What flooring is safe for bunnies?

While I’m away, Chomondeley is in his X-pen with his cage and toys. He has a little bed and a grass mat, but other than that, there’s no flooring… are there any cheap options that are safe and won’t slide around? (I have put down a rug, and he has chewed it and slid it around, so I took it away.) Thanks!

I have a rubber mat which extends beyond the edges of their pen so they can’t chew it. When I’ve changed the shape of their pen, they have less slippery vinyl.

I’ve heard fleece is good, though it would move.

I haven’t really come up with a solution to their hard floor problem beyond giving them a very big litter box full of soft litter and filling it with hay to encourage them to sit in there.

You could use a thick tarp or a roll of vinyl, and scatter grass mats inside. I am still looking for fabric options that can’t be chewed, but it doesn’t look promising.

A fleece blanket pulled tight outside under the x-pen can work although you also need something to grip underneath it if you have hardwood/tile floors etc. Foam puzzle mats are great although some bunnies do love to chew them. Bandit chewed on his but never ate any so I let him keep them.

Okay, thanks you guys. I like the idea of a fleece blanket pulled tight under it… or a roll of vinyl. I’m just worried about him chewing foam puzzle mats, or I would use them.

You could always put the foam mats underneath a fleece pulled tight. That way you get the padding of the mats, it helps the fleece to stay in place and offers extra protection for your flooring. Depending on the size of the area you have, you may be able to get one of those foam yoga mats or something that comes in a roll so it’s one whole piece under the area rather than using the puzzle mats too.

Watch your bunny around synthetics. All our bunnies but one do fine with vinyl flooring and synthetic rugs. But our oldest female nibbles on rugs when out of her cage running around the house.

She came close to dying after eating on a polypropylene rug. We replaced the sags with sisal rugs and everything is fine.

Drwil, where do you purchase your sisal rugs from?  Are the sisal rugs large? I have tarped half the rabbit room and I cover the edges with a durable curtin-type sheet as a precaution, but I want more traction for them. My tapestry rugs worked well till I got my second rabbit, and she went to town on it, so I had to chuck them .  Never again.

Sometimes vinyl flooring will turn up at the edges, which is more attractive for chewing.  My rabbits ignore certain parts of the tarp but I always keep more attractive chewing options in the hotspots (like corners).

Thanks you guys for the helpful answers! I’m putting down more grass mats so that he doesn’t slip. Honestly, I think that Chomondeley would be fine with any flooring… he’s a pretty go-with-the-flow bunny!! I like the idea of sisal rugs, and tarp… I think I have a big tarp somewhere… just wondering, where can you purchase sisal rugs besides Amazon? Thanks!!

Hey! I know that this thread isn’t active anymore but I’ve put down a large baby blanket! He nipped it a few times but is not chewing through. He seems to like it!

I have titles under my two rabbits. They’re in a dog cage that’s 70 inch wide and I have a sheet under it with titles that are 18×18.
