I was thinking could I use this to house the 2 buns together?? I’m looking everywhere and cant find anything else suitable for 2 buns, I realize this is a run, but it looks quite large and I could use it as a home for them both.
I need to find something to house them together to help me out in the new year, as I am now expecting baby number 2 !! So one cage would be easier and better for me to clean than 2! Plus, the ones they are in are too small , especially for mouse, she has grown so much and is huge!! SO what do you think??
Seems like a good Idea! But wouldn’t it bee cheaper if you just made a cage out of NIC? The only problem I could see with that cage is that the bunnies might chew it because it is wood.
I like it. I could have sworn I replied about an hour ago. Maybe that was when the phone rang. Sorry.
Anyway, if they’re bonded (I know I wrote this before….hmmm…..) it looks fine. How big is it in feet, please?
Maybe you could just put both babies in a big playpen and let the bunnies have the run of the house instead. ![]()
You do know i mean I’m having a baby lol
I’ve looked everywhere for nic cubes and over here i cant seem to find them anywhere so a run type thing or a large dog cage seem the best options, that one is quite cheap, considering each indoor cage cost £50 each!! I’ll have to look up again the size of it, but it looks like i could fit it in our bedroom, life is about to get very hectic here!! 2 rabbits, 2 fish, a cat and 3yrold boy and a baby on the way!!!! Mad house!! But ppl keep saying id be better off giving the rabbits away…but i just couldnt, they are the best of friends and i cant imagine life without them now!! so housing together will make my life a little easier!!
Yes, I know the baby is still your constant companion lol!
That’s wonderful news, btw.
Don’t listen to those who say give away the bunnies. Nonsense. They are the ones that give away the husbands after seven years, so what do they know?
I like the idea of a dog xpen actually. That way you can set it up in the shape you need to, put a top or a sheet over the top to keep it secure when they shouldn’t get out. You could even lay down some tiles or linoleum under it for easy cleaning if it’s carpeted. I think that’s really your best bet, in case you rearrange some things later on to accommodate the living space for everyone. I hear those fish can really be demanding divas.
Congrats Sally! That’s wonderful news! That is a nice pen but I would also be concerned about them chewing on the wood. Are there metal dog xpens available in your area or ones you can order online? That will be more durable.
Thankyou for the congrats : )
That other one looks like it would be too large for our home, would it be a major problem if they chewed on the wood? I mean maybe it would be a good thing for their teeth lol ! ! Apart from that I thought maybe i could put some chicken wire on the wooden bits??
Actually the pen is not much larger than the cage you are looking at.
And it will also be much easier to clean than the one you are looking at. It is only larger by a half a foot – you can get a shorter one as well.
Would they not jump out of the top?? thats one thing that worries me they look so flimsy and mouse is a strong girl lol
Well, they are actually pretty sturdy. What you can do to deter her from jumping out is to put a sheet on top – use clothes pins to secure the sheet so it doesn’t fall down. This seems to deter those rabbits who like to jump out. My pens are about 3 1/2 feet tall so they are too tall for the rabbits to jump out.
I think the other cage is way too small too for 2 rabbits and in my opinion looks like a hassle to clean.
The Rabbit Haven has a series of great videos on You Tube about basic set ups of pens. I particularly like this one, and Part 2, because it shows everything you need to think of when setting it up.
But the nicest part about an xpen is that you don’t have to use it’s usual shape (as pictured in their ads) but can reshape it to a rectangle or square, or weird sided that will fit your room’s space. Many members have shoved it into a free corner and let it be longer but less wide, which works well with their furniture. Check out this vid. and the next part listed to the right to get some good ideas.
(I’m getting really tired of struggling with the big cage I have for Sammy and am tempted to go the xpen route soon.)
I think xpens actually have tops too that you can buy to attach. I’ll see if I can find that.
ETA: As far as the wood goes – my husband built a pen for us in our previous cozy-sized small San Francisco apartment and we used wood for the base. We prefered it because it just looked nicer since it was going to be a big piece in our house. But what we did is put metal gaurds on the areas they could chew. I’ll be uploading a photo of it in a second. They did not jump out of the top and it was rather low, but if you have a climber you may be able to fashion a top for it.
PHOTO UPDATE: Okay here is what we did with our wood based pen: I’ve drawn arrows to the metal strips the cover the edges. Even if it was okay for them to chew on it, the noise would be nutty at night. Mine are especially active at night – not so great for our downstairs neighbors at that place who were already being awoken by thumps and busy bunny activiity. We had to put in some sound proof bunny flooring – major padding which solved the problem. But even then I am not sure I would want it to be all chewed up, so the little strips kept the wood look with a little streamlined metal – which was okay for us.
Now of course, you don’t have to have it this big, it’s just to show you how the metal strips can be placed on wood if you want to go that route.

