What hay do you use?

What kind of hay do you feed your bunnies? For clarification – pet store hay is bagged hay that’s specifically made for small pets, farm hay is baled hay that’s usually meant for livestock, and home-grown hay is, obviously, hay that you grow on your own.

I feed timothy farm hay that I buy at the local HRS shelter. It’s only $4.33 for an amount that would cost $12 at Petsmart, and the bunnies eat it like it’s a treat. It’s soft, leafy, and very pleasant-smelling. After using it for a few months, Kaytee hay looks like Easter grass. The only bad part is that it occasionally has mashed insects or thorny weeds in it – definitely needs to be sorted through before it’s used.

So, what hay do you all feed your bunnies?

I feed a mixed hay that I help pack for rabbit advocates. Its various hays from local farms that we mix up ourselves to make for a tasty bunch for buns

I, primarily, give the buns American Pet Diner timothy. Lately I have been mixing it up and giving them Oxbow Orchard, Oat and Organic Meadow. My ‘kids’ aren’t picky, but seem to love Orchard the best.

Kelsey isn’t a big hay guy—but, in NYC, we are lucky. There is an organic rabbit feed store on the Lower East Side, recommended by the NYC shelters.

I have to constantly have different hays on a rotation. If Kelsey gets used to any one kind, he stops eating it. I want him eating hay so I do whatever it takes!!

I am grateful the shelter gave me the idea to use an empty toilet tissue roll, stuffed with hay on one side!! Kelsey loves to throw it, eat some, chase it, eat more, etc. And, yes—he eats from his litter box. He likes Care-fresh in the bottom of the litter box…and he definitely eats botanical hay, organic meadow hay, orchard grass…and anything I can find. Sometimes you need to keep a rotation.

I thought bunnies would automatically LOVE hay, but I work with my rabbit. He needs variety and getting the smallest size of a few? That means I can change it out, have fresh hay, and keep him interested.

Don’t be insulted if your bun doesn’t seem to like “the most popular poll result.” The shop I frequent will give me free samples….so why buy ten dollars worth of something Kelsey doesn’t love? Rabbits are so different in likes and dislikes–if you have a small business pet store in the area, they may provide samples (like I get for Kelsey). The upside is they *know* that if my rabbit likes the hay, I am a customer for life.

I’ve been meaning to check the local feed store to find some baled hay, but I guess I might have trouble storing it xD store bought timothy hay for my rabbits.

I feed oxbow – Powder likes orchard, he won’t eat timothy since I let him try orchard. Stickers likes what she likes when she likes it and it varies by Her Highness’ taste at the minute. This week it’s timothy.

Rosy gets store-bought hay.  She’s at the age where I’m trying to get her off alfalfa hay onto Timothy, but she doesn’t like it (who would?).  I have to internet-order my orchard grass because no store here carries it..  I wish I could find a local grower that would sell to me, but the ones I’ve found only sell wholesale.

I feed whatever is most convenient. They were on a large shelter hay bag when I first brought them home. Then I got oxbow timothy, orchard, and oat from a couple different stores that would donate from my purchase. Then I ordered APD from amazon because they are cheaper and I hate driving; this has been the freshest lasting but I’ll probably have to pick up some oxbow soon because I’m running out of hay and haven’t ordered any yet. If I get a chance, I’ll go see a farm store and hope they have cheaper hay.
Was hoping to see the larger amounts of hay available here on BB though.
