What is the best position to give CC to your bunny?

Hazel has been so sick lately, and I haven’t had much time for anything else but him. It started with an Upper respiratory infection, but friday night last week he stopped eating and pooping.  I immediately noticed and gave him a fresh litter box and stayed up to watch him. He still had not eaten by saturday morning so I mixed some CC and gave him about 15 cc(ml) of CC every 4 hours. I called my vet and they said to continue the same treatment and if he declined in condition to call back asap. She also recommended  .1 ml of simithacone in case he had bloat from the antibiotics he was taking and to stop the antibiotics. I tried the football position and he did NOT like that. so I have been doing the bunny burrito and holding him in a upright position and cradling him after he was done to calm him. it still is very difficult to get him to take the CC, but it seems to be keeping him going. Hazel went back to his vet Monday morning and had no signs of intestinal blockage, and had gurgling sounds in his belly so the vet said that was a good sign. I was instructed to take him home and continue the CC to try to reduce the amount of stress he is experiencing instead of them making it worse. he is still very attentive and alert, but nothing couple of tiny poops so far. if he doesn’t improve by the morning I am suppose to bring him back in. any other suggestions would be Very Helpful!!!! please!!!!!    THANK YOU ALL!!

When my bunny had GI Stasis back in august of 2012. I would just put her on my bed and put her between my legs so my legs would hold her and just gave it to her in the side of her mouth. She didn’t like it very much and it was a little hard because sometimes she would move because she didn’t want to take it. I will send prayers to your bunny.

I think position depends on what your bunny likes. When Nate was super sick, I would hold him like a baby and do his feeding/meds like that. That was the least stressful way of getting it into him, but it isn’t a position I would necessarily recommend. The other way I would give him the CC, was me laying on the couch with him on my chest facing me. He would usually take it fairly willingly that way, but he’s a really cuddly bun,

Malp, be careful with the cradling like a baby, they can aspirate the CC into their lungs VERY easily.

WHen Moose was in stasis ages ago, I would sit on the floor, pull my knees towards my chest, and have him wedged between my legs and my chest, his head on my knees facing away from me. That worked well enough, and kept him secure.

I like the V between my legs too, with a burrito wrap also, and definitely coming in with the syringe from the side.
Some bunnies cooperate more if on a counter or table. The tend to freeze and hold still, so while wrapped in the burrito you can put them on the table, with one or two walls for security (in a corner) and you blocking the third side, then come at their mouth from the side. (Soothing talk may help, too.)

It just depends on what your bunny finds more stressful. Sometimes the burrito is stressing, and they will sit still on the floor between legs if you don’t bother to wrap. Kind of agreeing to cooperate if you just don’t do that to them. Some don’t like the heights and will be more cooperative on floor than counter.

And they all seem to put up a struggle when they are feeling better. Hopefully Hazel will have made a better poop for you by the time you read this.

Thank you for the advise, I had my wife sit in my recliner with the leg part up and put Hazel between her legs facing me. she wrapped him in a blankie, and I did the coming from the side like you said and and it went pretty good. He seems to be tolerating things, just a little stressed, But that is to be expected.

Hazel has been ok this morning, he ate a piece of banana and pooped a few tiny pearls. So we are continuing the CC treatment

I prefer to have them on the ground between my knees. I have them face a wall or the cage, so they’re less likely to go forward, and I close my feet behind me so they can’t back up, and use my knees to hold them in place. I put my left hand on the shoulders and use my right hand to wield the syringe. My one bun who has needed CC a few times absolutely hates to be picked up, so she’s much more calm if I can keep all four of her feet on the floor.

Hazel is doing well, he started eating hay and chewing on his wood block. and even gave some black pearls!!! now he was let out of his cage and is running around the house, I am so happy that he is starting to feel better. My vet said to continue feeding CC for another 48 hours twice a day to make sure he doesnt relapse, but I finally breathed a breath of fresh air!!

OK Hazel is on his way back to the vet, he has not changed and the vet wants to do more x-rays to make sure there isn’t a blockage. I just hope Hazel gets back to his normal self soon…

Ok the x-rays showed there was no blockage, however he does have a lot of gas between his stomach and colon. It showed he had food in his belly and digestive tract. so just patience time and more gas drops and CC…

Did he go onto a different antibiotic for the respiratory infection? Did the vet prescribe any pain meds during the stasis?

His blood tests came out good and he is no longer sneezing or having any runny nose so she said to just see how he does to try to reduce any more stress he might incur. if he starts sneezing again or the runny nose and eyes she will give us a different antibiotic. when I asked about metacam for pain she said that in some bunnies it can slow the digestion process. he doesn’t seem like he is in much pain as he has been playing with his blanket and ball. but I am also supose to massage his tummy before his feedings. which he is loveing the massage and goes to sleep lol.

Yeah, they really love the tummy massage when there is gas. It’s good when you see it is giving them some relief.

Have you ever had dental X-rays done for Hazel?

Not yet, he isn’t even a year old. and they vet said his teeth look great. I take all my bunnies in every 6 months for checkups sick our not!!! I was a medic for 10 years in the army and know what it means to be proactive.

LOL I have pet medical insurance, so my bunnies get the best of care. I definitely recommend getting some its only $11 a month where I get mine.

Hazel is doing great thank all of you for your advice!!!! He is pretty much over it. he is still eating in small amounts but he is getting stronger every day.
