What do you guys use for liter?

Does anyone know if it is safe to use Equine Pine/Equine Fresh in bunny’s’ liter boxes?  

It’s what my mom uses for her Guinea Pigs and I’ve been using it with my 2 rabbits for a about month now.

I emailed the company asking if they knew whether or not it was ok to use their product with rabbits/guinea pigs and they said that it was ok because it’s been kiln-dried. I’ve read that pine is bad for rabbits but does the fact that it’s been kiln-dried change anything?

I’ve seen people here mention wood stove pellets but I don’t think those are available in my area and I am wondering if Equine Pine/Fresh is basically the same thing.

What do you guys use for liter?  Thanks!

I use Yesterdays News, but I think Equine Pine is okay to use.

Equine Pine is perfectly fine The kiln-drying process gets rid of the phenols that cause the problems with rabbits and guinea pigs.

I also use Yesterdays News, and it works great! Equine Pine is just fine though too!

I also use Yesterday’s News. I tried Equine Pine and a couple other horse bedding brands but my bunnies were snots and wouldn’t use them, I have heard that horse bedding/litter works great though and it smells good.

I use Yesterdays News too. Never tried anything else since I’m happy with YN. Wish it was a bit cheaper though since I have 3 litter boxes.

Yes, Equine Pine pellets is safe. Pine shavings of any brand are NOT safe, and you want to be sure that wood stove pellets do not contain an accelerant. But both Feline Pine and Equine Pine pellets are a good brand.

If you want to avoid pine altogether, switch to Aspen pellets. I use it and it absorbs odor better and longer than pine. Aspen Supreme, sold near the bird supplies in pet stores, is the readily available brand. Also, aspen shavings are safe if you want to switch from pellets.

People swear by Yesterdays News (as above) as another good pellet option.

I can’t remember the name of the brand, but my vet reccomendeda litter that is made of paper and is compressed into little pelletts, it works, but is kinda messy when they dig and spread it.

When I first got my bunnies I was using care fresh, but when that was too expensive I used aspen wood shavings. (Aspen is an okay wood for rabbits) but it wasn’t very absorbent so now I am using feline pine and its awesome!(:

ACtually its not exactly feline pine, its an off brand but the exact same thing as the pine pelleted bedding.

pelleted paper or wood litter is fine. But I would NOT use clumping kinds. The clumping can cause serious issues in bunny tummies.

I can attest to the wood pellets!!!! I was convinced that it would be expensive and smelly but I was so wrong! I bought a HUGE bag for only $5 at the Tractor Supply store. It smells so good, like a lumber yard (lol what else) and it doesn’t even smell bad when it’s dirty. It is super easy to clean up, I just use a scoop, like one you might use to scoop dog food, and scoop the old stuff, leave most of the poop, since it’s firm enough and doesn’t stink…. I LOVE that stuff! You should try it!

No it doesn’t clump like cat litter, and they don’t eat it but yes I am the same as huckleberry, the stuff i am using is great

Ok great! I love what I’m using (Equine Pine) and I just wanted to make sure it was safe for my bunnies. Happy to hear that it is since a huge bag only costs me $5.99 at Tractor Supply and lasts me over a month. I do what Huckleberry does and just use a scooper to scoop out the old/damp stuff and then add more fresh. My bunnies really seem to like it especially when I’ve just put fresh hay in!

You can use straw in the litter box, but it can be dusty and it’s not very absorbent.  You have to make sure that it’s clean and dry, since you certainly don’t want it to get moldy.  I doubt that it would have much odor control.

There are straw based pellets, such as Oxbow Eco-Straw.  I’ve used it before and I like it, but it is pricey.

I use wood stove pellets. Then when I forget to stock up and it’s july and I am a slow learner, I buy wood stove pellets for five times the price labelled as equine bedding lol
