What flooring is good for a rabbit condo?

Okay, so I’m building an NIC rabbit condo and I have no idea what flooring I should be using! I heard linoleum is good. Is that true? Thank you for your answers!

I used wood, and then bought stick-on vinyl tiles from Home Depot. Home Depot had large rolls of linoleum which the sales associate said were better (also they don’t have gaps, so water couldn’t seep through), but I didn’t need that much and it was more expensive, especially given you’d have to buy a roll. Maybe there are other places that sell it in smaller quantities.

If I could go back in time, I would have gotten a thicker wood (I think I used 3/8 of an inch, I would have gone 5/8) — bunny feet hopping every day on it takes its toll. I also have my NIC condo off the floor on wheels (which is a godsend), so I’ve seen the wood splinter a tiny bit in the middle. Will probably have to replace at some point!

My spouse built a bunny condo using the pictures and info on binkybunny as a guide. Since one of the two bunnies doesnot like slick surfaces, we opted for either wood or something soft. We used 3/8 inch thick wood and it got chewed up pretty quickly. One of the bunnies is a big time chewer. Each bunny had one level with something soft. I covered the wood surface with some filling and fleece. They pee’d on it. They also tried to dig into the fabric.

After a few months, the condo was very abused, but the bunnies really loved it.  If your bunnies are o.k. with vinyl, I think it would be a smart choice. If you go with wood, I think kbun is right about getting 5/8 thick wood….at least if your bunnies chew it might last longer.

We used plywood covered with textured sheet vinyl (went to a flooring store and found the vinyl remnant on clearance). Since it was a remnant, we were able to get a thicker more cushioned vinyl for a cheap price. We zip-tied hay mats to the ramps for added traction.

DH got commercial grade non slip sheet linoleum. He just got off cuts from the store, so it’s going to be a patchwork floor, but it’s super durable, easy to clean, not slick and free.

Base is a frame of 2 x 4 with joists every 13″ or so – even with the width of the cubes – running long way, then chunks running for joists running front to back. Then he screwed down a layer of exterior grade 5/8″ plywood, then glued down a second layer of the same plywood, flipped it and put short screws in from the bottom so they don’t pop through. Sam can stand on it at 230 pounds, so hopefully this can hold two should be 10-12 pound bunnies. Tonight he’s glueing down the linoleum, putting on trim around the plywood edge so they can’t chew on it as easily and attaching the hardware cloth to the bottom so they can’t get under and into everything. Casters on front and back, the four fronts and two back corners lock.

Okay, thank you! Did you have a second floor? How big was the hole for the ramp?

My bun doesn’t really like wood chews so I think I’ll be good haha. I’m going to opt in for the vinyl and maybe put on some fleece for some traction? Also what wood would be good for the base?

DH says plywood, 5/8″ thick and exterior grade if you are going to have seams in the vinyl in case water or pee seeps through. I suspect he over built ours, but that’s what I get from an engineering professor.

They’re awesome! Ceramic, non-skid, non-toxic, made in Spain, and they look so much better than the old ones. I’m going to post pictures when I get a chance. The underneath of the pen is poplar underlay – for permanent floors.

We bought a really cheap, big area rug from Menards to put over our living room carpet. It doesn’t keep the hay out of the living room but I think I’ve given up on that! We don’t have a ramp for our second level b/c she can jump up there just fine.
