wet tail?

I don’t know much about this rabbit diarhea stuff, so excuse me for sounding so clueless

Pudgy, poor boy. I was cleaning the pens and then I saw it: the clump!

My immiediate thought was, uh oh better check Pudge for messy bottom. Well, he has had a messy bottom before, but it was mild, the poop was matted with some fur and the vet cut the matt out for us and he was all better. But this time it was still wet! It was actually quite a mess and there was yet another clump on him. He wriggled and wriggled and wouldn’t let me hold him long enough without a fuss. I picked him up again after he had to have his lil spazz and it was gone! yay! oh joy it’s gone! I don’t care where it is, but it’s off him little did I know it was rather close to me, and when I was holding Pudge I saw that my foot was leaning back in the clump. How gross. Anyways I tried to clean his bottom but hardly any luck, there was nothing else except some wet reminance of the clumps (to much info?) later I took away his veggies and left only a few pellets in his dish. I gave him a big handful of hay, as while skimming through some threads I saw that someone had the same problem and left the bun only with hay and it worked. Well I checked his bottom again last night and it was still wet reminance and digging around in his pen, I found another clump. Oh joy. So again, no veggies (for both the bunnies) little pellets, and tons of hay. I’ve been checking on him each morning before school, just checking if he is looking good and if there are no alarming signsof illness. Anyways I’m really worried about him, would should I do? He hasn’t had any diet changes except I changed his hay to prairie timothy (same with Leila). I’ve been trying to find a good veggie to give alot of and looking around the net and BB a little bit I chose dandelion. So I give them both around 2 cups of dandelion and about 2-3 mint leaves.

Do the clumps look like left-over cecals? (liked mushed together soft poos – like a cluster of grapes). Do you think your bunny maybe getting overweight? Sometimes that can prevent them from getting their own cecals. You said there has been no diet change? What is their diet (before you changed it) And what kind of pellets are they getting?

Any more info or an update on the condition of your rabbit? This can be a serious situation that needs to be tended to immediately.

Binky bunny- no, they weren’t cecals, there wasn’t clusters, but clumps, it looked like all one poop (but pretty soft and VERY smelly).

I feed them

– a bit over 1/4cup of pellets (Nutriphase, is that a good brand? I use Nutriphase because a)When I first bought Pudge the Pet store employee told us to buy that brand for him and b)the petsmart I go to NEVER has a steady stock of rabbit food except nutriphase, and besides, the few brands that are available there look a bit “junky”.)

– around 2 cups of dandelion

-2-4 small mint leaves

– 1-2 raisins as treats

Scarlet Rose- I think he might be better, it might have been the veggies, I’m not sure. When I checked on him there was a tiny bit more on his bottom but it was dry and a bit matted with fur, but I got someone to assist me and we cleaned it all off.* I just checked on him again, his bottom was still clean and their were no clumps in his pen. It must have been too much dandelion, what is the recommended dose of dandelion?

I just checked out the nutritional analysis and in my opinion, I would search for a pellet that has more fiber, less fat, less protein.    It is alfalfa based as well as has cornmeal in it, so I wouldn’t use this for my rabbits.   Timothy based pellet is better (unless you have a baby or young rabbit)

I follow the HRS nutritional guidelines:

• Fiber 18% minimum (20 -25% best)
• Fat 1 – 2% max,
• Protein 12 – 14% max (long-haired breeds,angoras, need higher)
• Calcium 1% max

I know you are in Canada and there are a many Canadian members here that may be able to advise where to get a healthier pellet.
