        Hi,

I would really appreciate feedback on what is on my bunny’s ears. Has anyone seen this before? I thought it was dry skin that he was scratching but am now unsure and think I will take him to a vet. Again, would really appreciate feedback! Thanks so much!

Are we looking at bare patches on the ears and flakes? I’d say it’s probably mites.

Yes, the bare patches and dry spots of skin. Thank you!

If it’s mites, your vet can give you a dose of Revolution which should clear that up.

It could be a skin allergy. My now deceased female had some things that would make her ears get like that, certain foods made her scratch at her ears more. Is there anything weird in the diet or any new plants added to their diets? I suggest a damp clothe ran over the spots and to make sure more don’t appear, if it’s mites, you’ll want to check that out, but it could be dermal allergies.

It doesn’t hurt anything to treat with Revolution. If the “mites” don’t clear up, then you can look into other possibilities. As Scarlet suggested, allergies are possible. They aren’t incredibly common though. But if you find that the problem isn’t responding to mite treatments, then it would be one possible answer.

It does look a lot like when Bam had fur mites a long time ago, only he had them at the nape of his neck and that’s rather more common. Revolution is the best thing for fur mites. Do not under any circumstances use any compound that has fipronil in it. (Not that you’re planning to, but we always issue this warning when a bun is suspected to have mites. Fipronil is deadly toxic to bunnies.)

                      Thank you everyone!
I ended up taking him to a vet a few days ago, and began the first treatment of revolution selamectin topical solution (1 treatment every two weeks), so hopefully that will help. If it doesn’t clear up I will try and see if I can figure out if he’s allergic to something.
If I can’t figure out if he’s allergic to something, and it doesn’t clear up, would you recommend putting on a little natural coconut oil if it’s just extreme dry skin?
Thank you kindly for your responses everyone!

My bunny herself used to have dry skin which comes off looking like she has dry skin flakes all over her body. Upon our vets recommendation, we started using this oil called Dermoscent which worked wonders for our bun. After 2-3 weeks of dosage, the dry skin flakes were gone and she scratches herself much less often. You may want to check whether your bun can use that oil with your vet.

If it does appear to be an allergy you might wanna process of elimination figure out what it is to. Just in case. I haven’t heard of coconut oil as a treatment, but whatever they recommend for rabbit skin is what I’d suggest using if it doesn’t let up.