And this was Beka’s pen set up when her bunnies were still separate. I really like this kind of set-up as well – the ones with the doors are so much easier for cleaning and moving around.

I have seen some with tops, but you just have to keep them the shape they’re made for. (I think.)
Oh…Pam….I bet you’re right about that!

But ppl keep saying id be better off giving the rabbits away…
Psh. Better off how? Certainly not mentally! Bunnies for life!!! *grumble grumble*
People irritate me when they say things like that.. better fof without them indeed. Grrrr.
*goes off to pet M&M*
Hoep you find a good solution.. I like RP’s idea, pen the kids and let the bunnies run free! LOL!
Ooo, I forgot about Beka’s set up. That’s so simple it’s gorgeous! I may have to save up for those pretty xpens with doors.
My current cage has a door that’s too small to get the litter pan out, and too high to reach over. It was a gift to Spockie from my parents, but he used the platforms and she doesn’t, so it’s wasted air space. Sorry to get off topic.
*Looks around room with cage, mini maze, toys, nic cube protectors. Sighs and gets ready for work.*
Edit: I went into my saved sites and found a pop-up pen. Looks interesting. I’m going to start a fresh post in Habitats to ask if anyone has tried this and if it’s good for bunnies.
Sally, in the uk it appears the nic cubes come under the name Seville 4 cube Mesh & Grid System or Seville Classic 4 cube etc…
I also found this site last week though not sure if they sell to public. http://www.shopfittingsonline.co.uk/acatalog/Display_Shelving_and_Cubes.html
Try looking for pens on ebay or a reseller site. You can get some with tops, or make one out of cube grids or something else.
Having said all that, the Meadow Run you posted about does look pretty nifty!
Im loving the double set up in the pic, looks so neat and tidy!! I’m still browsing about for a good set up for both of them, coz they are so different in size aswell its hard coz mouse has blossomed and is huge, but dog is quite small! And dog doesnt tend to want to run about much only occasionallyand she doesnt fill the cage she is in when she flops whereas mouse does, which is why i’ve got to get this sorted new year. The run is still looking like best option for size and space that I have, as they will have to be moved into our bedroom anyway, see when we first got them both they had the spare room to themselves so dont think they going to like not having all that space but what can I do ! only so much space and a baby on the way! they will still have their evening run around the lounge but am sure they will be miffed at having thier room taken away!
I think if i get the run, see how it goes with the chewing if mouse goes mad at it or not, she’s the main chewer! gave her a big piece of card this morning and its been demolished already! So anyway yeh see how she is, if she starts i could use chicken wire or something smilar to line it with to stop her doing it, all your advice has been great!! Thankyou very much!! Had them 7months now and still not an expert so all advice gratefully recieved and I hope you all had a fab xmas and enjoy new year!!!
Are you two rabbits bonded now?
Yeh they have been for a while, I took the risk when I found out that dog was a girl for defo, and its been a fair few months and no humping or baby bunnies so they both must be female! They are very close now, when I open up their cages mouse just tends to jump into dogs and they sit there for ages together before jumping out for a run around!
I must say that I was so excited when I looked at that link and saw this really cute two story rabbit hutch! Then I realized that they dont ship to the US
Not going to lie, I think I may have cried a little inside! What I use is an Adjustable dog pen that is left open, its a barrier between their room and mine lol, and then I use their actual cages. One cage is the litter box in its entirety and then the other cage is a dig box filled with stuff to dig. The floor is just a piece of coroplast and towels and then I use a smaller xpen as the door because it can help funnel them to where I need them to be. Its really really easy to clean up and access and completely adjustable. Its not pretty but works perfect. If you find something suitable, let me know! I have also looked at the homes available through http://www.www.leithpetwerks.com and they are pretty neat, sturdy and suitable for multiple rabbits!
Oh and Large dog crates work really well too! My mom uses her Golden Retriever’s crate for the bunnies. Its HUGE!
