Um. I went to Petco? To get the litter for the ferrets and the bunny boys? And came home with this.
(S)he was in a cardboard box on a table that said “for adoption”. Her leg is broken. It’s an old break and healed sideways. She’s in my daughter’s bedroom in a wire dog crate and some toys I bought for her. She’s very skittish.
She needs to go to a vet but I can’t do it for a couple of weeks. Mortgage is due and credit cards are maxed. She’s scurrying around so I don’t think she’s in pain but I also don’t think she can hop up on things with her leg all sideways. (I haven’t checked her gender yet I’m just getting “girl” vibes.)
she is beautiful. She seems to be doing good from what you say there. HOpefully a vet can help her out.
Thanks. I hope she’s OK. She snarfed down some parsley and romaine. I had a bag of adult oxbow pellets from when I bought the wrong thing for the boys, plus a bag of timothy hay. I had extra litter pans from the ferrets so I got her a new water bottle, a hidey hole and some toys. She closed in my daughter’s room with a “fence” in front of the cage so she can walk around some. I’ve checked in her twice and both times she was out in the fenced area and high tailed it back to the hidey hole.
My Rupert is the extra same. The only difference is a bit of mobility issues-takes him a while to learn to get up things etc but no biggie; A bum bath every couple weeks as he dribbles a bit on himself…and at some point we’ll amputate for comfort (ie. if he gets arthritic). You want to watch the leg on the side that touches the ground-as it’s not meant to-to ensure no sores develop.
Congrats on the new addition!!
thank goodness you got her! she’s adorable. if she doesn’t seem to be in pain, i wouldn’t feel bad about waiting a couple weeks to see the vet. are you planning on keeping or rehoming her (or not quite sure yet?)
I’ll probably keep her. I feel like I made a commitment to her as soon as I took her off the table. Plus shes so skittish…if she settles in here it would be too traumatic to uproot her again.
Yes, I’m a sucker.
Ah, a new member of the I’m A Sucker Club! Welcome, she’s beautiful and it sounds like she’s adapted to her leg problem. I’ve seen yahoo groups for members with disabled rabbits and how to make things easier for them, but it sounds like you’re doing fine.
I too went into the pet store for supplies for my first bun and fell for a left over Easter bun. I held out 2 weeks, but if he had been injured like yours I would have taken him the first day too. congrats!
What an exciting trip! I would have taken the bun home too – she looks so sweet. When it comes to “handicapped” buns, I’m a total sucker as well. How sad that the poor thing was left in a cardboard box I agree with K&K that you should keep an eye on that foot just to make sure that there aren’t any areas where she is losing fur, or getting sores or redness.
Congrats on the new family member!
Thanks guys. I didn’t see any sores on her but I’m trying not to poke at her too much. I’m letting her get used to her new cage in the quiet bedroom. The good news is that she seems to be litter box trained. And she loves greens. I hope she’s happy here.
I think my daughter is going to be so suprised and happy to see a bunny in her room. My younger daughter has the bunny boys in her bedroom until they get bigger and we move them downstairs.
Do you know how old the break is? Did they tell you? Did they have any of their own vet records on hand regarding this break? The reason I ask is some breaks if caught early enough can be helped.
Uh…there were no vet records in the box…just an old drippy water bottle and a bunny. But, the girls who “took her in” said the owner thought it had been over a year.
Petco, it just keeps popping up. I’m assuming it’s a chain store in US? Like Pets Paradise here (although if thats paradise count me out!)
Awww poor girl!! She’s beautiful. If you can’t keep her……(hint, hint)
Yes, Petco is a chain store. And, in their defense, this was not a bunny for sale. They didn’t have any rabbits for sale. This is one that someone decided they didn’t want any more and they dropped it off at the store, sort of like you would at the shelter, except it won’t get put to sleep and there’s no adoption fee. You just take it if you want it.
Thank goodness for “suckers” like you (angels more accurately) to give bunnies like this a chance. Thank you for rescuing her!
Just keep in the back of your mind, that she may need to have the leg amputated at some point if it interferes with her and causes pain. Hopefully you’ll be able to get her to a vet and know for sure how bad the misalignment is.
OHHH! , over a year. Okay, well then. That’s different.
It will be important for her to see a rabbit-savvy vet when you go. Do you already have one you trust? OH, also, some vets can work on payment plans, you might talk to your vet to see if they would be willing to do that so you don’t have to wait.
