        Hello!

I recently bought a bale of hay from a farmer, who told me it was grass hay. I don’t have much experience with hay, so I have trouble knowing the difference. The problem is, after taking some hay out of the bale, I’m not sure if it’s actually grass hay. Can anyone tell me what kind of hay this is?

        Thanks so much!

Looks like timothy with some clover mixed in. I’m going off the seed head in the first photo and the clover in the last photo.

There’s absolutely a seed head to the right in the first pic, you also see the “knuckles” (nodes) on a few of the stalks. Both those things are typical of grasses. There is a clover flower obviously, but if its just a little bit of clover mixed in, it’s not a problem.

Okay thanks! So this hay is good for an adult bun? Should I take out the clover when I see it or is it okay for buns to have? There’s about one or two clover flowers/stems per large handful of hay. Is that an okay amount?

I just googled and saw something saying that all parts of the Clover are bunny safe but it can cause gas. If it’s a very small amount it should be ok.

A little bit of clover is fine. My bun loves the flowers 🙂 A bit of a “treat”, like clover, mixed in with the hay can make a bun more interested in eating hay. So yes, this looks like good hay for an adult bun.

Looks like a mix of grasses plus clover to me.  Clover is high in calcium so you don’t want bun having too much especially on a regular basis.
