What litter do you guys use? I had been using soft sorbent, but It was recommended to me that I use Care fresh. Is care fresh any better for rabbits? I had used it several years back with my guinea pigs and i found it didn’t hold up the urine as well.
What works for you guys? Do you have any interesting litterbox set-ups?
I use carefresh, and its great. My 2 buns love it too, Monkey loves softness on her tushy lol. She helps me fill the box, pushing it into the corners for me, then flopping in it to show her appreciation of a clean box
It’s decent at keeping odors down too. The times when we slack on cleaning the boxes, it takes days to notice the smell lol.
I use yesterdays news!!! Nothing else! I was mixing it with wood stove pellets for a while to cut down on cost but NOTHING beats using all yesterdays news!!! The absorbs urine smell like nothing else I have used. (If you buy the YN in the cat section instead of the rabbit section its ALOT cheaper!! just remember to get the unscented)
I use wood stove pellets. I used to use Yesterday’s News, which I loved, but wood stove pellets are cheaper and work just as well (except for a slightly woody scent I notice sometimes)
I’m a woodstove pellet girl. You just can’t beat $50 for a year’s worth of litter (for TWO bunnies).

how much do you use and how often do you clean it?
I use pelleted horse bedding, basically the same as woodstove pellets. $8 for a 40ish lb bag.
I use some generic paper pellet litter that works just fine, IMHO, but I clean it every day and dump it every other. ^.~

We have two cat-size litterboxes that get dumped 2-3 times a week. Each box gets a thin layer of newspaper and then about 2 cups of pellets on top.
So in all, we go thru 4-6 litterbox changes a week with 8-12 cups of litter being used.
Wood Stove/Horse Stall Pellets for me, $4 for a huge bag is a great deal and so far that’s the only thing I find keeps smell down. I used it for my Degus are well, and soemtimes some in my gerbil cage mixed with other beddings.
I’ve not tried yesterdays News, but a friend fo mine found staples and other ‘things’ in hers, I had read about that happening online, but didn’t really believe it untill she sent me a picture.
I love wood stove pellets!
They are a bit hard on the feet but if you put hay or a grid over the litter it will be fine. I use the grid you can buy at Binky Bunny and it works perfectly.
Wood stove pellets really do keep the smell down too, and I kind of like that woody smell.
Edit:
I used Yesterday’s news at one point and I actually find that wood stove pellets control oders better. I think its because i just didn’t really like the slight wet newspaper smell.
I use Aspen Supreme from Green Pet. It has a nice woody smell to it, does great with odor control. I only change our boxes once a week, so I like the fact that it does a good job with the urine smell. I have used CareFrsh in the past, and really did not like it, very messy and not good with odor. I have also used Woodstove pellets/Barn-Dri, and these work well, but the larger pellet size mean the buns have a little more trouble getting in and out of the box. If I use these, I generally put a thin layer of hay over the top (the dusty stuff at the bottom of the box that they will not eat anyway.)
I have read in quite a few articles that wood bedding causes respiratory problems and elevated liver enzymes in rabbits and other small animals. I haven’t personally used it. It is just what I read. I use Carefresh Naturals. I like it. It’s as cheap though. I just bought a big bag for $21.99 and it will last my two rabbits about 3-4 weeks. My rabbits are very picky about thier litter boxes. If it isn’t changed daily they will not use it until it is changed. I clean thier box out with diluted chlorine free bleach (you have to rinse very well) once a week. Since I change thier litter daily (I scoop out the soiled and pills and add a thin layer of the litter) it doesn’t get so dirty. I use the big cat litter boxes. One that has the removable high guard on it. I have to use that because Bella scoots her litter but all the way back and then pees right over her box lol. Baxter has to have an xlarge box as he is a bigger bunny. He is already outgrowing that one too!
Okay, I think it may have been pine shavings I read about. I don’t know if that has the same effect. I am going to ask my Vet because $50 for a years worth of litter sounds too good to be true!
Shavings should not be used because of the volatile oils in the wood. Inhaling these aromatics has been shown to be dangerous for some small animals, rabbits included. The pelleted litters we are referring to here have been ground up and extruded into pellets at high heat. This evaporates the oils, making the litter safe to use.
Well that sounds great. The price is very nice
Do they try to eat them at all?
Evansvillegirl….I live 14 miles from you! lol
I use Aspen Supreme pellets also, since the aspen wood is safer than the pine. No pine shavings, but untreated pellets are OK. I like to put a light layer of aspen shavings over the pellets just to give it a little softness.
But Sammy prefers pellets to soft litter, or I would be happy with Care fresh.

Mine don’t, but many people still put a thin layer of hay over the top, just in case.
I used to spend about $25 every 3-4 weeks. NEVER AGAIN!
I’d rather put that money towards what’s going IN the bunny, NOT what’s absorbing what is going OUT!!! ![]()
I use wood stove pellets- like others said…you can’t beat a 40lb bag for around 5 bucks. I have 4 bunnies and they are all in my bedroom at the moment. I throw away their entire litter box every day. I go through a lot and for me it’s the only option. Bee likes to dig in them also and it’s easy to pick up if she flings some out. Although since she was spayed she hasn’t dug at all in them….success!!
I used to use carefresh. It’s very nice and absorbs a lot. If you have one or 2 rabbits in their own room I think it’s perfect. But I can’t afford the 20$ bag for them every week. For me its just throwing away money…literally!! Lol get it ? Litter –ally…haaa! I would rather spend that money on fresh veggies!
Hi Guys, Just jumped into this thread. Where do you buy the wood pellets? I can only find wood pellets online by the TON. My kitchen isn’t big enough to store that.
Welcome Angela. Tractor Supply stores or places that have farm supplies may carry horse stall bedding, which is basically the same thing. Woodstove pellets can sometimes be found at home improvement stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot. They are seasonal, so winter is the prime time to get them.
I will say if you are in a more urban or suburban area, see if local stores can check the inventory at other locations. My local Lowe’s does not carry WSP, but the store that’s 15 minutes “into the country” carries them. It’s definitely worth a drive to go and pick them up.
I am going to switch to WSP soon but is it to late to find some at stores?
mocha, do you have any feed stores near you? They sell pelleted horse stall litter (around here the brand is Barn Dri) at feed stores, and you can use this the same way you use wood stove pellets.
ok…. any thing you have to watch out for with horse stall pellets?
Yesterday’s news ALL the way! It’s incredible! It’s SUPER absorbant and you can’t smell a thing, and it doesn’t crumble when you empty trays. :] Also, Ponyo loves it. <3
If you buy the Feline Pine (wsp) you can get it in the major pet stores and even in the Publix grocery stores.
The same company makes Equine Pine for horses, and that’s OK too.
I noticed a lot of you guys listed “woodstove pelles” as your litter of choice. Is there a specific brand of woodstove pellets you’d recommend? I tried a pine pellet from a feed store recently for Edmund and it turned to DUST as soon as he urinated on it… Is that normal?
Right now, I’m using Carefresh again, but I’d really like to find a good woodstove pellet because the Carefresh is so expensive and not that good at canceling out the ammonia odor (in my opinion)…