The shelter here puts ‘unadoptable’ bunnies to sleep, which really saddens me because I know that they’re just misunderstood and should be given a chance. I think you did a wonderful thing and it shows what a big heart you have that you can take on the ‘extra burden’ of having a special bun. I agree with Osprey, angels like you
Thanks guys. I was referred to a good rabbit vet by the rescue I visited over the weekend. I’ll take her there but it’s still gonna take a couple of weeks because I’m digging myself out of a financial mess courtesy of a sucky roommate and I already sent out every extra dime I have to try to make a dent. I get paid again on the 8th and will try to get an appointment the following week. The other problem I have is that I’ll have to take a day off of work to get to the vet. It’s about an hour away. I’d like to see if I can take all three of them in but, depending on what the office visit cost is, I may have to hold off on Tank and Ranger. They seem to be in pretty good shape and the rescue lady said they look fabulous considering how young they are without a mom. And, they’ve doubled in size just since last weekend!
The boys have to have a check up before they can be neutered so I want to get that out of the way ASAP so I can get thier nuts chopped off as soon as they drop. (Sorry to any guys that might be reading.)
Oh I’m so glad you rescued her.

^^^snort.
it would be great if you could take all three since you have to take off work anyways and it’s a long drive… keep us posted of course.
and more pics of the boys would be nice, esp. if they’re growing so darn fast!
Ugh! The batteries in my camera are dead! I’ll have to get some and take pictures of the boys. I can’t wait to see what they look like full grown but I know I’m gonna miss them being tiny.
The new bunny seems to be doing well. All pottying happened in her litter box (yay!), she ate all of her pellets (yay again!), ate most of her hay (can I get a third yay?) and she’s now running around my daughter’s bedroom. She managed to get out of her fenced area. Not sure how yet but what I did was just block the places I didn’t want her to go with the nic and let her have the whole room. I sat with her for a few minutes and she came over to check me out but didn’t want pets yet. She did periscope up and down, I wasn’t sure if she could balance. She is very curious and I think that’s a great sign!
Some buns live long and happy lives with a ‘bunny kickstand’ and some develop issues. Nadia (the white one) at Save A Bunny doesn’t know she has a bum leg, surprising me as to how fast and how high she can jump and Tippy would do the best binkies out of everyone there – although he’s developed some issues but is getting better with acupuncture. If the break is healed and she’s havin’ no trouble getting around, they probably won’t do anything to it. You will need to keep an eye out for signs of arthritis as she gets older though. Ask the vet about it.
I’m happy to report that Thumper is doing quite well. As predicted, my oldest daughter is thrilled to have a bunny in her room and has spent a lot of time with Thumper since she got home on Friday. (The girls are leaving again on Thursday for a week so I hope Thumper doesn’t get depressed) Amie has spent a lot of time laying on the floor while Thumper is out and she said Thumper is very happy in her dog crate. She comes out for hours but when she’s tired she goes right back in and sleeps in her hidey hole.
Amie said Thumper did her first binky today. She called me at work to tell me about it…lol! Amie has a way with animals. We fostered a dog with really, really (did I say “really?”) bad hips. This dog was nice to everyone in the house but she followed Amie around like a shadow. It’s looking like Thumper will look to Amie for her affection. She’s already hopped on Amie’s back and sat there while Amie watches TV!
Do you guys think it would be good to try to bond her with the boys later or should we keep her away from them since they’re so much younger?
OH sweet. You daughter has a bunny in her room. Sounds like fun. Hmmm. Seems like the new one is doing good with his bum leg. Or her. And she is able to get into the litterbox and out thats great. She sounds normal.
I wonder tho she has been like that for a year. How can a person ignore that. Poor thing that must have really hurt.
Oh I think it’s worth a try to try her with the boys. I bet she would like the company and it would be good for her.
Since she’s yours and they are yours too you don’t have to rush the bonding and can take your time so yes, definitely give it a try.
Wow, I did miss this memo…Ignore my question on the other thread.
Congrats on your 3rd! You’re awfully nice to poor sad buns! (And now we both have a “Thumper!”)
You all move too fast for me to keep up with!
I bet that as time goes on she is really going to come out of her shell Its so fun to get to know bunnies that were very shy at first. Good job on rescuing her!
