Hello all, my name is Corey, and I’ve got a new rabbit that I’ve had for about 3 weeks now.  I rescued him from outside where he was being hunted by the neighborhood cats.  I’m convinced that he was a pet that just got out or was thrown away, pets escaping or just being ditched are unfortunately very common around here.  I named him Sherlock, and he’s very well behaved.  He immediately knew about the water dropper, and he loves the pellet feed.  I also have timothy hay for him, but he doesn’t eat that as often, even though I constantly keep it in his cage which was a former dog cage for a german shepard, so it’s very large and I was able to make a second level for him.  When I let him out, he loves to run around my room and jump in the air seemingly randomly, and then go and sleep in several spots around the room.  He also loves to spend time licking me, and having me pet him.  He seems to lick me for as long or longer than I pet him, occasionally having me stop petting him so that he can lick me, before having me pet him again, lol.

The things that I’m most curious/worried about is that I don’t know what type of rabbit he is, and I’d like to take him to a vet to see if he’s healthy, he seems to be healthy, but I want to make sure.  However, vets that specialize in rabbits are very expensive, and as I’m a classic model of the struggling college student, I don’t really have the money to spend on taking him to a vet right now. If I could, I’d like to post some pictures of him and ask if any of you knew what type and or breed of rabbit he is, if any of you can help, i’d greatly appreciate it.  ^_^

Aw jeez, what a sweet little guy. He looks fairly healthy from the pictures; but as for breed I’m not too savvy on that but he looks quite familiar so I’m sure someone will know!

Looks like a rhinelander to me and I only know this because the next bunny I save (steal) is either going to be Frankie or maybe a rhinelander…

If he went immediately for the water bottle, then I would say he was most definitely a pet at some point. Also, I’m pretty sure that breed isn’t naturally occurring in the wilderness….

Oh, thank you for saving Sherlock (I love that name – Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite characters).

I don’t know what kind he is maybe a dwarf mix.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure what to name him, but when I first brought him home with me, he was exploring the room so intently that it was like he was investigating, so I thought of Sherlock, and then asked him if that was his name, and he nodded his head ^_^ And wow, I didn’t know there was a rabbit breed called a Rhinelander, I used to live in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, and the next town over was Rhinelander, lol.

I went and checked out some pictures of Rhinelander rabbits, and they do look strikingly similar. I’d say that they are much larger than he is though, so he might be mixed with a dwarf breed like Sarita suggested. Thank you guys for you help, I really appreciate it

Remember that most buns are mutts/mix breeds since people don’t know how to keep them from reproducing with everyone else. So it may look a lot like one but have a few features of another with it. Maryann is mostly Dutch but she has a longer nose than the usual breed.

I’d say that he has bonded to you quite nicely, grooming you as often as you groom (pet) him. And in case you couldn’t tell from the title of this board, those random leaps into the air are called “Binkies” and they are a sign of great happiness.

aw, what a cute bunny!  I am not familiar with the different rabbit breeds, so I can’t really comment on that.  But I do know cute, when I see cute!  He looks so friendly and that he is interested in getting pets and nose rubs.

Yes, He loves nose rubs, and i’ve been informed somewhere else, that he’s an Old English breed rabbit, which actually looks a lot more like him than the Rhinelander does. I thank all of you for your comments, compliments and help though ^_^

Great that you rescued the fella. At first glance I thought English Spot mix (that is an old English breed actually) but Sherlock appears smaller than that breed. That could be he’d crossed witha smaller breed or still quite young. He looks very sweet and sounds quite sociable. Amazing to think someone may have dumped him isn’t it! If your not ready to take him to a vet yet, maybe approach a local rabbit rescue. They maybe able to estimate age, give a bit of a check, give you any useful info for your area and even know of vets that do special deals. Worth asking.
                              Anyway, Welcome Corey, Welcome Sherlock!

My family knows of a vet that’s really cheap and very good, and they’re going to call them for me.  Oh, and thanks for the welcome ^_^

Whatever vet you take them too, make sure they have an “exotics” vet that is rabbit-savvy. Rabbits are actually considered exotics in the vet world because of their special care when it comes to anesthesia, their sensitivity to treatments that would normally work for cats and dogs.

Here’s is a great link on how to make sure to find a rabbit savvy vet – or to help you screen the one you may already have with great list of questions and the “correct answers” for your reference. http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html
