We are going to an event called Rabbit Day with Ruffles.  He will be in a carrier for several hours.  What should I put in there for him?  A small litterbox?  food?  water?  Can he sit in a box without anything for a few hours?  They are having a rabbit adoption day and many rescues will be there with their buns.  I was told to bring Ruff to try to find him a girlfriend.  They are also going to have a lot of info on clicker training, bonding, building habitats, etc.  So there will be a lot of things for us to do and poor Ruffles will be in a carrier for that time.  And tips would be helpful.  Thanks.

I usually just put hay in my carriers for my rabbits when they go to the vets office. I use those cat beds made out of fake sheepskin for the bottom so they don’t scoot around and if they pee on it I can throw it in the wash – poop, I just toss outside in the yard.

I don’t recommend a water bottle though because it might just drip everywhere – most likely he won’t drink anyway but you might take a crock with some a bottle of water to put down in the carrier to see if he will drink.

I’m with Sarita, a little hay, crock and I put a few pellets they can root around for. I put down a towel, then a sheepskin. My name, address, phone numbers are written in sharpie on the top and side of the carrier along with a note in red to please give them water.

I will drop mine off at the vets on the way to work and pick them up afterwards and they always do fine. If it’s crowded that day and the buns need to stay in the carrier, the techs will cover half of it in a towel to give them a nice dark place to hide if they want.

I’ll ditto them and add wet veggies that they like and are likely to nibble on; Chances are if they are in the carrier for only a small amount of time, then they won’t eat but if they are in there longer they may-and wet veggies provide water.

You can also add a water bottle, which I like for travelling-since it can’t tip. If you don’t have a hard carrier with a grid door to put the water bottle on, you can bend a ‘cube’ and use that to fix your water bottle to.

Thanks for the responses. I’m a little less worried now about taking him. Hopefully we can find him somebunny cute.

I’ve had to keep bunnies in their carrier for a few hours, and during tornado watches here the bunnies have to stay in their carriers in the master bedroom closet overnight (its their tornado shelter, me and the hubby get the tub because there are too many carriers in the closet for us to fit in!) Your bunny will be OK, some food and a bit of water and something to absorb the pee so that it doesn’t get on his feet will be great for him. The only thing I would monitor for is temperature – will you be outside or indoors? If inside you will be fine, if outside, just make sure its not too cold or too hot for him.

Well he was fine. I put a beach towel in the bottom of his carrier with a handful of hay and a sprinkle of pellets. I blow money left and right, but I was cheap when it came to his carrier. When we got him, I bought one of those cardboard cat boxes that you would get if you adopt a cat from the shelter. I’ve only had to transport him once, this was the second time. He was fine and we put our name on a cute little lionhead tortie-ish girl. She got spayed on Monday and is doing well. We might go see her this weekend and then take her home either next week or the week after when the hormones die off.

SWEET!! Aww did you get pictures of her-or is there a shelter website that has her picture?

There are no pictures of her since the rescue just got her right before the rabbit adoption day. So for now, little lionhead is at the vet’s recovering. We will probably go and see her tomorrow since the rescue called me to tell me that she needs to go to the vet’s office to meet another couple who wants to meet one of her buns (I guess she is doing a bunny date). So she asked me if I wanted her to bring a black lopped girl to meet Ruffles. The black lop is cute and it would be interesting to see if Ruff takes to her. I’d also like for Ruffles and lionhead to meet at least once to make sure there isn’t instant hate between the two. I’m just not sure if tomorrow is too soon for Ruffles to meet Miss lionhead since she just got spayed on Monday. It’s very confusing I know, but whatever. All I know is that we are getting another bunny sometime soon.
