I know a lot of people ask what breed their rabbit is on here lol. I’m just curious because I don’t think Pinky is a New Zealand rabbit. That’s what he was written down as at the rescue I got him from. I found this photo online of some rabbits that have the same markings as him (the group of rabbits photo). The one on the left with the tan colouring looks almost exactly like Pinky! Someone on BinkyBunny named LittlePuffyTail (I was looking at old forums a while ago) has/had a bunny named Sterling that looks just like Pinky but without the markings. Does anyone know what Pinky could be? And does anyone know what Muffin is? He was written down as a Flemish giant but I think he’s mixed with something or several other breeds. He has a rounder face. I believe he’s in between about 10 and 11lbs right now?

(Pinky put that stick on Muffins head not me lol)

New Zealands are a common breed. It wouldn’t surprise me if Pinky was a New Zealand mix. Broken pattern is also recognized in New Zealand rabbits. The amount of white varies with the broken gene, some individuals have little color and some have a lot of color. Sterling passed away. I’m not sure if LPT ever knew what he was. She does have what looks like a broken New Zealand though now. Hmm… Pinky’s main color almost looks red, although it seems more diluted. Perhaps that’s why the rescue thought New Zealand?

As for Muffin… he definitely looks like he has Flemmie in him. Or perhaps Chinchilla?

Thank you LBJ10! Oh ): Rest In Peace little bunny 💜 ):

That’s interesting, I didn’t know that. I just see the New Zealand white rabbits online which don’t look a lot like Pinky. I looked up the broken pattern rabbits and I do see the spots around the eyes, but I’m not sure! Yeah, the fur is like a red-brown. The rescue called it tan. I was thinking he’s a mix of something too but I saw that photo of the group of rabbits and was wondering if there was a name for them lol.

I was also thinking chinchilla for Muffin! Could he be a mix of a Flemish giant and chinchilla? Lol I really don’t know much about rabbit breeds.

If you blow on Muffin’s fur, do you see rings of alternating light and dark? That’s the hallmark of the chinchilla color. 🙂 I was thinking that’s what he looks like as well.  I think the chinchilla color can be on other breeds as well.

Pinky could be a NZ mix, or also could have Rhinelander in him. Sometimes I think the Rhinelander breed gets thrown around too much, since the broken color pattern can pop up in lots of breeds, but seeing him with the litter and all of them having nearly identical markings makes me think maybe he really does have something like that in him.

I’m not sure if I have mentioned this before, but Pinky’s markings may also be related to his poop issues. I didn’t want to bring it up right away, but seeing his siblings all with the same pattern makes me think I should (and knowing this is an ongoing problem even after ruling out some things with the vet). That patterning is linked to genes that are linked to megacolon/cowpile syndrome. I’m mentioning it because preventative management can help it keep it manageable and there are some dietary things that seem to help buns with this condition. It details it here: https://vgr1.com/megacolon/

Even in buns with these markings, the condition is rare, but given that Pinky’s been having weird poop issues for a while it might be worth thinking about.

That’s interesting, this is what his fur looks like! I’m not sure if this is what you mean lol.

As much as those really look like Pinky and his siblings, they’re not! (At least I don’t think they are). It’s a photo I found online when I was looking at bunny stuff lol. I just thought it would help identify what breed he is.

I think I remember rhinelander being brought up before, the markings are a bit similar! Thank you for the link, I’ll look into it. He’s currently on day 4 out of 7 of his hay-only diet. He’s left two piles of his weird poops on the floor today. :/ I haven’t checked the litter box yet today. I can bring megacolon up to the vet as well, since it seems like he will have to go back in for testing. But maybe the poops improve within the next few days of his hay-only diet. :/

                Thank you for the info!

Technically chinchilla rabbits have this really clear banding pattern with 4 bands (notice the second black band before the white ticking), I don’t think Muffin quite has it:

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think his color is more of a grey agouti, which still has bands of color but not as many? I think chinchilla is a subset of agouti? So all chinchillas are agouti but not all agouti are chinchilla? 😛

From what I understand, there are variations of the chinchilla color. These variations are influenced by other genes like the “wide band” gene, which makes the silver/white band in the chinchilla color about twice as wide. I assume this would not be “ideal” for rabbits of the Chinchilla breed, but can certainly occur in rabbits carrying the gene for the chinchilla color.

Thanks guys! That’s interesting, I didn’t know about any of that. What does the agouti colour mean for his breed? (if that’s what it is).

I think he looks like the American Chinchilla but I don’t think he’s big enough to be a giant chinchilla? Could he be a mix of a Flemish giant and chinchilla? Or is a chinchilla rabbit just the name of a colouring? Lol I really don’t know! I’m not sure if his fur pattern matches any.

He’s a beautiful, sweet and gentle bun no matter what breed! ☺️💜
