Do you have a preference and if so why?  I know with me, I just picked up the first thing I saw, but I am beginning to realize their are different kinds – ones that "shed" less hay, ones that hang, some that sit on the ground.   Just curious what you prefer.

I use a cutlery drier from Ikea.  I got the idea from several of the foster families in The Haven who swear by them.  I have it zip tied to a NIC cube wall over a litter box.  They cost 2 dollars.  The Ikea name for them is BYGEL.  You can see what they look like here:

This thread reminds me of another great Ikea product for bunnies.  They make these 100% cotton throw rugs that work really well in the bottom of a Marchioro type cage or as floor coverings for lounging areas in condos and pens.  They are 3 dollars each, and measure about 3 feet by 2 feet.  The Ikea name for them is SIGNE:

Oh Osprey – of course you would have an ingenious non-conventional ideal cheap alternative item for a hay rack Thanks for those two ideas! I live next to an IKEA now so I think I’ll be heading over for some new decorations for the bunnies cages!

I’m not ingenious, MooBunnay, just observant and ask lots of "Oooh, where’d you get that?" type questions

We need to make an "Old Binky Bunny’s Almanac" with all of these little cheap ideas that we all use.  I can already think of stuff like build your own condo, make your own cleaning solution (vinegar for teh win), growing bunny greens, composting bunny wastes, there are all sorts of little ideas people have come up with.

That knife drier looks great! Too bad there are no IKEA’s where I am. : ( I am so very deprived as I LOVE shopping there! Oh well…Speaking of ideas, one hit me when I was perusing the clearance section at Bed, Bath & Beyond, there were plastic place mats and I thought, hey some have a little texture on them and then the idea hit me. Why not use them for flooring in a NIC condo? Some of them were like 50 cents a piece! Oh and hey I also noticed that BB & B had NIC-type storage cube panels that are a little more enclosed, they are plastic with round holes in them spread about. I think that someone may have already mentioned those, but it is the first time that I have actually seen them.
What I use now for hay is a Yaffa cube. It serves pretty well and really, I had never thought of switching except for one time when Bonsai would always pee in it! Oh he was driving me crazy with that. But he stopped, I can’t for the life of me to this day figure out why he was acting out, but just thank the stars that he is over that phase. My little pooky poo momma’s boy.

I have the plastic lixit ones ya get at petsmart that hang on the outside of the nic cage. Although like you mentioned, hay usually all falls out! I am always cleaning it up. Ikea is far from me too! Grrr lol. Before i made the extension to the cage, i did have the rack over the litterbox which worked great but now i cant do that lol.

I dont use a hay rack … Luey has his hay in his littertray.  Sometimes he will sit beside the tray and eat out of it and then he poops on the floor.  I have tried to used two littertrays one for hay and the other for doing his business in but he pooped/pee-ed in both.  Oh well, what was I to expect lol.

I can buy hayracks here but they have huge gaps in the hay would end up all over the floor (like most other ladies here have mentioned).  That cutlery drainer looks good though.

                        Dawn xx

I don’t use a hay rack… the piggie has one and it seems to just hold her back from eating as much as she should.

I have a woven willow hay rack (well it’s really the 3rd one!). They are really good as my bunnies love to eat the hay and then the hay rack…. it’s a race between me and them to see it they can destroy it before I get to fill it up again. I love the ikea cutlery drier looks good but I don’t have any where to tie it too (no cages now!) plus both my little darlings are chewing monsters so the willo one fits our purpose well! I do have a bunch of those ikea mats though… great for under the litter tray!

I am now the proud owner of THREE signe rugs from Ikea I can’t wait to remodel! Its going to be the theme of my weekend. Maybe I should tape the remodeling and send it to “Extreme Makeover: Rabbit Edition.”

I use two different ones myself. The big one is basically a molded piece of plastic that sort of ramps hay down into the cage. I’ve cut a few bars out to let Nel stick her big nose through and grab the hay more easily. That’s her main hay supply, but she also likes it in a little wire ball that hangs from the top of the cage by a chain, and has a bell on the bottom. It’s meant for holding leafy veggies and treats but it works great for hay too. She seems to like that one more as it lets her play with her food, as she pulls it out. However she can empty it in under a day so I keep the big one around for good measure. She really REALLY likes hay.

That’s a great idea Vinny! I just might try that for my two, they also are big piggies of hay and I’m always looking for a toy they might take to. They are really picky when it comes to toys.

We should really do the “almanac” kind of idea for all of our thrifty bunny ideas.

Hmmmm I think we’ve got a good idea going – Binky, how do you feel about “Binky Bunny Publishing Company” ? Jack could be the editor, though, as his secretary you’d have to make two copies of everything. One for him to pee on or chew depending on whether he liked it or not, and the other one as the clean copy for filing.

I am going to bb&b to see if they have a similar type of one. No ikea’s around here. Hubby says we can move bins into the house as soon as they are bonded I am also going to get those cubes and start building the mega house. The hard part was trying to find a place to put it. I got to make sure that it stays super clean though (daycare kids) and doesn’t stink. I never noticed the smell with coney but connor tends to sort of smell, I think his behind needs a good washing.

I got it at fred meyers. But they are really common in the bath and kitchen aisle. The large one is a corner shelf that suctions to the wall in your shower, and the small one is a suction cup holder that holds your sponges in the kitchen. They had covered in plastic kinds as well but I thought this was better if they tried to chew on it.
