Early this morning I heard Petie finally get around his haybag and access the bars he’s so obsessed with chewing in the exposed corner of his pen, where he instantly started chewing.  After exasperatedly clapping my hands loudly several times, yelling Petie No! at the top of my voice, and yelling SHHHH! loudly, to no avail, I put on my slippers, trudged over and opened the door of his pen.  He instantly came over to supervise/and or disapprove what I had in mind.  I simply took the haybag which was filled with hay, bunched it and crammed it wedging it tightly into the small corner of his pen between his metal haybin (which has gone into lack of use, but is good as an anchor) and the front pen wall, while he…growled at me! A low guttural growl like Watch it, kiddo, I’m not kidding, don’t do that! Don’t cut off access of my bars! A growl – that’s what I get for protecting his teeth and mouth from multiple abrasions!  I’ve heard of bunnies ruining their mouths and teeth gnawing on cage or pen bars such that it’s caused severe damage to them, so I’ve insulated all around where he was fond of chewing with grass and seagrass and coconut fibers mats attached with binder clips. There’s still plenty of open access if he ever sets his heart on chewing THOSE places but so far, the places I’ve shielded from him were the only ones he wanted to chew. Now, there will hopefully be a little peace and quiet…until lord knows what else he becomes obsessed with!  On the plus side, now the haybag is nice and securely anchored for picking at.

What are YOUR bun(s) obsessed with chewing and what do you do about it?

The little chewer giving me a moment’s rest – at last.  From the angelic look on his face, who’d know what demonic contemplation goes on inside his little head?

Hahaha. Bunnies get so obsessive about their “projects”, don’t they?

My two will eat anything paper based, but Otto is especially fond of glossy color magazines (Wine Spectator is a fave). I used to store them on the ledge under the coffee table but he wouldn’t leave them alone! Once I took those away they decided to chew on books on the lowest bookshelf which they had never gotten into before. Now there are a few corners ripped out of the top of the books.

Hannah is obsessed with chewing on dry wall. We have a wall that comes halfway out to divide the dining room and living room and it has no molding so it’s just wall. Hannah put quite a few tooth marks in one side of it before I noticed. The lime-flavored no-chew stuff we have works really well and she never chewed it again so I thought the obsession was over. One night she jumped onto the recliner that was positioned a little too close to the wall and she took a mouthful of wall out! She was just waiting for her chance to get at a portion of the wall not covered in yucky tasting stuff. Now we have tooth marks about 2.5 feet up the wall. Haha

Newspaper, cardboard box. Wowza. Mine is picky even with her boxes! She claws at it and chews! She likes to chew the top of the window too… flexible mouth!

Peppy is crazy about destroying cardboard, but will always dig at/bite cloth. Actually, all my buns have really liked denim…it’s a problem sometimes when Peppy will bite at the jeans I’m wearing and not realize I’m underneath .  Either that or that’s her crafty bunny way of biting me, lol.

the flattened cardboard tube from a 2″wide roll of packing tape jams perfectly diagonally into the grid. they will never chew on the bars again.
it takes some wedging to get in there, but the bun cannot pull it in completely, so its gives them all the tugging fun of a tree root.
also fun for tossing and dunking in the waterbowl.

i go thru about 50 of these a month, so if anyone wants me to hold some aside. I also have an endless supply of plain clean cardboard liners.

Lolli eats paper and chews on cardboard. She has quite the remodeling going on of her box. It’s taking months and months to complete. But so far she has put in larger windows and stripped some of the walls. lol

Simon bunnylikes anything made of wood, like antique furniture. Or a particular quilt my mother made for me. Still trying to figure out how to fix that one.

Huckleberry wants to be a fashion designer when she grows up… so her favorite thing to chew is clothing! Worst of all, its not just our clothing. She wants to spread her “Needs More Holes!” fashion theory across the world. ANYONE that comes over leaves with a couple holes in the bottom of their pants. She sits next to their feet and seems to be innocently sniffing out the new person, but really, she is picking apart their wardrobe like she is on a designer reality show.
Clothing aside, she has a taste for the couch, the foosball table, the weight bench, my backpack, ANY CORD, curtains and drywall. Most of our furniture are bits picked up from garage sales and college students that are leaving town, so its all in pretty rough shape anyways. For my boyfriend’s birthday, I bought him our first piece of nicer furniture, a beautiful wood 56″ tv stand. Huckleberry hasn’t touched it, I really appreciate that she can respect the small bit of class in the apartment and leave it alone.

BTW, Isabelle, I feel your pain… I have three rooms that feel your pain… On the upside, I have found several carpet repair methods that seem pretty easy online!!!

Hef LOVES chewing on our walls. We’ve access to the walls in his room pretty well blocked off but he can still manage to sink his teeth into some portion of the wall! We’ve tried giving him a block of wood, pine cones, apple branches…he completely ignores them and goes on a bunny mission for a piece of wall to chew.

He also loves his cardboard boxes. Until they have sufficient entrances and windows added. Then he thinks they’re boring.

Oh yeah my new bun Cowboy loves chewing on the bars of his cage. It irritates me to no end. I spray him with water everytime he chews them, so he’s started to learn this scary mysterious water gets him. Maybe he will stop soon.

Smokey loves chewing on the bars of her cage, cardboard and especially CARPET. It makes me so sad. I don’t know why she does it. She has made bare patches in the carpet before.

we have ceramic tiles ALL around Busters room because she loves to chew the edges of the carpet. Its looks rediculous but whatever.
Every morning, she chews on her pen to be let out…and she love her big straw ball, and lots of cardboard, and her Bun Run and her cardboard house!! (From BB!)

I have since discovered that Lolli loves tearing up kleenex. She makes confetti, then has a party with it. LOL So I have kleenex all over but it’s something she actually does compared to her laying around all the time, so I let her and give her more. Ah, the things we do for our buns! hehe

Well Nilly loves carpet, baseboards and is obsessed with cardboard- especially her cardboard play houses!  She is determined to be a master contractor some day and I do believe she would redesign the whole house with out contstructive critisism! lol.  I spray perfume on the baseboards and she hasn’t touched them since. Oh, and on the carpet too (we have a small area in where she plays) I am not entirely sure yet about Hickory, we are still getting to know him but I did notice when we first got him he took some nibbles out from his blanket.

This is a good topic- we can all relate! BunBun and Nelli love chewing cardboard boxes – they have two cardboard houses that are currently under renovation. That’s the only chewing habit that I don’t mind. The rest of the stuff they chew is: Drywall, woodwork, wallpaper (he has peeled off our kitchen wallpaper 2′ up), books, magazines, dried flower arrangments, blankets and towels, rubber bracelets, antique furniture (he can tell the difference between cheap stuff and good stuff), cords (all are covered now), the skirt around our couch (he literally destroyed our last couch even pulling the stuffing out), carpet (which really scares me) and clothes! I’m sure I posted this before, but I had a pile of laundry laying by the cellar door (I know I’m a slob). The bunnies picked out both of my kids only pair of $40 jeans and bit holes all over them. The rest of the jeans were much cheaper- these two pairs were purchased at the mall for a special treat. How did they know?? All I can think of is that both pairs of jeans were black and maybe that attracted them. Oh yeah, they also got onto the kitchen table and chewed holes in a friends leather coat. This friend was someone I hadn’t seen in years and was kinda trying to make a good impression on. Oh well.
