We had a thread going about bunnies and the snow…what about bunnies and sand? Is the dust bad for them like litter sand would be or is it okay to let them play in it?I think both my buns would love it…they aren’t big diggers in the house but both of them seem to love it when they go outside! I was thinking of making them a sand box since I’m going to be living by the beach now!

I don’t think sand has a lot of dust and should be fine-like so long as they aren’t hovering down and eating a bunch I’m sure it’s totally fine to play in. And I bet they’d love digging in it.

I’m actually coniving some way of making a real diggy box in their room with dirt in it-without Dave noticing me making it (he’s a neat freak lol).

But yeah I’m totally sure a sand box and sand in generally-A OK

I am actually not sure about the dangers of sand itself – the texture and what not, and I couldn’t find anything with a quick google search so maybe one of the other leaders will have more info about this.  But one thing to be careful of is if you do bring sand in from a public beach – What is in the sand?   Bacteria, virus and parasite wise from other animals, wild or just people with their dogs, glass, trash bits etc.  However, if someone chose to get sand or soil from a Nursery, I don’t know what process it goes through either.  (I think some soils have fertilizer built in). I’ll have to check more into this.

EDITED  Op…KK, I just posted and yours wasn’t there before -(I think I was doing a google search too before I finished my post) Anyway looks like I just overlapped. Thanks for posting because I really don’t know much about this.

I wonder if the natural sand they sell for some fish tanks would be good? I mean, it cant poison the fish right? Might have to look into that…

Where do people get sand for children’s playbox? My brother got “Play Sand” for his kids. (I’ve also just read that it can be called “Sandbox sand”).    I’ll have to ask where he bought it.   But anyway, the sand has been sterilized and all of the large particles have been taken out. Maybe that would be another option.

i dont know anything about bunnies and sand but i do know that fish tank sand has to be rinsed really good to get the dust out. also the play sand is very dusty. maybe if you could rinse it really good first it might be ok?? we do this for fish by putting the sand in buckets and mixing it with water and dumping the floating particles and repeating until there are no more floaties (dust). a sandbox does sound like fun!

I guess the one concern you might have with sand is that is is very fine and could irritate their eyes. There also could be possible impaction if they ingest it. I remember speaking to one of my vets about this and he did not think it was a good idea for those reasons – I would have thought it was fine myself.

Most rabbits will just pee and poo in it as a natural sequence to digging. So it will quickly turn gross.

BT, that was my first thought – bugs. I would be concerned about little bugs in the sand. I think there’s a higher risk of something harmful if you just plunk them down on the beach than if you make a sandbox for them with the sand that’s good for kids. One good sifter can remove debree at least.
                          Good question.

(K&K – get Hyponex Potting Soil and Digging Dirt, for the fastidious indoor bunny)

I have bought Play Sand before at Home Depot. Like $2 for a 50lb bag! We bought it for our Hedgehog who really did not like the sand. I tried the sand once with Carrera when she was little but she hated it too. lol
