you could start switching over to timothy-based pellets. You can give timothy hay right now, but you may want to give some handfuls of alfalfa hay also.

Any suggestions as to brands or what percentage of protein to get?

Oxbow makes great pelleted food. They have Bunny Basics 15/23 which is alfalfa-based for young bunnies. They have Bunny Basics T (“T” for Timothy-based) for adult bunnies.  Other brands that are commonly used in the U.S. are American Pet Diner and Zupreem.  Kaytee makes one pellet that meets most of the requirements but I never remember which one it is, I think it’s “Rainbow” something or other?

Let me go get the specifics… I’ll add on to this.

From the BB diet page https://www.binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/Diet/tabid/60/Default.aspx

These are the nutritional requirements you want to look for (in regards to an adult bunny):

Recommended Nutrional Value: (Compare these against yours)

                • Fiber 18% minimum (20 -25% best)
                • Fat 1 – 2% max,
                • Protein 12 – 14% max (long-haired breeds,angoras, need higher)
                • Calcium 1% max

This is what HRS says regarding feeding baby buns rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html#babies

What quantities of food should I feed babies and “teenagers”?

                • Birth to 3 weeks–mother’s milk
                • 3 to 4 weeks–mother’s milk, nibbles of alfalfa and pellets
                • 4 to 7 weeks–mother’s milk, access to alfalfa and pellets
                • 7 weeks to 7 months–unlimited pellets, unlimited hay (plus see 12 weeks below)
                • 12 weeks–introduce vegetables (one at a time, quantities under 1/2 oz.)

There’s a site somewhere that has all of the nutritional facts for all the popular brands, but I don’t have the page saved, so I’ll let someone else post that link for you.

One thing to possibly consider once you have narrowed it down to a few brands is availability in your area.  When I was deciding I factored in what I could get locally or at least shipped for a decent price.  That way in case something happens (like the dog eating the whole bag, or the bag getting wet) you can get more pellets ASAP.

I had the main choices of Oxbow, Zupreem (which is an adult formulation) and Kaytee-  I looked at the ingredients not just the numbers and did not like the preservative in the Kaytee pellets (I also own birds and I know this has been removed from many bird diets at the demand of owners) and Zupreem had some ingredients that seemed odd to me- corn and lettuce (not specifying which lettuce).  So since I can buy Oxbow locally and online from places I do regularly order from I choose Oxbow.  Plus I emailed all 3 companies to ask a question- Kaytee did not reply, Zupreem sent me a link to the exact info I had a question about (duh?- no further explanation), but Oxbow answered quickly and professionally and they understood what I was asking.

There are other great foods out there- American Pet Diner and SweetMeadow is supposed to be good also- where I am in Michigan NO ONE sells them and shipping is pretty pricey.

Your location in the US can make a difference on what premium pellets that you can find.  Personally I was happy that I could bet Oxbow 15/23 and then stay with the same brand for an adult pellet Oxbow Basics T.
